Brangelina Guilts Hollywood Into Giving

Paris Hilton / Angelina JolieIt's the Brangelina charity effect.

Thanks to the media mileage Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have wrung out of their Africa charity work, celebrities today are falling over themselves to show the world how public spirited they are.

Latest example: Nicole Kidman, who spent the days before her wedding to crooner Keith Urban visiting Sydney's Children's Hospital with her own kids. The happy couple is reportedly asking guests to donate to charity rather then buy gifts.

In addition, Cher in recent days has drummed up money for troop helmets in Iraq, while K-Fed has thrown his substantial celebrity weight behind the fate of ... pennies.

While the new round of celeb heart pouring is an outgrowth of Brangelina's work in Africa, other celebs have been big in the free-money circuit for years. Big donators include: Oprah Winfrey, who gave $52 million in 2005 to charity; Sandra Bullock, who donated $1 million twice, once to the Red Cross following 9/11 and the second to Tsunami Relief; and Paul Newman, who has donated nearly $200 million in after-tax profits of his "Newmans Own" products. There's also Bono who, in our opinion, should be reaching sainthood by the end of the week.

Then there's Paris Hilton, who somehow seems not to have received the charity memo.

Our favorite socialite was recently accused of leaving an Australian children's charity high and dry. Paris reportedly pledged to organize a star-studded benefit concert in Los Angeles to benefit Paradise Kids. The charity claims Paris said she would have friends Backstreet Boys and Blu Cantrell perform, and at one point even Missy Elliott's name was mentioned. So far, two years have passed and Paris has yet to return with the big-name acts. We called Paris' rep and he said he was researching the matter. At press time had not gotten back to us.

This isn't the first time Paris has gotten in trouble for snubbing a charity. At the Elton John Aids Foundation post-Oscar bash she failed to pay for a ticket for entrance to the party. A rep later told the press that Paris had instructed her accountant to cut a check for $10,000 for the foundation.

To help Paris clear up her bad charity karma, we checked to see how she could help others if she followed Angelina's lead and donated one third of her earnings.

According to Forbes magazine, Paris made $6.5 million in 2004. If she gave one-third of that to charity, roughly $2.1 million, here's where the money could go.

* In Namibia she could feed 4,205 families for a year.

* She could build 429 one-room school houses in a developing country, according to Free the Children.

* The North Star Foundation says they could specially train 858 dogs to be companions for autistic children.

* According to Habitat for Humanity's website, they could potentially build either 35 houses in the United States or up to 2,681 houses in some third world countries.

31. I commend Brad and Angelina for their efforts to help the people of Namibia (and other under-privileged, third-world, or developing countries)...however, charity starts at home. Wasn't very nice of Angelina to flirt with another woman's husband--or of Brad to ditch his wife for someone else.
As for the other stars mentioned in this story, I don't think all of them were "inspired" by Angelina's philanthropy. Like so many people have said, a lot of them have been donating to charity for years--some since before Angelina was even born. Angelina may have the official title of "Goodwill Ambassador," but I think many stars have earned this title whether they "officially" carry it or not--people like Oprah, Bono, and Elton John--who have been around for a while and have been giving almost since the day they became famous. We just hear more about Angelina because she seems to be more popular to more people than many of the others (or, at least, she certainly turns up in the tabloids more often!) It seems disparaging to all of these other stars to say that Brangelina, who have been "good-willing it" as a team for only a short time, can "guilt trip" so many long-time charity donors into giving. Hope those mentioned don't feel slighted by this bad press.
As for Paris Hilton...that girl needs to get a clue! She's starting to sound like that guy that promised to donate a bunch of money to Harvard and...whoops! forgot or something. Paris is essentially just a spoiled little girl and probably makes all sorts of high-fallutin promises that don't pan out. She doesn't strike me as mature enough to know how to handle her money charitably.

32. I think it's unfair and lame to credit the growth of celebrities giving to charities because of Brangelina. Many have been doing it far longer than Angelina, the only thing is that they don't publicize it.

33. What exactly is Paris Hilton's title that she makes that much money? Does she actually work for any of it? It's sickening how people who make so much money & then hord it all.

I also think that its great of those who are doing so well to donate to charities, etc. But, start at home first before you branch out to other countries. There's a lot of poverty here in the US despite how strong a nation we seem to be.

35. Personally I feel that Paris Hilton is a stuck up little bitch. If she could just donate a little of her money to charity, she could help sooo much. My family is poor, we always have been. I do not have a job, I'm only 16 and can't yet find one. But we donate to every charity, we have enough heart to put what little we have into helping others. When the guy sits in front of Wal-Mart with the bell at Christmas-time, we put the change we have left from shopping into the basket. When we go into the city of Chicago, we live just outside, and we see the guys that spend their lives playing an instrument outside for just a little cash, we put money in. When someone has a fundraiser, we always spend as much as we can afford to at that time. Now, maybe getting whatever you want your whole life makes you think differently, but I was raised to believe that no matter what, you put others before yourslef. When someone needs your help, you drop what you're doing to help them. Maybe Paris was raised to be greedy and accept what she has without appealing to anybody else's needs or wants. Maybe she feels she doesn't neeed to donate because other people are. I don't know. But what I do know is this: my family barely scrapes by half the time, and WE are the ones that are helping out. the people in my community, the working and middle class people of my town, are the ones that help out. We can't afford new clothes when they are needed and sometimes we can't affford to even buy off the dollar menu at McDonalds, but we still donate to charity whenever there is one in need. My point is, if people like me and my family can help out those less forunate, then the people who can DEFINITELY afford it, should DEFINITELY be helping. Anybody who can turn their back on someone in need, is in need themselves...of a lifestyle change or a day in the life of someone like me. I can' t tell you how many of my friends look up to Paris Hilton, wishing everyday that they could afford the things she does. Wishing that maybe they could just have ONE nice thing to hold on to. Sometimes just wishing that maybe someone like her could buy air-conditioning and computers that actually work for our school and the other schools in need of money. But then they read articles like this and are, once again, let down by the one they admire most. I know I wrote this about Paris Hilton, and it probably does sound harsh, but I was aiming it at every person who can afford to give a lot, but won't lift a finger to give a little.

36. it's great that b&a is doing so much for charity, the problem that I have with it is all the publicity that they are getting for it. there are so many other people, famous and non famous, that contribute time and money to charities and you don't hear a thing about them. you know why, cause that is how they want it!! You are suppose to give out of the goodness of your heart and not brag about it.

37. I think it's great that Angelina is so committed to other nations. While she may not be very wild like she once was, she is obviously still self-centered if she is stealing other women's husbands. She may be passionate about charity work but obviously she's not very passionate about other people's feelings.

38. It's really pathetic when people feel the need to attack others for the good that they do in the world. Sure, I believe that there are a number of "Celebrities" that have contributed to charity; Bono & Oprah being two of those folks. However, it cannot be negated that Angelina has had much to do with the publicity of it all. People are interested in her work and in her life. She knows that and she uses it to her advantage. In other words, she uses her publicity for good and to make the world aware of the global community and of global issues. I don't think that she is in any way implying that we don't have our own national issues, but she's already doing alot!! What's wrong with the rest of the country that we won't do some of the work ourselves?? As for Brad, I think he just jumped on the Angie Bandwagon. He saw something special in her that he truly loved. Something that he didn't see in Jen. I love Jen but she's all caught up in her Hollywood career these days. Angelina is Wonder Woman. She manages to do it all AND be passionate about it (acting, charity work, motherhood, etc.) Plus, she's gorgeous, brilliant and super-hard-working. I firmly believe that he was no longer happy with his lifestyle with Jen. She wanted a career and he wanted a family. Why is that so wrong? No man can be "STOLEN" from a woman. His marriage was over WAY before Angelina showed up. I love Brangelina. Keep up the good work!
And for the record, Paris Hilton is an idiot. Why would we even EXPECT for her to think of anyone but herself. She may have only made $6.5 last year, but that doesn't include her Family Wealth as a Hilton.

39. Giving back is the least those overpaid celebrities can do. Afterall it's the public who has made them their riches. I'm so sick of seeing those stupid Kitson shopping girls blowing money on crap that could feed a small village. Typically when celebrities give, it's really about the publicity than it is about caring about the poor. Not to much that most of them are so superficial and can only use their brain if someone does something that is trendy. Having babies and giving to the poor is the littlest trend, which I assure, will fade.

43. I would like to begin by asking why these stories are even covered in the first place. Giving to charity involves some sort of a sacrifice- whether in time or money. With the exception of a few celebrities, im afraid that hollywood is not a prime example of sacrifice. Why cover stories where Angelina and Brad are hailed as heroes for their benefits? It shows nothing, and proves nothing, about what true sacrifice is about. Frankly, it doesnt really mean anything to go around and hold AIDS babies when you can just return to you $50 million castle and shower.

44. As much as I appreciate the charitable donations of celebrities to countries overseas I have to wonder if these people ever looked at the poverty in our own country. There are thousands of people in the United States who are starving and having to endure substandard conditions. Hey, did they notice what Hurricane Katrina did to thousands of people who were already poor and disenfranchised?

45. I cant believe Paris Hilton. Shes such a tease. MY god. It doesn't matter whether the article says these people were guilted in to donating. The whole point of it is that in the end they donated.
