Nobody Puts Barbara In a Corner

Barbara Walters & Star JonesStar Jones has left "The View" – permanently, according to her now-former co-host and boss, Barbara Walters. The show aired this morning with just Walters, Joy Behar, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck taking their customary seats at the now oddly empty round table, and Jones' name and picture has been removed from the opening credits.

After the ladies took their seats, Walters began the show, dryly, "And then there were three."

Summoning as much patrician chill as she could, Barbara gave as good as she got: She told the audience that Star wouldn't be coming back, and that though she had purposely given her a few months to find a new gig and had given her the chance to "leave with dignity," her co-host had "made another choice" by talking to People magazine and making "other announcements" in the media yesterday.

Walters also said that she and the producers had decided not to renew Star's contract several months ago (which, she says, Star knew) though she didn't go into the reasons why.

Jones, perhaps to try to take the offensive, appeared earlier this morning before "The View" on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show and said that she wanted to leave when they told her contract wasn't going to be renewed two months ago and that, until yesterday, Joy and Elisabeth didn't even know she had gotten the boot.

Jones told Seacrest that "if anyone should feel betrayed, it should be me," referring to comments Walters made yesterday that she had felt "betrayed" by Star's jumping the gun.  And she complained that she found out about how Rosie O'Donnell – who Star said had been "nasty and insulting and vicious" about her weight loss – was brought onto the show at the Emmy Awards, when Barbara announced it.

Star also acknowledged that she had made some missteps in commercializing her wedding planning to the hilt, saying "I want to take full responsibility for the audience thinking, 'Star abandoned us.'"

76. I think that Star had EVERY right to announce when and why she was leaving. I think Babs handled it like a b@#. ABC is just mad because Star "out smarted" them --haha. The View is going to end within a year, especially with White Trash, fatso Rosie coming on. Who really wants to watch a wash up??? She's horrible, and tries to force her sexuality on you........Star and Meredith got out at a great time. I won't be watching anymore when Rosie shows up!!!

77. Drama! Well, all I know is that in business burning bridges is a very very very bad thing and Star put a big torch to that baby. Next, BW is the big kahuna, upsetting her could conceivably lead to difficulties in Star's next job road. Another, we will never know the reasons why ABC et. al. chose to let go of Star but I seriously doubt it had anything to do with Rosie. Which reminds me, I wonder how many people who consider Rosie a beast etc ... Are really people who never caught a kooshball and are still pissy about it. All in all, next case!

78. Shame on Barbara, by saying anything other than wishing Star well, you showed a great lack of class. Which is, I guess, why you are bringing on Rosie O'Donnell.

79. Barbara you lied when you said Star could stay if she wants & you got caught.
seens like your the one without dignity.
I'm not a fan of Rosie anymore since she came out of the closet & thinks everybody cares.

I will no longer watch the show.

80. Thank God we don't have to hear her unprofessional potty mouth on "The View" anymore. Every other utterance from her had the expression "hootchie mama" in it, a reflection of her lack of class. And since she can't practice law in New York anymore, maybe she'll try to be a star someplace else -- in another galaxy.

81. The show is scrambling to renew itself since it lost Meredith. Good luck. The only two worth anything on that show are Meredith and Joy. Elizabeth is way to opinionated politicly in favor of the Republican white house and should keep her views to herself. As far as losing Star, I really don't care. She is lucky to have lasted 9 years with us having to listen to her gasping to get air. Barbara Walters should thank God everyday that people will sit and listen to her grating voice. It drives me insane. With Meredith gone, we have to put up with her more as she tries to fill the huge void left by Meredith. Now with Rosie coming on, it's really going o be irritating. I think Bill Getty had better start worring about getting a new job.

82. See ya Star!! Star leaving is the best thing for the show. She is rude and arrogant. I watch everyday and over the past few years she has become obnoxious. When someone disagrees with her she never shuts up to let the others say what they think.

Good luck Rosie and Joy you can never leave....You are soooo funny!!!

All the best to The View!

84. Star is scared of Rosie. That's why she left. She knows Rosie wasn't going to take crap from her.
Star, why couln't you have just admitted you had surgery and not have begged gor freebies for your gift bags? How tacky. Look on the bright side. You now have lots of free time to look for a heterosexual husband who wears manly ties!!! Guess you lost more than just weight, you lost your job. Nice going!!! Momma Shirley should be so proud.

88. How in gods name did Barbara WaWa decide to replace a class act like Meredith with a loud mouth, overbearing wannabe like Rosie O'Donnell in the first place. I have only watched the view by accident, but I made it a point to never watch Rosie when she had a regular show . She always reminded me of trailer trash who caught a real break when she got a gig in "Grease", but never had Star quality and never will. I predict the demise of the View.

89. I could never figure out what is so great about a show that had 5 women talking simultaneously. If they don't replace Starr and Meredith it's just possible the remaining 3 hosts might be able to understand what the other 2 are saying.

90. The View has been balanced with Meredith having a journalistic background and Star having legal knowledge. Now we'll have Joy and Rosie competing to crack jokes and Elisabeth giving fashion news and Republican sound bites (unless someone else is also leaving). How is one person going to provide the depth and wisdom that Star and Meredith added to the fluff?

Who is joining The View and when will it be announced? Since they've known for months, Barbara and Bill must have another person lined up for The View roundtable but I can't imagine one person who can fill Star's and Meredith's places.

I find Rosie abrasive and angry; I can't imagine her in a discussion where others get to talk, much less in the role of moderator. She is not funny or interesting. Of course I'll watch this fall to see what happens, but they'll have to be really good to keep me tuning in.
