Awards Shows
What Were They Watching!?!?

Today's Emmy nominations announcement was supposed to mark a turning point in Emmy history. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences revised the nomination process to ensure, in part, that some new faces got nods. Did they succeed? There certainly a was a lot of turnover this year, but the new nominees still leave a lot to be desired.

The list of those that didn't get recognized is surprising, for both good and bad reasons. Here are the five things that stood out most to us:

Forget last year...
"Lost," James Spader, Felicity Huffman and Patricia Arquette were all major winners last year - and not nominated this year. Kiefer Sutherland is the only lead actor nominated from last year in the drama category. Tony Shalhoub is the only lead actor nominated from last year in the comedy category.

What happened to the "Housewives"?
The show itself did not deserve to get nominated this year (it doesn't belong in the comedy category, but that's a whole other story). But to not nominate Marcia Cross (the best woman on TV, period) and instead recognize Alfre Woodard is a head-scratcher. Her entire storyline was never done properly and she never fit in with the show. She's a great actress, just not on this show.

"Deadwood" + "The Shield" + "Veronica Mars" + "Big Love" = ???
No major nominations. No Ian McShane (a f**king crime!!!), no Forrest Whitaker (are you kidding!?), no Kristen Bell and no Chloe Sevigny. No respect.

A few bright spots
Denis Leary ("Rescue Me") deserved his actor nod, same for Gregory Itzin and Jean Smart ("24"). "Scrubs" got its second straight nod and "The West Wing" had a great final season. "Splinter Cell" was great (though it has no chance going up against "Into the West") and Steve Carell is certainly as funny as it gets.

Best storylines
Can "The West Wing" pull off one last Emmy win? And what about Allison Janney, Sean Hayes, Megan Mullally and "Arrested Development"? Will "The Sopranos" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" win despite sub-par seasons? Oh, and no James Gandolfini or Edie Falco?

Sorry, one last rant ...
When in the world will the supporting cast of "Scrubs" get nominated? How about "The Shield"? Or "Deadwood"? Or "Rescue Me"? Or Lauren Graham? Or "The Wire" and Michael K. Williams (Omar)? Or Jennifer Love Hewitt? Ok, just kidding.

33. just because a show was cancelled doesn't mean the acting wasn't emmy nominated. It's sop obvious you people are sitting at home in bumfuck Idaho and know nothing about entertainment. Try working on one of these shows (and I worked on 3 that got nods) and then you will see why these people and shows are nominated-it's not just because you liked them.

34. Hugh Laurie memorizes enormous amounts of dialogue, and House is one of the best shows on TV. For him to NOT be nominated is a travesty.

35. Santiago,

NATAS has nothing to do with the Primetime Emmys, dumb ass. Plus, the voting consists of over 12,000 members of ATAS. I don't agree with all the nominees, but get your facts straight before you make a comment like that, especially if you are going to try and act like you know what you are talking about with your "i've attended for 5 years" comment. I'm sure you were sitting up in the nosebleed seats that the public can buy anyway.

(cause certain people are jealous like kids in school remember everyone cant play with my ball if i dont win senario)People on the judging panel need to remember it is US that watch the shows not them and to think LOST was not nominated and Matthew Fox bad enough he didnt win last year but not even a Nom. Who watches House and the rest of the garbage that was nominated and please people that are off the air should NEVER be considered. I DO NOT PLAN ON WATCHING and I hope they on ABC run a LOST blooper special or marathon that night bet they win the ratings that night! Keep the faith Matt and company you will be back

39. First of all Hugh Laurie is amazing and definitely should be nominated!!

Secondly, I'm really happy that Arrested Development is nominated and that Will Arnett is up for best supporting Actir for the role of GOB. FOX is ridiculously stupid for cancelling this show!

40. I was stunned that Hugh Laurie wasn't nominated. The guy is nothing short of brilliant on House. Martin Sheen shouldn't have been nominated for a lead role. He wasn't even on the whole season of The West Wing. And they also nominated him for that horrible show Two and a Half Men. Did his publicist send a nice muffin basket to the Emmy voters or something? SOMEONE was kissing some serious ass.

All the nominations are just whacked. The Emmy voters must have been smoking some serious high-grade weed or something.

41. For me The Shield was not only the best show on TV this year that I saw, it was one of the best I have ever seen. The last episode was one I will never forget. F***ing haunting, watching Shane throw that grenade.

And the fact Whitaker didn't get nominated makes the whole thing a joke. He was absolutely amazing.

42. Jean Smart's acting on 24 is outstanding and really shows her range as a
super talented actress. She can go from the seriously dramatic role as
the presidents wife --to the seriously outrageous Lana on Fraiser, I really
enjoy her expertise.

43. If the nominations were based on giving new faces or shows a chance then they should create a 'Best Newcomer' award without taking away the kudos for the shows and actors that really deserve the recognition! The only thing the academy got right was '24' . Hope it sweeps. 'Lost' & 'House' should have been there. This is going to be a really boring Emmy's show which I plan on missing.

44. Whatever happened to Ronald D. Moore's reimagined Battlestar: Galactica?

Other than "24" it is the only show truly deserving of an Emmy nomination for Best Drama! And what about the stellar performances of former Oscar winners Edward James Olmos as Admiral William Adama and Mary McDonnell as President Laura Roslin?

For supposedly being "open-minded Libs" these people are certainly close-minded about what constitutes as good shows. It's time everyone get over their Science Fiction-phobia! Christ, other than Drama and Comedy it is the oldest genre out there. They have Best Reality TV Show, not even a best SCI FI category! How archaic and close-minded must the Emmys be????

45. I agree with #1, everybody hates chris is great, sort of a black wonder years.
I don't keep up with awards crap, but I'm surprised they got nothing.
