Nicole Kidman Wasn't Married to Tom Cruise...

Nicole Kidmanat least according to the Catholic Church in Australia.

Many around the world were scratching their heads this past weekend, trying to figure out exactly how Kidman was able to get married as a Catholic in a Catholic ceremony, as the Church does not allow for a second marriage (in the Church) after a divorce. Many assumed that Kidman had gotten her marriage to Tom Cruise annulled, which would technically have paved the way for a second marriage in the Church.

Well, not so fast. Kidman's marriage to Cruise lasted 10 years -- a little long to plead temporary insanity -- and considering how notoriously difficult it is to have the Church grant an annulment (they're not handing them out like communion wafers), Kidman may have figured out how to get around the requirement -- she reportedly didn't need an annulment at all.

The BBC is reporting that Kidman's 10-year union to Cruise wasn't recognized by the Catholic Church of Australia. The service was seen only as a legal ceremony and not a spiritual one. In other words, according to the Catholic Church anyway, it never happened. All Kidman had to prove was that it was dissolved legally and she was free to marry any country crooner she wanted. A loophole to be sure, but one that allowed Kidman to reconnect her Catholic faith with Keith Urban, the man she loves.

91. Nicole knows, says Tom. Yes. she does. She did Tom wrong by cheating. He would never divorce her when she was pregnant. It was NOT his. Tom is and was a gentleman! Not a dork or a jerk. Nicole was a nobody when Tom met her. She says she still loves him and he says that of her too. She knows SHE was a jerk.. But, I still like her! And Tom. Give the guy a break!

92. Rosalie, I can only guess that, judging from Tom Cruise's wooden-headed, Scientology-based opinions, the collapse of their marriage was probably due to conflict that arose from his devotion to that cult/religion. It could have also included conflict in child-rearing beliefs that also stemmed from his cult/religion's beliefs that perhaps she had at one time agreed with and later changed her mind or possibly didn't fully understand to begin with. Maybe when faced with actual daily application of those twisted beliefs she couldn't comply and was given some sort of ultimatum by TC. Wasn't there a rumor buzzing around their separation that she had been pregnant and had miscarried? Maybe it wasn't a miscarriage. Maybe it was an abortion or something she had been doing that triggered miscarriage. Who knows? Fact is, she's out of that horrible loop now and hopefully on her way to a happier and more healthy relationship that will take her through the years to her final days. I also commend her, as others here have, for being one of the few sensible brides to have put the horse IN FRONT OF THE CART for once and waited to have children AFTER the marriage has had time to settle and strengthen. YOU GO MATES!! God bless you both!

93. Scientology is not a cult. It is a belief...Don't fault people who believe in God and all things biblical because you know nothing about it. Tom is a great guy and Nicole will tell you that!

95. Oh, and by the way, before anybody gets into too much of a tither about what the Catholic church will and will not recognize and so forth how about we all remember the problems the Catholic church is having right now with its PRIESTS NOT REMEMBERING TO KEEP THEIR FILTHY, LYING HANDS OFF THE INNOCENT YOUNG BOYS WHO COME TO THE CHURCH FOR GUIDANCE AND FORGIVENESS AND ARE INSTEAD MOLESTED AND THEN GIVEN A WHOLE NEW PILE OF GUILTY FEELINGS AND TOLD WHO-KNOWS-WHAT IN ORDER TO KEEP THEIR LITTLE MOUTHS SHUT ABOUT IT!!!!! The whole idea of tip-toing around the technicalities of that church MAKES ME FURIOUS!!!!!! I COULDN'T CARE LESS WHAT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH RECOGNIZES SINCE THEY DON'T SEEM TO RECOGNIZE THEIR OWN FAULTS FIRST!!!! TO HELL WITH THEM, AND by that I mean the people who run it, not the followers. I just hope that people who do follow the Catholic religion are taking a good long hard look at anything the church is asking you to do or to believe and not just taking everything at face value.

97. It's funny, that Katie is also Catholic. Unfortunately, she is also young and probably very impressionable. I hope she doesn't get caught in TC's web. Let's hope, for her sake, that she's got some balls that are as big as his and will be able to stand on her own two feet. So far, she hasn't had much to say that wasn't programmed into her. I wonder what ever happened to the Scientology chaparone she had with her there for a while. Also, I wonder what she has had to agree to in regards to raising that poor baby in the Scientology way. Could this all be a reason the wedding is the last step in this whole thing? Not finalizing anything???

98. I hear that she agreed to stay married to Tom for 10 years, but would not take the next step of being impregnated by L Ron Hubbard's sperm. Seems like she served her 10 years in purgatory here on earth and I am glad she didn't give in to the Scientologist's idea of a second coming of their leader through her body and whatever that marriage was all about. I feel sorry for Katie Holmes, who has given birth already and supposedly is getting ready for another baby, and yet is not married yet. She is Catholic as well...maybe some psychiatric drugs are in order for Tom, after all... he is seeming a bit like an "untreated"....and he doth protest against them to much.

99. Hey "pedo priest"! At first I was getting upset at all your bullshit comments but when I saw your screenname here I was able to understand your ignorance. By the way, I don't care how Nicole Kidman ended up doing "The Others." That was a creepy movie and definitely not the one that made her career. In fact, it was probably one of her more forgettable movies along with those disasters she made with Tom, "Far and Away" and "Eyes Wide Shut." She came into her own with MOULIN ROUGE. Whatever benefits she experienced by being married to Tom Cruise I'm sure she paid for them dearly and I'm equally sure he didn't suffer any by having her on his arm all those years.

100. Give me a break people!!!! They probably gave a very nice donation to the church, and they looked the other way. Regardless, she would still have to have her marriage to the idiot, Tom annulled.........whether it was 10 years or 20!! Catholic laws don't vary from country to country.....everything has a price, even religion.

101. if she wasn't married to tom cruise... then why did tom had to pay her millions at the time of their separation????? and why did she take it?? it would have been great for tom if this informarion would have crept up abt 6 years ago.

102. 10 years later has NOTHING to do with it. This concerns ONLY the ceremony on the wedding day NOT what happened after. It wasn't a valid sacramental marriage that day and time doesn't change that.

Plus Tom Cruise was already married and divorced before he met Nicole Kidman so that right there nullifies it.

103. I am so glad for the posts by Jensen and Nunya. It was irresponsible of the staff to report the facts in such a way. But it was quite an attention-grabebr,wasn't it?

People who don't understand the Catholic faith certainly feel free to bash it. In this day and age of being sensitive to diversity (esp toward non-Americans) it still sickens me that so many are bigoted.

104. I can never understand why these Hollywood stars even bother getting married. The mariages never last and they just get marry over and over. The stars that dont get married(ieGoldie Hawn and Kurt Russell) seem to last together longer. The moment 2 stars start dating the first thing we hear is"when will they tie the knot"?

105. Yes, the Catholic Church does recognize marriages outside it's altar. I am a divirced Catholic, remarried in a Protestant Church and as soon as I remarried I was automatically excommunicated. The RC can't have it both ways but it always makes exceptions for the rich and famous!
