Meredith's 'Brokeback' Farewell

Joy Behar and Meredith VieiraFriday's episode of 'The View' was the last hoorah for co-host Meredith Vieira -- she's set to fill Katie Couric's seat on 'Today.' Joy, Barbara, Star and Elisabeth roasted their co-host for their send-off, but Joy gave her something to really remember -- a kiss!

Behar went in for the liplock during her turn at the dais. "I love you so much, you know that," she told Vieira. "I just don't know how to express it. So I thought to myself, 'What would Rosie O'Donnell do?'"

That's when Behar made her move.

Afterwards, Vieira talked backstage about her favorite moments from her last day on 'The View.'

Vieria joins 'Today' in September.

46. I was disappointed at the farewell given to Meredith. I expected "class" from Barbara Walters--what we got was far less. Personally, I couldn't believe the jokes and/or the guests. Her children and her husband deserved more respect.
As for my future watching of The View--time will tell. The dynamics of the group should be interesting, unless another one or two find new jobs.
Best to Meredith--I certainly will give the Today Show a look, but I'm a Good Morning America fan.
Barbara, time to re-think what vision you have for The View.

47. Wow...the views sendoff was very much in poor taste. Couldnt they afford to get ANYONE else besides the always crude Mario cantone or um...who in the world understood what gilbert godfrey was talking about?? He made absolutely no sense to me at all. Joan Rivers was funny as usual and no one has been mentioning Kelsey grammer who was fairly funny but once again..had NOTHING to do with meredith! I bet there are 100's of celebrity's that would of loved to of came on the view today to give meredith a proper yet funny send off. I was absolutely sickened by the fact that mario cantone had the nerve to make sexual jokes in front of merediths kids! Just because he has no class doesen't mean he shouldn't respect her as a mom. The kids looked extremely uncomfortable as did meredith.

48. Well I was beginning to wonder if I was the only prude watching the View today. Glad to realize there are still some decent normal people out there in TV land. I agree with the comments made today. I was honestly shocked, even though I have listened to their often very off color comments over the last two years of viewing, The View! Today's display was really quite outrageous and in very poor taste. I am truly surprised that Barbara has sunk so low to allow such a program. I agree that nice people like Elizabeth and Starr need to walk out. They are too nice for this garbage. As for Rosie, I could care less if she is a Lesbian but the choice is very bad. It just will not work and whoever had the idea of thinking she could replace Meredith, were really not wise. I do not plan to watch this show again...Goodbye Meredith. I am glad you are moving on to a cleaner show, but I feel that you have also helped to make it the garbage it is. I personally have watched it for Starr and Elizabeth, and not you or Barbara for a long time. Joy is ok though...

49. Merideth is a talented entertainer, and is worth watching, whatever show she is on. However, she comes across (with various comments) as being neutral when it comes to her personal relationship with her spouse. As for the general demeanor of the show, it seems that one of its main purposes is to promote women and demean men. Most of her co-hosts (or hostesses if you were properly raised) appear to be self-centered egotists and man-bashers. I have watched the show 2 or 3 times, but will watch only once to see what kind of a fool Rosie McDonald will make of herself. She can't touch Merideth when it comes to class.

50. I for one will have NO reason to watch the view. I have watched for almost 7 years now and there is no way I will watch the love-hate relationship between rosie and the rest of them. Rosie was the WORST pick ever for the show. I can pretty much imagine the show being cancelled unfortunately. Star is already annoying enough with her *i'm better than thou* attitude now that she lost the weight..no one can tell her that shes NOT Tyra banks!! Wake up!!!!
As for the view..Meredith..you CARRIED that show! I will now start watching the today show in the mornings because you have always made me SMILE!

51. The show was fantastic. Loved it!!! Loved it!!!! It was about as comical as it is when Viera does her very corny but cute comedy toutines. I think it was a fitting sendoff...Goodby my Dear. WE WISH YOU WELL!!! uNLIKE OTHER POSTS, WEL WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH THE VIEW. MEREDITH, AS MUCH AS WE LOVE HER, WAS NOT THE REASON WE WATCH THE PROGRAM......DIFFERENT WOMEN...DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW-THAT IS WHY WE WATCHED AND MEREDITH, AS MUCH AS WE LOVE HER IS ONLY ONE WOMAN WITH ONE POINT OF VIEW. WE HOPE AND PREDICT THAT THE VIEW WILL CONTINUE TO BE A SUCCESS JUST AS TODAY WILL CONTINUE ON....THESE SHOWS DO NOT DEPEND UPON ANY ONE PERSONALITY FOR IT'S SUCCESS.... MUCH LUCK...MUCH LOVE...MUCH PEACE AND JOY--------TAKE A LITTLE TIME TO ENJOY THE VIEW.

52. Meredith was the only reason I watched the show. I realized that today after seeing what the others would do to her memory and the way they 'honored' her going. Was that the way to properly send her off with style? What a joke! She has brought a lot of life to 'The View', and I think they could have found a more classy and respectful way to remember her and say goodbye. I know I will miss her very much and 'The View' can say goodbye to me as well. And who's idea was it to replace a class act like Meredith with a loud mouth, crude, crass, lame brain like Rosie? What in the world are you guys thinking? Rosie has to be the most annoying person on Earth, no exceptions! As well as not being funny at all! And who do you think is going to talk the whole hour? Rosie butts in and doesn't let anyone else get a word in edgewise when she just visits the show. Can you imagine what it will be like with her there every day? I won't be there to find out! Good luck 'View". I give you a year before you close up shop for good.

53. I thought the sendoff could have been more nicely done. The best part was having Meredith's family there in the audience. The rest was a lot of garbage. I don't know why people keep picking on Barbara Walters. I think it is nice to have a more mature woman represented on a talk show along with the younger women. They are lucky to have her as well. She gives some a reason to watch the show along with Meredith.

54. Everyone so far (except for one) feels as I do. The final show with Meredith as co-host was in poor tast with her family there and not at all funny. Certainly with 9 years of 1-hour shows they could have put together 2 or 3 montages that would have paid a better tribute to such a class act. What did Kelsy Gramer., Joan Rivers, or Mario Canton have to do with Meredith's time on the show? I suspect this show was Joy's idea - it didn't work. The Today Show will thrive with Meredith. They seem to know how to showcase a person the public likes to watch.

55. I was very disappointed w/ today's send off of Meredith Viera. She is such a class act & the anchor of THE VIEW. What ever possessed Barbara & the Viewmaster to come up w/ such a crass roast, w/ a poor substitute of a real "ROAST" w/ o top stars roasting her?? Why not get some top notch stars to help roast her? That would have at least been better. I agree w/ those that said her kids & husband should have been very embarrassed by what was said. They themselves were very classy in what was said. Ben is a gentleman & so is Richard. It's a shame it ended this way. I have watched THE VIEW from the beginning & loved it, but not sure I will continue. I'll try watching Rosie & see what happens, but she is so opinionated, I feel she will try to take over. What on earth didn't they choose Joy or Star to be the moderator, instead of looking someplace else??? I loved Rosie's show, but that was hers & this is NOT HERS, so I guess we will just have to wait & see. I personally do not like NBC's shows, & NEVER liked Katey Couric, so I
will ll seek out Meredith to see if she bonds w/ Matt & the rest of that team. Why do they have to keep moving around? I guess it is all greed & money talking & there is no loyalty anymore. TSK TSK TSK ABC, You really blew it this time!!

56. Hey comment # 25, I think you should rethink "intent and purpose". If the intent of that fiasco this am was to demean... it hit the mark. If the purpose was to make a fools of Meridiths family.....it scored 100%. So after rethinking "intent and purpose" I feel the comments of #1 were "right on". I feel you should take a closer look at what happened during that "roast" and realize performances like that belong on HBO not ABC.
PS Ms. Walters should take a close look at that show and rethink her choice of comments made to someone that has kept her show AFLOAT for 9 years.

58. I am so disappointed in the send off show for Meredith and the rude, non-funny jokes were totally uncalled for. She was the life of The View and it was totally inappropriate to have her husband and children there to have to put up with and smile the whole time. Meredith looked as beautiful as she always does but must t have been mortified inside at what was happening - especially that kiss and the lesbian jokes. The show will never last with the remaining ladies. I do not find Rosie funny in the least and her type of humor and pushy demeanor will ruin the show. I know I do not intend to continue watching. Barbara you should have had more class.

59. The show was TERRIBLE! What were they thinking when they were planning this send-off? I thought Meredith's speech was in poor taste. The whole thing was very disappointing.

60. Is Joy going to welcome Rosie the same way she said "goodbye" to Meredith? What ever happened to comedy with some talent behind it? Sure won't be watching TheView now.
