When Elfmans Explode

Jenna ElfmanIf Tom Cruise's recent public displays weren't evidence enough, Scientologists Jenna and Bodhi Elfman prove that they, too, are willing to go to great lengths to defend their religion.

Indie film director John Roecker tells TMZ he was walking to his car with a female friend in LA's trendy Los Feliz neighborhood last Sunday when he was approached by a shirtless man and a tall blonde. "Hey, man, you're making fun of my religion," said the stranger angrily.

Roecker quickly recognized the couple as actor Bodhi Elfman and his wife, 'Dharma and Greg' star Jenna Elfman. Mr. Elfman's ire was apparently drawn by Roecker's self-made t-shirt, which had a picture of Tom Cruise on the front under the caption "Scientology is Gay!" and a 'Stayin'-Alive'-era John Travolta on the back with the words "Very Gay!" For the record, both Cruise and Travolta have said repeatedly they are not gay.

Roecker and his controversial t-shirt

According to Roecker, whose encounter was first reported on LA's KROQ-FM's Kevin and Bean Show, the invective started to fly after he made several references to Scientology theology and its reported central tenent, the story of Xenu.

Roecker says Jenna repeatedly said "What crimes have you committed?" and began screaming at Roecker, "Have you raped a baby?" as motorists on Los Feliz Boulevard drove by in snarled traffic.

Roecker says it appears that Bodhi Elfman prepared to take a swing at him, but thought against it.

Bizarrely, Roecker also says that the Elfmans had a young, twenty-something male companion with them whom they continually instructed to move away and cover his ears whenever references to Xenu were made.

Roecker says this is not the first time he has worn a t-shirt that has provoked similar reactions from fellow devotees of L. Ron Hubbard like Juliette Lewis, Lisa Marie Presley, and actor Hal Ozman, who worked on 'Dawson's Creek' with none other than a certain Katie Holmes. Sources at the Church of Scientology's Celebrity Centre say Roecker is no stranger to them.  Several non-celeb parishioners have also complained about Roecker's t-shirts.

Bodhi Elfman's rep Jenni Weinman tells TMZ that according to Bodhi "He was out for a Sunday stroll with his wife, when some guy walks by with a t-shirt on, very prominently attacking his religion. Words were extended and Bodhi and Jenna were personally attacked for their beliefs.  As they went about their business, the guy continued to try to illicit negative responses from the both of them. As they walked away he continued to scream propaganda and hate at them. Apparently he spent all Monday calling the press to promote himself."

571. I know the comments are supposed to be about the incident with Roecker but: To the woman who claims she is an attorney....

I know this is going to shock you but you're incredibly ignorant for someone who has a law degree.

First of all you didn't even step onto the soapbox until you said you were stepping down from it with your ensuing diatribe on dianetics and other religions.

Second - Americans DO attack the religious beliefs of Jews, Christians, Muslims, etc with the same fervor if not MORE than they do of the Scientologists.

Third - (and you being an attorney should know this) One cannot be "charged" with anything that's written as an editorial because it's just an opinion and I believe there is a protection of something called freedom of the press!

Fourth - you started right off the bat insulting the "average american" because you have an education that "lends itself to a higher analysis" and then you end it with PREACHING comments like "show a little tolerance" and "educate yourselves".

Your entire commentary shows how INTOLERANT you are of your fellow americans. (maybe if you had a sense of humor...) Perhaps you should go back to school and EDUCATE YOURSELF on common sense and tactfullness.

I certainly would not want such an condescending, self grandizing, tactless, and most of all IGNORANT person like you representing me in a courtroom.

572. HA HA HA HA....chuckle chuckle..

I am just elated to find that so many other people saw ROBYN'S ignorant commentary and responded to it intelligently and intelectually (unlike hers).
When I first saw her entry - I had to respond immediately because she really needed to be EDUCATED on the facts of her stupidity. But now, after reading many of the other commentaries, I realized that I was soooo not alone in my (constitutionaly protected opinion) of her.
Too bad she didn't stick around to hear the truth about herself. (obviously she isn't capable of a an intelligent response or maybe she's just too CHICKEN to respond! ) Although it's doubtfull that she would understand the depth of her hebetudinous mind. (hey robyn look it up if you don't understand any of the big words)
heh heh heh.....

573. It entertains me how someone tries to protect or justify their religion by screaming hate and profanity at others.

It entertains me how people walk door to door to promote their religion.

It entertains me how people refuse to listen openly to other people about their religion yet are quick to point out Pagans, Devil Worshippers and other Misc. Heathens.

574. OK Scientology is nothing but a scam....they suck people into believing their crap to rob people of their money.L Ron Hubbard was charged with fraud. His wife went to jail for wiretapping the IRS (Operation Snow White)
Since they don't believe in psychiatry and psychiatric medication to help the sick caused one guy to kill his mother (who was a member of the Church) http://theunfunnytruth.ytmnd.com/
Is this the world we want future generations to live in ? Very scary thought of a world run by cultists who believe in a science fiction writer.......

575. But a RELIGION that makes you pay 1000 EURO an hour to be "SEE THE LIGHT"... isn't that credible.
Also...
L. RON HUBBARD book is your typical POP-psocology book, but with the difference that he actually copied it from a GERMAN psychology book from 1934...
That's why he preaches to his followers NOT TO READ NEWSPAPERS and that PSCHYCOLOGY IS BAD...
and not only that try looking at this site...
www.xenu.net
HIGHLY RECOMEND IT...
Sorry for my English...

576. Sounds to me like the Elfmans are the true bigots. They automatically assumed that calling something "gay" is a bad thing. Perhaps Mr. Roecker wore his "Scientology is Gay" shirt to compliment the Religion of Scientology. The word "gay" sure has changed over the years. I think I might start using it to compliment others too. When my coffee finishes brewing, I think I'll head down to my division chief's office and tell him that he looks very "gay" today.

577. Excuse me Krissy.. WHO THE HELL ARE YOU to say John Roecker is a loser? He is one of the most artistically talented people in the world who stands what he believes in and is not afraid to make a statement about it. You said yourself "Who are we to judge?" yet you also were also the one who sed he was a loser and looked smug.. my dear..YOUR THE

578. Steven Spielberg is JEWISH - not a whack Scientologist, as Roslyn Branch mentions in her posting (#7, above). Maybe THAT'S why he doesn't flaunt his religion.

As for the Hubbardites - God have mercy on anyone who puts any stock in a 'religion' founded by a sot that wrote while under the influence of uppers and rum (check into these idiots - you won't believe what they worship!).

Hollyweird types treat Scientology like it's as harmless as the Knights of Columbus or the Masons - but they actually are f*cked in the head and vicious.

So f*** 'em. F*** 'em all.

579. Have you raped a baby? what the hell is that suppose to mean??

580. To the "attorney" who commented on the first page:

I have my doubts as to whether you are a lawyer. An actual attorney would likely not announce their profession at the beginning of a comment, unless they were about to quote law or legal procedure. And saying that being one gives you a higher level of analysis is just stupid. As if stating that will make us take your views more seriously.

Secondly, "relevance" is an important concept in law. "Relavence" does not exist. I just really can't stand B.S.

581. Well, I didn't bother reading through all the comments - just the first and last pages. So, perhaps I'm covering something that's been covered before.

I am a Scientologist. I'm also an engineer. I looked at it with "a healthy skeptism" for years, read all the negative commentary on it that was prolific at the start of the web, 10 years ago.

I can tell from many of the comments that I've read that people are speaking on my religion with very VERY little actual experience with it. The reason I discounted the things on the web (and I spent about a year in doubt on Scientology because of what I had read) was that the complainers on the web had nothing more positive to offer as an alternative. No solution, just hatin'. Kinda like most Jerry Springer episodes.

Anyway, I'm a dedicated person who cares about helping people, and I can tell you that it hasn't had a damn thing to do with money. And I've worked in the church, and I know where the money goes, and so does the IRS - they investigated the hell out of us in the early nineties, and gave us a clean bill of health.

Anyway, yes there is freedom of speech, and I would die to maintain that right for all. That doesn't mean you can't do something irresponsible with that freedom. And I have freedom of speech to tell you when you're creating bigotry against me. I wouldn't take away your right to give an opinion, but I'm not gonna give up mine and not tell you how I feel.

Love is a better policy than uninformed hate.

Oh - and as a little comment - if you want to call me brainwashed, I want you to examine the level of jerk you are assigning to yourself with that comment. You are saying, "You no longer have valid thoughts. Not only that, but I have sufficient worldly knowledge and stature to tell you that you aren't worthy of having thoughts. My thoughts are valid, but yours aren't, and you don't even know what you think." Oh yeah?

My response, if you choose to say it: come say that to my face - not that I fist-fight people, but I'll think you'll find that you are looking another live human being face to face, and you won't be so pompous and hateful and dispassionate as you are "bravely" being over the anonymous internet. The last girl who insinuated that I was in a cult to my face got the above argument stated in no uncertain terms, and she didn't even realize what a bigot she was being until I pointed that out to her. And, she kindly and sincerely apologized. I'm actually a pretty likable guy, believe it or not.

Have some love, my peeps. This world is rough enough without bigotry and needless hostility, don't you think?

582. I find it ironic. Most people in most religions generally have a thick skin, but going by past precedents, scientologists are WAY too uptighht. This incident screams Deja Vu of when Tom Cruise sued the creators of South Park and had the scientology episode banned outside of the US. But hey I guess we should all shut up before they personally attack us- or worse.... hit us all with individual class action lawsuits.
