Celebrity Feuds
When Elfmans Explode

Jenna ElfmanIf Tom Cruise's recent public displays weren't evidence enough, Scientologists Jenna and Bodhi Elfman prove that they, too, are willing to go to great lengths to defend their religion.

Indie film director John Roecker tells TMZ he was walking to his car with a female friend in LA's trendy Los Feliz neighborhood last Sunday when he was approached by a shirtless man and a tall blonde. "Hey, man, you're making fun of my religion," said the stranger angrily.

Roecker quickly recognized the couple as actor Bodhi Elfman and his wife, 'Dharma and Greg' star Jenna Elfman. Mr. Elfman's ire was apparently drawn by Roecker's self-made t-shirt, which had a picture of Tom Cruise on the front under the caption "Scientology is Gay!" and a 'Stayin'-Alive'-era John Travolta on the back with the words "Very Gay!" For the record, both Cruise and Travolta have said repeatedly they are not gay.

Roecker and his controversial t-shirt

According to Roecker, whose encounter was first reported on LA's KROQ-FM's Kevin and Bean Show, the invective started to fly after he made several references to Scientology theology and its reported central tenent, the story of Xenu.

Roecker says Jenna repeatedly said "What crimes have you committed?" and began screaming at Roecker, "Have you raped a baby?" as motorists on Los Feliz Boulevard drove by in snarled traffic.

Roecker says it appears that Bodhi Elfman prepared to take a swing at him, but thought against it.

Bizarrely, Roecker also says that the Elfmans had a young, twenty-something male companion with them whom they continually instructed to move away and cover his ears whenever references to Xenu were made.

Roecker says this is not the first time he has worn a t-shirt that has provoked similar reactions from fellow devotees of L. Ron Hubbard like Juliette Lewis, Lisa Marie Presley, and actor Hal Ozman, who worked on 'Dawson's Creek' with none other than a certain Katie Holmes. Sources at the Church of Scientology's Celebrity Centre say Roecker is no stranger to them. Several non-celeb parishioners have also complained about Roecker's t-shirts.

Bodhi Elfman's rep Jenni Weinman tells TMZ that according to Bodhi "He was out for a Sunday stroll with his wife, when some guy walks by with a t-shirt on, very prominently attacking his religion. Words were extended and Bodhi and Jenna were personally attacked for their beliefs. As they went about their business, the guy continued to try to illicit negative responses from the both of them. As they walked away he continued to scream propaganda and hate at them. Apparently he spent all Monday calling the press to promote himself."

557. Hey, Ky? Why don't you just shut the fu** up, alright? You shouldn't make fun of any religon whatsoever. The Church of Christ is the one I go to, and are you there for 20 years of your life? HUH? NO. I think you should think about what you say before you say it, dumbas*.

558. Um, I really couldn't care less whether we can class Scientology as a religion or not. Honestly, I don't understand enough about their principles to pass judgement. What I do understand is the hypocricy of the whole situation. This guy apparently "offended" these two people because his t-shirt says that their religion is gay. What is NON-offensive about asking someone if they have "raped a baby"? That is not only offensive, it's down-right disgusting, off-base and vulgar. It is not even equitable to what the t-shirt was suggesting. I don't know about anyone else, but if someone shouted something like that at me in a public place, it would be a very quick lawsuit called "defamation of character".

Quick note to the Elfman's: "gay" also means "happy". Perhaps Xenu doesn't allow that, either.

560. It look like to me that Roecker was trying to start something for his own benefit, probably walking up & down that street for hours looking for a famous unsuspecting to come by. I don't know but I can't see jenna reacting like that, maybe I'm a little naive or starstruck.

565. I used to be more active in Scientology, but frankly i get embarrassed by some of the Scientology behaviour. I wish they would learn to stop reacting to jerks like this, it's exactly what they want. They should just ignore them. They are sooo stupid.
However, "Free speech" doesn't mean you get to do whatever you want and everybody has to like it. Nobody should be censored for what they say or do, but that means that people who don't like it have every right to say anything in response too. That guy wanted to piss people off and he did. No victims in this. That being said. John Travolta looks totally gay in that picture! I think he looks goofy period, but that's just my opinion.

567. Scientology is a whack cult based on an alien named Xenu. How can they prove this? They can't. And they say psychiatry has no scientific proof. This is a load of clams!

569. The First Amendment says *Congress* shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, nor abridging freedom of speech. The First Amendment does not apply in interpersonal situations, as there is no law involved. Furthermore, if an asshole wearing a Tshirt has the right to freedom of speech--and he does--Jenna and her husband have that right also. They can yell at Mr. Tshirt all they like.

I'm sick of seeing people defend freedom of speech when it's a bully and then denying it to those who respond to bullies.

Mr. Lawyer is right: Scientology isn't any more deserving of mockery than any other faith, and even atheists do mockable things in the name of their lack of belief from time to time. I really don't care what churches do. That doesn't make it right--remember what your mama said about two wrongs?

And it doesn't even matter if Scientology is a cult, or if its followers have to pay for anything, or if they staunchly defend their faith (hello? The Inquisition?). They still have the right to freedom of religion in this country, and they have the right to speak out when they feel attacked. And if you don't like it there are plenty of countries where they don't tolerate more than one or two faiths. I doubt they'd accept you there, but you can always try.

570. Indie film director John Roecker should make a shirt of his own that says:

John Roecker is gay, REALLY GAY!

John Roecker, go to Regent Entertainment and talk to Here! which is their gay division. You could produce some films for them.

The fact that you make fun of gays must mean you are a CLOSET GAY. Jerk!
