Nobody Puts Barbara In a Corner

Barbara Walters & Star JonesStar Jones has left "The View" – permanently, according to her now-former co-host and boss, Barbara Walters. The show aired this morning with just Walters, Joy Behar, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck taking their customary seats at the now oddly empty round table, and Jones' name and picture has been removed from the opening credits.

After the ladies took their seats, Walters began the show, dryly, "And then there were three."

Summoning as much patrician chill as she could, Barbara gave as good as she got: She told the audience that Star wouldn't be coming back, and that though she had purposely given her a few months to find a new gig and had given her the chance to "leave with dignity," her co-host had "made another choice" by talking to People magazine and making "other announcements" in the media yesterday.

Walters also said that she and the producers had decided not to renew Star's contract several months ago (which, she says, Star knew) though she didn't go into the reasons why.

Jones, perhaps to try to take the offensive, appeared earlier this morning before "The View" on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show and said that she wanted to leave when they told her contract wasn't going to be renewed two months ago and that, until yesterday, Joy and Elisabeth didn't even know she had gotten the boot.

Jones told Seacrest that "if anyone should feel betrayed, it should be me," referring to comments Walters made yesterday that she had felt "betrayed" by Star's jumping the gun.  And she complained that she found out about how Rosie O'Donnell – who Star said had been "nasty and insulting and vicious" about her weight loss – was brought onto the show at the Emmy Awards, when Barbara announced it.

Star also acknowledged that she had made some missteps in commercializing her wedding planning to the hilt, saying "I want to take full responsibility for the audience thinking, 'Star abandoned us.'"

31. Not sure why everyone is getting on to Elisabeth's case-- she is there as a conservative to complement/counteract Joy the flaming liberal. As far as Star is concerned, I think she is getting the shaft. She got fired so that they could replace Merideth (who left just in time!) with an outspoken, miserable, tactless beast who will be the death of The View altogether. Didn't anyone wonder why Rosie couldn't get a job to save her life once she decided not to be the "Queen of Nice" anymore? Has Barbara completely lost her mind? I used to watch this in college, but haven't in years now that I work. I would definitely not tune in this fall-- if I were Elisabeth and Joy I would quit now while there is still hope for a future career.

32. I think Rosie O is going to kill the view. Everyone was OVER her when she had her own show. I'm not a Star fan either, she did nothing in the last year but look seductively at the camera. I mean get over yourself! So you lost weight, MOVE ON. The classiness of Meredith will be missed. Mark my word, this show is on it's way OUT!

33. I think the way that Miss Barabara Walters handled this was inexcusable.
To replace Star is one thing but to replace her with Rosie O'Donnel is a disgrace.
She is always on her high horse about something and she is not a pleasure to watch. And believe me. NO ONE CARE what Rosie thinks. I will NEVER watch this show again and I have a new opinion of Barbara Walters - and not for the better.

34. I actually like Star. She is interesting a brings a certain "something different" to the View. Who wants to watch a bunch of women who are all the same. That being said, Elisabeth is the most boring, irritating one on there. The way she states her conservative views is very irritating sometimes as she gives no leeway and everything is either black or white in her world. There is a way to state your opinion tactfully without putting down other people's views as if they are wrong, and she fails miserably at this. I wish she was given the boot long before Star.

35. As long as Barbara will be there and Joy will be there, I am still a big fan. Star is a very smart woman and I think her diet choice is nobodys business......but I also felt like she thought she was an "final answer" on every topic that was discussed. And she could be very irritating and smug about it. So bring on Rosie. I have even started to tolerate Elizabeth fairly well. Keep up the hot topics. Thats the best part!!!! Patty M. Redding CA

36. I got news for "The View"..putting in Rosie O'Donnell is not going to get them an Emmy. Just because she won some Emmy's for her show several years ago alot has happened since. For one, she bad mouthed alot of people as soon as the camera's cut. I have always liked her but I do not respect what she did.
Another problem I have with the show is everyone talks at once. I don't like that and find it irritating. If I wanted that I would go to a high school basketball game.

Good luck to Star Jones. I think it is her own business how she is losing the weight and my hat is off to her.

Adding Rosie is not going to make me watch the show any more than before..in fact probably less. I prefer Ellen Degeneres Show myself.

37. Ms. Walters can't have it both ways: she's whining that Star shouldn't have said anything about leaving but she knew ABC was not renewing her contract. Should make for a pretty boring shows coming up. Had to laugh at Rosie's digs too, about Star being less than forthcoming on how she lost weight. Isn't this the hypocrite that was carrying on about her hearthrob Tom Cruise when she is a lesbian. Can't help but wonder what America will think about THIS version of Rosie, out and proud.
Star apologized today for being so greedy about the wedding etc. She'll be on to something else soon, hopefully more exciting. I feel sorry for Joy, left behind with those two bores!

38. Star should feel fortunate. In every day life people are let go. They call it laid off, not fired. Does your employer give you 2-3 months notice before you're out the door to find another job? Stop complaining Star. Look forward to spending more time with your husband (chuckle) and have the chance to do the things you've always wanted (binge eating).

39. Barbara is just mad because she looks bad now. All Star did was tell the truth. Kudus to Star for telling the viewers on the day she wanted to.I don't think any of them have been happy for a while-I wondered why Meredith would leave a cushy job to start getting up so early(Always seemed like a step back for her). Now I get the feeling that Meredith was not happy with Barbara and wanted to get out of there. I only watched until the first commercial this morning-The View will never be the same and I will no longer be watching.

40. Oh, Please....The Starfest is finally over...Star Jones is getting her just desserts. Have you ever seen her interview one of her "black friends"? She lights up like a Christmas Tree. It gets even better when one of the guests is black and the other white. Talk about reverse discrimination. Then her "enough about me---what do you think of me? was a daily dose of ad nauseum. The conversation could be about the Middle East and she would find a way to bring it back to her. You would think she would read some of the message boards for some constructive criticism about the love-fest she has going with herself.

Barbara Walters is a consummate professional, as is Bill Geddes. They would not break up the team had they not had a justifiable reason. I for one could give them a hundred reasons to get rid of her...I guess dreams do come true.

And, for all of you who dislike Elizabeth. She doesn't have any more opinions than any of the others...Hello Joy Behar?????? She just happens to have different opinions than yours. Being a Republican is not a crime. The mix makes for good conversation for all of us. She brings a refreshing perspective to the group.

Good luck to you Rosie.

41. I applaud Star for making the announcement ahead of time! I feel that is why Barbara Walters and ABC are at this point and time crying betrayal! Star was betrayed in my opinion. One thing about some people of the other persuasion is Barbara didn't like the fact that this African American , Intelligent, Smart, together WOMAN got the ups on her so to speak and chose to tell the public about her dismissal at her own time! Some white folk are always wanting to be in control of everything....even the lives of others. Now it would have been okay had Star played along with Barbara and made the announcement when ABC and Barbara wanted her to on Thursday and played this thing up to the hilt as if Star decided to leave on her own...then once the show was aired and Star put on this great fake going away like Barbara and ABC planned...then the next day it would have been leaked by Barbara and ABC that STar was in fact fired! her contract was in fact not renewed! Then everyone would have been saying Star was fake and a liar...when she knew all along she didn't leave on her own terms...but that she was in fact fired...by virtue of ABC not renewing her contract....that's fired to me! So Star did the right thing....and went out with her integrity and self respect still in tact...and made Barbara and the powers that be....look like the liars and unethical people they truly are!

You go STar! and I love what you said on Tuesday....you don't know what the future holds...but you do KNOW WHO HOLDS THE FUTURE!

and remember every dog has their day!
they reap what they sew!
this too will pass for you to Star....keep your head up!

43. Good for Star for standing up for herself and being honest. I've never been a Star fan, but I respect anyone that choosing to show respect for themself but without tearing anyone else down. How can Barbara feel betrayed if it truly wasn't HER who got rid of Star. If your contract is not renewed you ARE fired. Fired does not just mean clean out your desk today and leave. She was fired and was honest about it and what's wrong with that. I agree with everyone regarding Elizabeth. She's an idiot and never trly knows what she's talking about. Please get rid of her!

44. SJR is probably one of the most nauseating TV peronalities ever to hit the small screen. From her well-publicized wedding to her demands for free services for that wedding to her disgusting weight-loss (she looks nothing short of a circus-show freakazoid), I am glad to see her off the air. What was THE VIEW thinking when they hired her?? Better late than never. Bravo to Babs and ABC. I actually might consider Tivo'ing THE VIEW now that The Beastula is gone!

45. Seems to me that there is a systematic release of blacks on shows on ABC and Star is just the next in line. (I smell a racism fish) In view of the disrepect that O'Donnal gave to "Star about her weight and and ABC hired her it is a disgrace. A Star is a "Star" and no amount of put down will change that.
