Nobody Puts Barbara In a Corner

Barbara Walters & Star JonesStar Jones has left "The View" – permanently, according to her now-former co-host and boss, Barbara Walters. The show aired this morning with just Walters, Joy Behar, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck taking their customary seats at the now oddly empty round table, and Jones' name and picture has been removed from the opening credits.

After the ladies took their seats, Walters began the show, dryly, "And then there were three."

Summoning as much patrician chill as she could, Barbara gave as good as she got: She told the audience that Star wouldn't be coming back, and that though she had purposely given her a few months to find a new gig and had given her the chance to "leave with dignity," her co-host had "made another choice" by talking to People magazine and making "other announcements" in the media yesterday.

Walters also said that she and the producers had decided not to renew Star's contract several months ago (which, she says, Star knew) though she didn't go into the reasons why.

Jones, perhaps to try to take the offensive, appeared earlier this morning before "The View" on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show and said that she wanted to leave when they told her contract wasn't going to be renewed two months ago and that, until yesterday, Joy and Elisabeth didn't even know she had gotten the boot.

Jones told Seacrest that "if anyone should feel betrayed, it should be me," referring to comments Walters made yesterday that she had felt "betrayed" by Star's jumping the gun.  And she complained that she found out about how Rosie O'Donnell – who Star said had been "nasty and insulting and vicious" about her weight loss – was brought onto the show at the Emmy Awards, when Barbara announced it.

Star also acknowledged that she had made some missteps in commercializing her wedding planning to the hilt, saying "I want to take full responsibility for the audience thinking, 'Star abandoned us.'"

61. WOW some of the comments are pretty harsh. I liked Merideth, too bad she's gone...and Elisabeth & Joy. I thought they each added something to the show. Especially Elisabeth, she's the youngest of the bunch and it is nice, refreshing to have her on the show. Star was a bit of a drama queen but she was also a good addtion to the show. I liked the crew the way it was...with Rosie coming on i think the show will not do good at all. Merideth was the rock, Star was the entertainment....I think Rosie will try to offer her opinon on everything. She had her break in the late 90's when she had her own talk show....then came out with all the lesbian rights crap and now she is on this show? Hmm....

62. Star brought alot of class and caring to the show. i wont be watching it anymore. Rosie is just a loud mouth without much brain behind it. (Sorry Ro.. nothing personal.) I think Barb is just being childish and hateful. Star told the truth, nothing else, if Barb didnt think she was doing something deceitful then why is she upset Star told everyone?

63. I'm not a fan of Star Jones, but I really admire the way she handled this situation. Barbara Walters is nothing but a lying, deceiving old bitch. Does she really think Star is the one who left with no dignity? BW's heartless and blatantly obvious slap in Star's face will leave nothing but a ugly blemish on this show - and it won't be something that Rosie can make better.

Bravo to Star Jones for leaving on her terms.

64. As much as I dont really care for Starr, I think it is a disgrace how she has been treated by Barbara Walters, I understand how she wanted to get back at the View and Barb. Its too much drama and I wont be watching the show any longer.

65. Speaking of poster children --- Elizabeth is the poster child for the out of touch, privaledged Republican child. She basically went from conservative mommy & daddy to rich football playing hubby. I mean what is her qualification for being there? Her style show? Did anyone even see that travesty? Her "survivor" stint? She lost btw. She's a racist airhead.

66. The View will never be the same without Star Jones. Rosie will add NOTHING to the show. I would rather watch Jerry Springer than watch the view with Rosie and Elisabeth at the same table. Elisabeth is a pure airhead, she needs to be more open minded.

67. I'm not a fan of the VIEW, but I do think the way Star was fired was TACKY. I know what it's like working with the same people for 9 years and then being let go, it hurts. But, she and the VIEW will move on and I hope grow from the experience. I wish them the best, but you reep what you sow and that goes for all of us.

68. Star reminded me of Oprah..... intelligent and educated speaking one sentence, then the tone changes to that southern sounding sentence that begins with, "Girlfriend.." with the waving of the hand. I am not sure that either of them want to be, to tell you the truth.

I will watch more frequently now.

70. I am really upset about Rosie joining the show, and I refuse to watch her. She is rude and outspoken. I think that Joy and Elisabeth are going to be head to head with Rosie. I could honestly care less about Rosies sexuality, its her attitude that bothers me. Im not saying that Stars my favorite, but I think the show is def. heading the wrong direction without her- and Rosie added. They def lost a viewer or two by making her part of the show. I also think its wrong that everyone hates her because of her extravagant wedding. Who freaking cares- your wedding is suppossed to be your day and your day only. Its suppossed to be about the bride and what she wants- jez people- why didnt anyone complain about the wedding of Princess Diana- a princess from another country whos wedding was broadcasted on US television for 24 hrs a day. Give the whole wedding thing a rest- she wanted an extravagant wedding and just because we cant afford it, or thats not our style I think it is so tacky to keep bringing it up- get over it!

71. I WILL NEVER WATCH "THE VIEW" AS LONG AS ROSIE IS ON IT. NEVER!!! SHE IS MEAN, SARCASTIC, AND HAS NOTHING TO ADD TO THE SHOW. I THINK STAR GOT TREATED BADLY BY WALTERS. STAR SHOULD HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO TAKE OVER IN VIERA'S PLACE. SHE IS SMART AND I LIKED HER INPUT. THE WEDDING AND DIET SHE WAS PROUD OF -SO WHAT? I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HER GET A GOOD LEGAL SHOW AND EVEN A SHOW LIKE jUDGE jUDY HAS. GOOD LUCK, STAR. GO FOR IT!!

73. While my opinion of Star Jones was not the best...(I always felt she was very materialistic and superficial), I also don't think very highly of how ABC gave her "the boot". If they hoped she would leave in a dignified manner, as Barabara Walters stated on 7/28, then they should have shown more class in the way they handled her dismissal as well. When you employ someone for almost a decade, I think you owe them a little more respect than what ABC and Barbara Walters have displayed so far.

74. This is SAD. Remember this show began with different types of women with different points of VIEW and that's what made this show good. These women were all respected for having DIFFERENT points of view and each contributed to its success. When I turned on today's show and saw just three ladies, I knew something was wrong. The show was already missing Viera and now the table is really empty without STAR - Those women led led the show. You may have started something that will end this show....

75. I think that Star had EVERY right to announce when and why she was leaving. I think Babs handled it like a b@#. ABC is just mad because Star "out smarted" them --haha. The View is going to end within a year, especially with White Trash, fatso Rosie coming on. Who really wants to watch a wash up??? She's horrible, and tries to force her sexuality on you........Star and Meredith got out at a great time. I won't be watching anymore when Rosie shows up!!!
