Let's Get This Party Started: Top Stories for Friday 06/30/06

6/30/2006 9:01 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Star Jones continued her public self-defense tour Thursday night, revealing to Larry King that she was supposed to "make up a story" to tell the audience about her firing – and that her co-hosts on "The View" would just go along it.

In her first television interview since getting booted off "The View," Star said she decided to go ahead with her bombshell announcement a day early because "my viewers, our viewers, deserve the truth and I gave it to them."

And when King showed her clips from the show the day after she quit, full of Barbara Walters' barely concealed venom, Jones claimed that she hadn't seen them before and that she was "sad that the platform that I helped to build was used in a way to attack me professionally." She attempted to take the high road in her spat with Barbara Walters, saying that she would "not denigrate" her former boss, and added that she'd like to see another African-American professional, rather than an actress or comedian, take over her seat at the table. (Walters said on the air that she told Jones that she could say what she wanted to about her contract ending and that her co-hosts would "support her.")

Meanwhile, Star also apologized to her one-time friend Joy Behar through the New York Daily News, saying that she ruined their friendship by not confiding in her about her weight problems. "I can understand why she felt left out. I have to assume she was feeling, 'Why isn't Star, my friend, sharing this stuff with me?'"

Jacko Wacko Like Einstein, Says Lawyer

In the opening statements of the Michael Jackson civil trial yesterday, the lawyer for Jackson's former business partner, porn producer Marc Schaffel, who is suing the singer for nearly $4 million, said that the King of Pop was in dire financial straits in 2003 when the reputation-destroying documentary by Martin Bashir aired.

According to Howard King, the King of Pop had just a few hundred thousand dollars in the bank at the time the show aired, and he owed creditors "hundreds of millions of dollars." Jackson's lawyer, Thomas Mundell, introduced the "crazy old Mr. Jackson" defense, claiming that he was "just as forgetful as the famously forgetful Albert Einstein. Genius comes with eccentricity and quirkiness in other areas."

Hasselhoff Head-Butts Chandelier, Lands in Hospital

Actor-singer David Hasselhoff cut himself while shaving yesterday, but required more than a dab of toilet paper to staunch the bleeding.

According to Lloyd Grove
, the former Baywatch star was having a shave after his morning workout at the Sanderson Hotel in London, and was having trouble navigating his six-foot-four frame around all the fancy Philippe Starck fixtures in the darkly lit men's room, when he biffed his head against a chandelier above the sink. Shards of glass and chrome came cascading down and cut his right arm, severing a tendon, which required emergency surgery. Hasselhoff spent the night in the hospital but should be fine.

Rob Schneider Collapses On Set at Women's Prison

"Deuce Bigalow" star Rob Schneider was taken to the hospital Wednesday after he collapsed during the filming of a movie in Northern California.

The 42-year-old Schneider was filming the comedy "Big Stan" at a women's prison near Stockton, Calif., when he had to be taken to a nearby hospital. "The combination of bad food and the heat just him," said his rep. She added that she didn't know what the bad food was but that he was released from the hospital on Wednesday.

DMX Sent to Jail

Rap star DMX, known to his parents as Earl Simmons, was thrown in the slammer yesterday by a judge who had summoned him to her courtroom after he failed to show last week for a hearing to face speeding and other traffic charges. City Judge Barbara Leak was unsympathetic to DMX's claims of being ill for the last hearing. "We have granted him a number of courtesies. It ends now." DMX was led from the courtroom in handcuffs and held on $25,000 bail. As of yesterday afternoon, he was still being detained.

Lil' Kim To Leave Prison Monday

The rapper Lil' Kim will be finishing her ten-month sentence for lying about a shooting on Monday, just in time for Independence Day. She is getting out two months shy of the year-and-a-day sentence that she was given last year after she lied about a gun battle, saying that she hadn't seen two of her friends at the scene, a claim that was disproven by photos and witnesses. "I am thrilled to be coming home," said Kim in a statement. "I thank all my fans for all their letters."

Rather-Cronkite: Precursor to Barbara-Star?

Though perhaps not as catty as their distaff counterparts, Dan Rather and Walter Cronkite have a minor dust-up of their own going back many years, and as a result, Rather is refusing to be interviewed for a major documentary on his predecessor.

According to this morning's Page Six, Rather won't participate in a PBS "American Masters" profile of Cronkite, whom he succeeded in the CBS Evening News anchor chair, because he's still sulking over the way he was shown the door at the Tiffany Network. Plus, it can't help that his replacement as anchor, Katie Couric, is doing the narration for the 90-minute documentary, which airs July 26.

The blood has been pretty bad between the two newsmen over the years: Cronkite revealed in his 1997 memoir "A Reporter's Life" that Rather threatened to leave CBS unless Cronkite retired from the anchor job before his 65th birthday. "And once Rather had the job, he never let Cronkite on the air again," says a source. "Walter has never forgiven Rather for his brutal tactics."

A who's who of TV newspeople did agree to be on the PBS show, including Tom Brokaw, Mike Wallace, and Robert MacNeil.

So I see the Star Pity tour has started. How many places will she go to today for interviews to get "her story out" Ummmm, after your People Interview, Steve Harvey, Ryan Seacrest and now Larry King. Your story is already out. I think she may be loving the attention now because face it her name has never been in the news like it is now

I personally don't understand why people are mad at Barbara Walters all she did was be a friend and tell Star she could leave on her own conditions (as too not embaress her, as well as keep her there months after the network wanted her out the door). Star chose to tell the truth which is great but it was the way she did it that obviously made Barbara mad. If Star felt so betrayed and she wanted to take the high road then why did she blindside her co-workers, what would have been so hard to say I feel like today is the day to say something and oh yeah I gave an interview to people magazine. I have no pity for Star, I feel she went about it this way to get more publicity and pity. I pray that she does not get her own show, then she won't be able to humiliate herself.

Way to go ABC for getting rid of the self-obssesed narrow-minded annoying part of the view...now I can watch it for more then 2 mins at a time.

I think it's funny how ABC knew that she was going to be leaving and that they didn't think the truth would come out in the end. I'm sure it had to be hard for Star to come to work and ACT like everything was okay and not mention a word to anyone. When Star gave her speech to the viewers, Barbara was pretending to be suprised and so loving to Star. What a joke. I think Star handled it with class having to hold her hand at the table and then when Barbara had everyone stand up from their chairs in Stars honor. Pleease.... What a nasty woman Barbara is. I think when Barbara is on the show, it's boring. Barbara is always plugging a special that she is doing or where she is going or has been. Whenever Barbara fiiled in for the other co-hosts were usually the days I wouldn't watch the whole show. The other women would be on their best behavior as if Grandma were there and when Barbara spoke a few weeks ago that she washes her underwear by hand each night. That is disgusting. I wouldn't tell anyone that , let alone on TV. Did we really need to know about her underpants? Star that day told her to wash them in all delicate mesh bag and put them in the washer. I'm sure that Barbara after all these years knows how to do laundry???? Maybe she should have a segment on the show for her on how to load a washing machine??? Star will be just fine and relieved after all this blows over and she will come out looking like the rose that she is...............

First of all, name one employer who provides lifetime employment? ABC did not want to renew her contract. That is their choice. Life sucks but people get fired everyday.

Secondly, I don't think it was a good idea to diss Barbara Walters. You don't burn a bridge. I have the feeling that will bite Star in the butt one day!!!

Just CAN the whole show!! What do you all mean??? Barbara "lost a fan"?? Since when did she have fans??

Star is a fool for doing this ....who will want to hire and work with her now? Knowing that their reputation will be on the line if they fire her or do now renew her contract.

Boo hoo get another job like every other American who has been laid off or fired STAR!

There's war, killings, terrorism, starvation....who cares if your contract wasn't renewed! Stop taking up unnecessary air time!!!

The view is going down like a burning flame! When Veira left I felt the tide changing, especially after they announced Rosie as taking her place. YUCK! I cant stand that woman! Anyways, Star, keep the faith, you are the best!

It's not clear to me who told Star Jones Reynolds' agent of Star's firing. Brian Frons? Bill Geddie or Barbara Walters?

It's also unclear as to why Barbara Walters felt the necessity of reading a prepared statement when she supposedly leveled with the viewers.

And if Star's wedding plugs were not quid pro quo (otherwise undisclosed) promotional consideration, for what is she now apologizing with respect to her conduct on the wedding-themed segments of The View?

I don't see how anyone can form an informed opinion about who is most culpable re: what all of the parties seem to have acknowledged as backstage duplicity without knowing the answers to these questions.

I saw Star on Larry King last night and the Today Show this morning and I like her even more than I did before. She is a class act and one thing's for sure -- SHE'S SMART. Like her or not, she's taking the high road. ABC Execs, including Barbara & Bill (Geddie) look like the buffoons that run Enron, Tyco and likes -- trying to cover their sorry, manipulative asses. Releasing documents and trying to malign Star's character after it's been revealed to the world that they are liars, is so inappropriate. Star never denied that she had "medical intervention". It's the trashy tabloids like the Enquirer, US Weekly, the Star and In Touch that create and circulate malicious lies that some of their readers take as truth and spin it from there. Why all the personal attacks on Star? Undoubtedly from the ignorant people in this world that have nothing better to do except be jealous, covetuous, petty and envious because their lives suck and they don't do anything about it.

Hell, Barbara Walters has had several facelifts...we all know it...just look at pictures of her from 10 years ago....SO WHAT??? If she likes it, we should be happy for her. It obviously made her feel better about herself.

One thing's for sure -- Star is extremely intelligent, good-looking, fit and healthy, has a husband that loves every inch of her and will be inundated with new job possibilites whether it's on t.v. or not. Clean up your own back yards -- if we were more concerned with ourselves, this ridiculous media spectacle would not take on the epic proportion it has.

And those of you with children -- I hate to think how they act if you are the role models that they have. The name calling and disparaging remarks about someone you don't "personally" know, even if she is somewhat of a celebrity is insane. People that have self-esteem, are happy with their lives and know this don't have the time or desire to tear down another human being.

Star Jones is my hero!!! I hope I grow up to be just like her. YEAH RIGHT...she makes me want to vomit. She is the most repulsive species I've ever seen or heard. Maybe it's the way she spends all of her time, money and effort in completely meaningless and selfish ways. My question is...why did the View hire this creature in the first place?

So what she didn't have her contract renewed.

Star is trying to create and keep some buzz going affiliated with her name. There was a reason she did not last on the red carpet and there is a reason her contract was not renewed.

It is funny that people are saying that all of a sudden now they have respect for her. This is the same Star. She is going around from news outlet to news outlet to present her "side" and cast herself in the most positive of light.

She hasn't been a joy to work with in a long time. Even members of her family will tell you that

Not renewing a contract to me says Good Riddance, We no longer want or need your services. That means, as Donald Trump would say, "You're fired". It's called telling it like it is.

I'm not a huge Star Jones fan, but I have to hand it to her......she is spinning this story in the right direction......HER direction! She has remained professional during this entire ordeal. Barbara Walters has REALLY taken the LOW road on this one!!! SHAME ON YOU BABS!!
Now we have Rosie on the show......Eeeeek, speaking of her...... I have a feeling that Star Jones is the only person that is going to come out of this story..........Smelling Rosie! Everyone else, so far, is acting like school children!! Thank God Meridith got out when she did!
