Awards Shows
What Were They Watching!?!?

Today's Emmy nominations announcement was supposed to mark a turning point in Emmy history. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences revised the nomination process to ensure, in part, that some new faces got nods. Did they succeed? There certainly a was a lot of turnover this year, but the new nominees still leave a lot to be desired.

The list of those that didn't get recognized is surprising, for both good and bad reasons. Here are the five things that stood out most to us:

Forget last year...
"Lost," James Spader, Felicity Huffman and Patricia Arquette were all major winners last year - and not nominated this year. Kiefer Sutherland is the only lead actor nominated from last year in the drama category. Tony Shalhoub is the only lead actor nominated from last year in the comedy category.

What happened to the "Housewives"?
The show itself did not deserve to get nominated this year (it doesn't belong in the comedy category, but that's a whole other story). But to not nominate Marcia Cross (the best woman on TV, period) and instead recognize Alfre Woodard is a head-scratcher. Her entire storyline was never done properly and she never fit in with the show. She's a great actress, just not on this show.

"Deadwood" + "The Shield" + "Veronica Mars" + "Big Love" = ???
No major nominations. No Ian McShane (a f**king crime!!!), no Forrest Whitaker (are you kidding!?), no Kristen Bell and no Chloe Sevigny. No respect.

A few bright spots
Denis Leary ("Rescue Me") deserved his actor nod, same for Gregory Itzin and Jean Smart ("24"). "Scrubs" got its second straight nod and "The West Wing" had a great final season. "Splinter Cell" was great (though it has no chance going up against "Into the West") and Steve Carell is certainly as funny as it gets.

Best storylines
Can "The West Wing" pull off one last Emmy win? And what about Allison Janney, Sean Hayes, Megan Mullally and "Arrested Development"? Will "The Sopranos" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" win despite sub-par seasons? Oh, and no James Gandolfini or Edie Falco?

Sorry, one last rant ...
When in the world will the supporting cast of "Scrubs" get nominated? How about "The Shield"? Or "Deadwood"? Or "Rescue Me"? Or Lauren Graham? Or "The Wire" and Michael K. Williams (Omar)? Or Jennifer Love Hewitt? Ok, just kidding.

1. I think the people who choose the nominees are racist. What about Everybody Hates Chirs that is a great show and doesnt get recognized for anything! Is the only way for an African American to get recognized is by BET giving out awards its a shame that Hollywood doesnt realize what a changing culture and country we live in.... And I agreee that Lauren Graham and kristin Bell should have been nominated and there should be a rule that if your show gets canceled (umm Geena Davis) you should not get to be nominated there is a reason the show got canceled in the first place!

2. Quite true. Spader is every bit as good as Shatner & they both deserved nods. And no Falco or Galdolfini? I agree that Alfre Woodard is great, but that whole story line they gave her was a waste and a lousy story at that.

3. Shatner deserves nod as much as Spader- both do. And the entire Alfree Woodard script sucked, and her talent was wasted. She had one expression the entire show, which was doing the best with what they gave her. As you said, it's the show, not her.

4. What about the freaking Gilmore Girls. Some of the best writing and acting has been on that show and for years...nothing. Lost is still one of the best and original shows on tv and yet nothing... who votes? Alfre Woodard? That whole storyline was a waste of time and is one o the reasons I started watching Law and Order again. Uuuurrghhhh

5. What the hell happened to House??? That is by far one of, if not THE, best shows on television. Hugh Laurie is pure pure genius...

7. I agree! House is, without a doubt, one of the best shows on television. It has a remarkable cast, actual plots, and also teaches you something. I can not believe that Hugh Laurie wasn't nominated. Hopefully next year, when more people recognize how wonderful that show truly is.

8. Naveen Andrews and Matthew Fox not nominated? How much more Bias can the Academy get? Lost will go down in History as one of the greatest shows EVER created, possibly the Greatest, The Academy are exactly like our Goverment, Opposite to everything the People want.

What a crock

11. I think shows that are cancelled should not be nominated. The show that are top
rated should get nominated. Why do people watch these shows? Because of good acting and story lines. Are you people crazy? How sad.

12. i think that NATAS (national academy of television arts and sciences) f**ked it up this year, i think that it's wonderful that they intended to give a chance to some new faces but NOT REPLACING SOME MUST NOMINEES by LESS TALENTED PEOPLE (with the exception of Lisa Kudrow, she is great!)... Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Nicolette Sheridan, Eva Longoria and Felicity Huffman deserve a nod and of course an apologize from NATAS... i like the fact that Six Feet Under came back this year but not that Lost was left aside. I've been watching the Emmy's (and attended the last 5 years) every single year but I think that this year i'll change the channel to something more interesting and only watch the part when Lisa kudrow wins...

13. It's is a crying shame that Hugh Laurie wasn't nominated - House is one of the best shows in a long, long time. I caught a few episodes of Big Love while on vacation and I would agree that it too deserves a nomination!

14. I was looking forward to the noms, thinking some overlooked actors (um, Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop!) would FINALLY get some well earned recognition. Instead these are the worst Emmy nominations in recent history. Kevin James (King of Queens) gets nominated by not Jason "My Name Is Earl" Lee?

Seriously??

15. Gilmore Girls, yet again being ignored! What does Lauren Graham have to do to get at least a nomination, not to mention a win! i had some hope hearing that the Emmys were changing their voting process but i can see it's still the same ole' sh**t!
