Jay-Z Escalates Cristal Boycott: Krug Life?

Poppin' open bottles of Cristal has been a staple of rap videos for the last several years.  But, last week Cristal exec Frederic Rouzaud said the brand is trying to distance itself from the rap community:

"(It's) unwelcome attention. What can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

Jay - Z says no to CristalA miffed Jay-Z released a statement announcing that he'll no longer use Cristal products:

"It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the 'hip-hop' culture as "unwelcome attention." I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life."

And, apparently Jay took Rousaud's suggestion on other brands to heart:

"The response from our customers at 40/40 has been incredible. "This weekend, we sold more bottles of Krug and Perrier Jouet than [ever] and we expect that trend to continue. They are great products and we are glad they have embraced us with open arms."

Now, Mr. Carter is going even further in his Cristal boycott. He's going to remove all Cristal references from his lyrics. His rep says:

"You can bet that Cristal will not be in Jay's lyrics on Sunday. What will replace it, only he knows at the time, because he rhymes on the fly - so don't be surprised to hear something different."

So who will Jay-Z give props to at this weekend's show, Dom, Krug or both? Either way, Jay's feelings for Mr. Rousaud's brand are Cristal clear.

Jay you are not getting the word out fast enough. People have not heard. I have been spreading the word, but I only know one or two folk, where you can reach millions.

I am willing fo us to do something together for once, even if it is to bring down one company. If we can create community boycotting this company, there may be larger things we can unite on until companies feel our economic strength.

Make it a movement, then let's aspire to higher things and other product impacts until we are seen as something other than usable objects.

Not racist, not elitist, but economics.

17. Personally if i was the owner of crystal, i wouldn't have said that, just because rappers have made him a lot of money by buying his product.. but as i read the statment he made, there is not a racist comment in there.. so i don't know what J is talking about..

18. "Splash" !! You all missed the boat on this one. After years of distributing wine products, Cristal being one of the products. I can tell you the House of Roederer Estates which produces Cristal is driven more by history and quality than by fame or fortune. Cristal is always an allocated product restaurants and clubs have to fight to get allocated bottles, there is even a very large grey market on Cristal. it takes an extremely refined nose and Palate to really distinguish the differences and nuances between a Krug , Dom , Veuve Grand Dame. This usually takes years of wine experience and hundreds of tastings. So when Rouzaud makes a statement like "unwanted attention" He is protecting his brand and product so that it will be available for the people that can truly enjoy it to its fullest. Not just tossing it down for a quick buzz. Go back to your Malt liquor for that. People waste stupid amounts of money on things they haven't taken the time to learn how to enjoy and get the most out of there dollar. Hell go buy some Totts you won't know the difference.
