Nobody Puts Barbara In a Corner

Barbara Walters & Star JonesStar Jones has left "The View" – permanently, according to her now-former co-host and boss, Barbara Walters. The show aired this morning with just Walters, Joy Behar, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck taking their customary seats at the now oddly empty round table, and Jones' name and picture has been removed from the opening credits.

After the ladies took their seats, Walters began the show, dryly, "And then there were three."

Summoning as much patrician chill as she could, Barbara gave as good as she got: She told the audience that Star wouldn't be coming back, and that though she had purposely given her a few months to find a new gig and had given her the chance to "leave with dignity," her co-host had "made another choice" by talking to People magazine and making "other announcements" in the media yesterday.

Walters also said that she and the producers had decided not to renew Star's contract several months ago (which, she says, Star knew) though she didn't go into the reasons why.

Jones, perhaps to try to take the offensive, appeared earlier this morning before "The View" on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show and said that she wanted to leave when they told her contract wasn't going to be renewed two months ago and that, until yesterday, Joy and Elisabeth didn't even know she had gotten the boot.

Jones told Seacrest that "if anyone should feel betrayed, it should be me," referring to comments Walters made yesterday that she had felt "betrayed" by Star's jumping the gun.  And she complained that she found out about how Rosie O'Donnell – who Star said had been "nasty and insulting and vicious" about her weight loss – was brought onto the show at the Emmy Awards, when Barbara announced it.

Star also acknowledged that she had made some missteps in commercializing her wedding planning to the hilt, saying "I want to take full responsibility for the audience thinking, 'Star abandoned us.'"

16. STAR shouldn't be blamed here. Barbara is a back stabber.

17. Star was getting a little carried away with her new look. This is just an eye opener for her. She just lost control. Star is not perfect but she is a believer. Star will prevail. Barbara needs to go and retire. She is a sight for sore eyes and she is losing HER MIND. Hiring Rosie I thought Barbara had more class. I cannot stand the OLD Hag NOW.

18. ELISABETH'S PRESENCE, AS, TO A CERTAIN EXTENT, WAS STAR'S, IS THERE, ala JERRY SPRINGER, TO MAKE THE VIEWER FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELF, THEIR VALUES, REASONING, INTELLIGENCE, ETC.

ELISABETH IS BOUND TO HAVE A LONG-RUN WITH THE VIEW, BUT I'M TAKING INFORMAL WAGERS ABOUT WHEN ABC WILL SYNDICATE "THE VIEW" TO "ANIMAL PLANET" FOR FEATURE SPECIALS SHOWING HOW ROSIE BRUTALLY TRAPS AND THEN EATS ELISABETH FOR LUNCH - - - WITH THE VICTIM BEING SO PRE-OCCUPIED WITH COMPLETING HER MENSA APPLICATION THAT SHE ISN'T EVEN AWARE THAT ROSIE IS ABOUT TO FINISH THE LAST BITE OF HER LAST EXTREMITY.

19. ABC should fire the entire group. They are all annoying. I stopped watching after the first week 9 years ago. To ABC: This is a good time to START OVER.

20. I'm not a fan of Star Jones. And I'm not particularly crazy about Elisabeth Hasselback, but I think that the combination of Elisabeth and Rosie should be really interesting!

They should give Star extra severance pay for all of this extra publicity for the View right now. Very soon, her fame will fade...

21. i won't be watching the view anymore. as vulgar as star was, she WAS entertaining. her interaction w/her cohosts was hilarious on some days. the only other firecracker on that show veira. i'll probably end up watching whatever show that star ends up on as i will w/veira. good luck ladies!!! who needs ABC? they're as dull as that elizabeth hasselbeck!! can someone tell me how SHE stays on the show???!!??

22. Don't know why it didn't happen sooner! She always showed her displeasure if someone disagreed with her -- she overstepped her being a part of a "team". She showed her dislike for Joy B. and she had the look of superiority whenever something was said she didn't agree with. Yes, she went way overboard on her wedding -- takes a lot of guts to do what she did and then not shut up about it. I think Rosie will add a lot, I do not think she and Elizabeth will be incompatible, I am glad for the change, she had a chance to bow out gracefully but chose to go out negatively, which is what people will remember most about her -- upstaging.

23. I am thrilled Star is gone. It will be a much better show without her. She has become so arrogant and just obnoxious in the past 2 years it was the best thing that ABC could have done. Rosie will be a great addition to the cast. Best of luck ladies!

25. I'm thrilled that Star is gone. I never did like her. I'll actually watch the show now.

26. The View is business, and if Star's popularity has waned, then he needs to go, they dumped her on the E channel cuz she did a bad job on the Red Carpet. Star is not likeable, it's that simple, qnd on T.V. if you are going to be in peoples homes daily you need to be likeable.
My problem is now The View will be less likely to get rid of Elsabeth, who is terrible, and whose moronic comments, and closed minded attitude drives me crazy.

27. I am one of the people that is VERY HAPPY that Star is gone. I couldn't stand the show beause of her. I'm looking forward to Rosie joining the view. She is always entertaining and interesting. And of course, the reason we watch TV is to be entertained. I look forward to the new Fall season.

28. Face the facts Barbara, this is one situation you handled very poorly. Star Jones said nothing but the truth... You fired her! What did you expect? Did you think you could fire someone and ask them to continue your charade ? Did you honestly expect her to continue playing " nice, nice" so you could continue appearing compassionate and caring? I'm glad you spoke up today, your true colors showed and the world saw you for what you are... a cold, ruthless business woman.

29. I must say that i really liked star then she lost weight and it really became hard to watch her on the view-but i never expected her to be fired and like it or not that show will not succeed now that star is gone -star did what she had to do and if i were in that position i would've done the same thing -who are they to try and control her after they fired her-what the view did was classless and i must say i will not be watching -barbara walters is the liability forcing star to keep the fact that she was fired from the other host for all these months -and then getting mad at star for telling the truth that her contract was not renewed-

30. ABC, Barbara Walters, and the View are sorry can of mixed nuts. I recently read on the internet that ABC has polls that show ever since Star "commericalized" her wedding and campaigned for freebies that the public thinks less of Star. I don't buy it. Sure we americans thought it was tactless, but on the other hand those who gave her free stuff also benefited from her free adverstisements she did on the show. Let's do a poll of those businesses that benefited from Star's mentioning of their names on the show.

Barbara Walters and the View will sorely miss Star because now their African American viewership, althought slightly erroded anyway, will just continue to go down and more people will tune into all those stupid court shows that dominate the morning television landscape.
