Brangelina Guilts Hollywood Into Giving

Paris Hilton / Angelina JolieIt's the Brangelina charity effect.

Thanks to the media mileage Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have wrung out of their Africa charity work, celebrities today are falling over themselves to show the world how public spirited they are.

Latest example: Nicole Kidman, who spent the days before her wedding to crooner Keith Urban visiting Sydney's Children's Hospital with her own kids. The happy couple is reportedly asking guests to donate to charity rather then buy gifts.

In addition, Cher in recent days has drummed up money for troop helmets in Iraq, while K-Fed has thrown his substantial celebrity weight behind the fate of ... pennies.

While the new round of celeb heart pouring is an outgrowth of Brangelina's work in Africa, other celebs have been big in the free-money circuit for years. Big donators include: Oprah Winfrey, who gave $52 million in 2005 to charity; Sandra Bullock, who donated $1 million twice, once to the Red Cross following 9/11 and the second to Tsunami Relief; and Paul Newman, who has donated nearly $200 million in after-tax profits of his "Newmans Own" products. There's also Bono who, in our opinion, should be reaching sainthood by the end of the week.

Then there's Paris Hilton, who somehow seems not to have received the charity memo.

Our favorite socialite was recently accused of leaving an Australian children's charity high and dry. Paris reportedly pledged to organize a star-studded benefit concert in Los Angeles to benefit Paradise Kids. The charity claims Paris said she would have friends Backstreet Boys and Blu Cantrell perform, and at one point even Missy Elliott's name was mentioned. So far, two years have passed and Paris has yet to return with the big-name acts. We called Paris' rep and he said he was researching the matter. At press time had not gotten back to us.

This isn't the first time Paris has gotten in trouble for snubbing a charity. At the Elton John Aids Foundation post-Oscar bash she failed to pay for a ticket for entrance to the party. A rep later told the press that Paris had instructed her accountant to cut a check for $10,000 for the foundation.

To help Paris clear up her bad charity karma, we checked to see how she could help others if she followed Angelina's lead and donated one third of her earnings.

According to Forbes magazine, Paris made $6.5 million in 2004. If she gave one-third of that to charity, roughly $2.1 million, here's where the money could go.

* In Namibia she could feed 4,205 families for a year.

* She could build 429 one-room school houses in a developing country, according to Free the Children.

* The North Star Foundation says they could specially train 858 dogs to be companions for autistic children.

* According to Habitat for Humanity's website, they could potentially build either 35 houses in the United States or up to 2,681 houses in some third world countries.

46. I agree with the other posts. There are many celebrities that were into doing charity even before Angelina was on the radar. The thing is that they don't do it for publicity...they do it quietly. I don't think that celebrities are being generous now because Brangelina gave them a guilt trip...GIVE ME A BREAK. Plus, Nicole Kidman has been involved with charity herself. And about asking to donate instead of wedding presents she is not the first celebrity to do that. I heard millions of celebrities doing the same things even fortheir birthdays. I can'tthink of any names right now but it is certainly not the first time. I do remember Prince William doing it for one of his birthdays.

47. I used to be caught up inthe Hollywood scene and made a very good living here. Now that I am retired at the age of only 42 I have moved to Encenada, Mexico. The lady who lives across the street from me used to be the housekeeper there. She is 38 years old and has one son who is 12. Her boyfriend, who used to be her employer, told me that when he saw her home, which she built with her sons help, out of scrap pallet wood and sheet plastic to prevent leaking, a blanket for a door,on a piece of land she was "squatting" on, he told her to move in with him immediatley. Poverty is everywhere you look. If you choose to look. Most people seem to look the other way and don't let it effect them. People here in Tinseltown have no idea what lies outside their borders. I hope I never become de-sensitised to the poverty just three hours south of Hollywood. I understand that Northern Mexico is not even poor in contrast to most third world countries. If we wont help our neighbors, who will? Their own government puts their heads in the sand. If we dont help now, how many more kids will have to die? Last winter 10 children died from the cold nights. People can't afford to insulate their houses. I'm sure Miss Paris Hilton spends more on her dog each day than it would cost to feed a family of four each day in Mexico.

48. I think Brad and Angelina should go live in Africa. Clearly, they do not care for the starving and abused children in the US. They are using Americans to make their money and then giving it to another country. It is a disgrace. They should not be considered Americans.

49. I think Dawn Robinson needs to go to a third world country for a day or two.
Children in Mexico as well as children in the States, I'm sure, are abused by American pedofiles, willingly, just so they can earn a meal. The difference is that in Mexico, when they are caught, the podofiles buy their way out of it.

51. The only reason celebrities do charity work is to help their own ego. I know they all "really help" but what peace is there in the world? How much are they helping? That's what I thought.

52. It is incredible that people have nothing better to do with their time than to LOOK for something negative - even in positive situations. Brad and Angelina are doing what they choose to do - give back - give to chairty. Why does there have to be a comparison? They should simply be commended for their humanitarian efforts - should also be commended for not feeding into the negativity expressed from Jennifer Aniston after her break up with Brad - well Jen did need the publicity to keep her name in the media. She should be thankful to Brad for making her famous. Brad moved up in the world. He is now with a true star (truley talented and naturally beautiful- not one that has to be plastered all over the media (Jen) to continue to gain popularity. When Jen actually begins to act - she will have come into her own, as oppose to being a celebrity made by her once boyfriend and former husband. Hello people, Jen made the decision to divorce Brad why is this a problem? As for Paris, it is amazing that the media has to always pull her name into the issue at hand (by the way, I do like Paris Hilton). You say she hasn't given to charity - how about all of the other "rich" celebrities that have not given - and you know there are plenty of them. If they all used some of their collective wealth, perhaps there would be less poverty and sickness in the world.

53. It's amazing that extremely wealthy people with NO talent (Paris Hilton) show No concern for people in extreme need both here and in developing countries. They are truly self centered egotistical jerls (for lack of a printable name). Lets hope that their karma leaves them wallowing in misery!

54. I must have mis-understood this article. I can not find anywhere where Brad and Angelina determined that they have "guilt hollywood into giving". I believe this was simply how the power of the press decided to present the article. So many have stated that although they "love Brangelina", they are not the first to give to charity nor are they responsible for setting the precedence. It is amazing that the printed word can spark such controversy. I do not believe Brad and Angelina gave to charity for the sake of publicity nor were their intentions to "guilt hollywood into giving". They were doing what was in their hearts to do. The African Nation simply publicaly recognized them for their humanitarian efforts - as they should have. If their giving has prompted others to give, how can their be such negativity regarding this issue? I read recently where Angelina thanked all of those company's that "gave" her new baby gifts. Other celebrities who have had children recently never gave a thanks (according to the article) - as if they were owed this. This speaks to the good nature of Angelina. Nicole and Angelina - two different people doing different things - it is as simple as that.

55. for starters, angelina and brad r not "traitors" just b.c they helped other countries more ... other countries who need it WAAAAAY more than the poor in our country do..... our poor r def. here, but nothing compares to the poverty these countries face in much greater numbers... and further more, nobody would dedicate their life to goodwill work for "publicity" b/c being paris hilton which is way more glamorous and disgustingly selfish can also get a person publicity apparently.... doesnt take much to get on tv so i dnt believe all these celebs r "fakes" .....

58. I agree with the comments about the US....we have starving and needy families right here. They should care more about helping out their fellow Americans or else move to their beloved third world countries.

59. Angelina is reported to have said she 'Gets paid such a rediculous amount of money for the work she does she might as well give it away!!'
Most of the celebrities make so much money...They should give more of it away and they should start in The United States. (Sorry to say)
Bradgelina...More like...Fag-gelina...They diffintely were not the first celebrity couple in history to donate money or anything else.
It just turns out Anglina works hard for her money all right...lying on her back!
Remember she has broken up more than one marriage in her life seducing her co-stars!!

60. Angelina Jolie has been quoted by saying, "I make a rediculous amount of money for the work I do, I might as well give it away!"
Most of the celebrities make such a rediculouis amount of money...They ALL should give more of it away and they should be starting here...in the United States.(Sorry to say)
Bradgelina...More like FAKE-gelina...She is said to be the new Mother Theresa... If that''s the case...Stop the world...I want to get off...Mother Theresa NEVER would have even thought of having a baby out of Wedlock.
It turns out Agelina works hard for her money all right...Lying on here back!!
