EXCLUSIVE: Super ($200 Million) Man or Else?

From Claude Brodesser-Akner's City of Industry blog

Will Hollywood blockbuster budgets continue to fly "up, up and away?" Not necessarily.

At least, not at Warner Bros. Pictures. After a $225 million "Pirates of the Caribbean" sailed into port, taking the wind out of "Superman Returns'" $205 million Spandex, Warner Bros. executives are said to be circumspect as to whether the Man of Steel will fly again.

Talent agency insiders with ties to the film tell TMZ that Warner Bros. Pictures president and COO Alan Horn has informed agents that a sequel hinges on whether grosses of "Superman Returns" can crest the $200 million mark domestically. What's more, the studio plans to shave millions - many millions - off any "Superman" sequel's budget. (Amusingly, in the current "Superman Returns," Lois Lane pleads with Lex Luthor, "But millions will die! " It turns out she was right on the money.)

As Variety's box office guru Ben Fritz noted last July 4th, "Superman Returns is off to a strong start, albeit not as fast as a speeding bullet. Warner Bros. superhero tent pole grossed a solid $52.5 million on its opening weekend and $74 million over the five-day Fourth of July frame. Since its Wednesday opening, the Bryan Singer-helmed franchise restart has taken in $106 million."

Talent agency insiders, speaking on the condition of anonymity, insist that Horn is so concerned about being burned financially by ionospheric "Superman" special effects costs that any sequel's budget would cost far less than Bryan Singer's quarter billion dollar baby: a meager $150 million. That's a whopping $35 million less than its predecessor was green lit at, and roughly $55 million less than "Superman Returns" alleged final negative cost. So much for a getting a raise.

However, no one could blame Horn for being cautious. Despite opening at No. 1 in all its territories, overseas, the Man of Steel is starting to look just a bit rusty. The just-ended World Cup meant that Warner Bros. took a pass on European and Latin American territories, and its second weekend in release overseas, "Superman Returns" dipped 55% to take in $9 million from 1,800 prints in 14 markets.

We're bracing to hear how director Bryan Singer will react to this newfound fiscal restraint.

Our guess: Not well.

Says one executive involved in the production and financing of "Superman Returns," "They can try and spin it as 'There are certain economies of scale that come from the making of the first one, blah blah blah. But the reality is, it's harder to play in a smaller sandbox and still push the envelope."

Calls place to Horn were not returned, and a studio spokeswoman declined to comment on the fiscal retrenchment.

46. I though t this movie was horribly boring. I was looking at my watch the entire time. There wasn't enough action. The comment about it being a 2 hour soap opera was right. Lex's plan was incredibly stupid. They could have done so much more with this movie. I thought it sucked and the only reason it's making money is because of the buzz. All of my friends that saw it hated it.

47. I enjoyed the movie after I woke up. The first 30 minutes put me to sleep. Not near enough action for what SHOULD be an action movie! Lois was too bitchy, but I enjoyed the side story that Superman may have a child with her. Too bad the story was written to besmirch Superman's character, which is SUPPOSED to be above shame and dishonor. That the story was written to make us think Superman ran out on Lois while she was pregnant with his child goes against everything Superman stands for! It ruined the movie!!! Why couldn't they have shown them getting married to make the movie much happier??? There's enough gloom and doom in today's news, why would someone want to PAY to watch it in a theater??? I liked the action starting about the midpoint of the movie (after my wife jabbed me in the ribs to stop snoring), but some of the plot was a real stinker and didn't do right by the Man of Steel. Ditch the writer for the sequel, if there is one. Let Lois divorce her husband and marry Superman. And get a new happier Lois who smiles from time to time for Christ's sake!!! Or at least teach this one how to!

48. I think Pirates of the Carribean 2 was and is overrated. Its not only too long but its cheesy the only good thing about it is Johnny Depp. Superman Returns is probably the most underrated movie possibly of all time if it keeps getting negative reviews only because of the box office draw in. It really frustrates me how now a days overrated movies (Pirates of Carribean,Spiderman movies) are making a killing at the box office when an actual good, heart warming, great acting movies arent appreciated.

49. You know I had a conversation with Dan Harris a good year ago when they first started production on this turkey, and I told him that they were making a major mistake, and that the movie would bomb!
I guess I was right afterall... Bryan Singer, Michael Dougherty, and Dan Harris
are all hacks, and they dont know what the hell they are doing when doing a movie like this! This is why this movie failed... This, and they hired the wrong cast starting with a terrible casting job with Brandon Routh who simply is NOT Superman... The guy can't act to save his life!
Well I guess since this wont cross 180million domestically we wont get a real Superman movie for a few more years until the WB does the right thing, and expands Smallville to the big screen! Or just does a total re-start with a whole new cast... I think the Smallville route is the right way to go cause Welling is this Generations Superman, and that would be a major blockbuster putting him in the suit for the first time on the big screen... Anyway the WB dropped the ball on this movie by letting a bunch hacks run the show.
Now please get someone who knows what he's doing in there...

50. Pirates was much better than Superman Returns and considering 1)The lack of promotion and 2) The fact that the film was mediocre at best, its not so surprising that SR is getting owned at the box office. It'll hit the 200 million mark undoubtedly, but they will need to make a much better sequel (with less money more than likely) to keep this franchise afloat. I'm interested in what direction Singer wants to take this series with the characters he's introduced (like the kid), but if he cant work with a smaller budget then get someone else. I have a lot of respect for him as a filmmaker (X2 was brilliant) but he missed the mark with Superman.

51. The reason why Superman Returns isn't doing very good, is cause it's retelling of the Superman origin. Superman Returns could be viewed as poking fun at Reeve's Superman, since the actor who plays superman looks a tad bit like Reeve. When it should of been a continuation of where Christopher Reeve's Superman left off. I very much doubt that Superman fans were looking for a chic flix movie, when Superman had been for the whole family to enjoy. Lost In Space movie did the same mistake. When fans were actually looking for the Robinson family to finally make it to Alpha Centauri. Christopher Reeve has been so long imbedded in memories of Superman movies that trying to do a remake to cover up his presence as a favorite Superman is just taboo. There are some movies that are timeless masterpieces, that it's a mistake to try and do a remake on them. Cause they turn out to be not better than the one before.

53. The problem is that Bryan Singer isn't a comic book fan (he said so himself), yet he's making movies based off of comic book characters. He's watched the movies and 50's tv show and that's it. Superman has evolved as a character since the 70s. Just as no one today would make a Batman movie based on Adam West's version, Superman can't be soley based on a version popular over 20 years ago. Note I said "soley". You need have the traditonal joy and sense of justice and good will that the older Superman radiated and is popular with fans today, but you still have to adapt the man to the times we're living in. You don't need to have updated costumes like X-Men, but you do need a more threatening villain for our more troubled times than what we got here. Until Luthor mentioned that the land crystal would probably kill people, did anyone care what he was doing? "I shall destroy the United States and replace it with prime beachfront property! Muhahahahhaha!" These guys acted like it was still 1978, only they added cell phones and the internet. People don't have the luxery of watching and waiting for 2 hours wondering when Superman and Lois are finally going to hold hands.
"Superman Returns" was basically Singer watching Reeves and deciding "How can I remake this movie without people realizing it's a remake." It's obvious since Brandon's lines as Supes were the same as the originals. He was playing Christopher Reeves, not Superman. Lois was a dull single mom who didn't seem to care about her job OR her family. Perhaps this was done intentionally, with Singer hoping to get the audience to just wish Lois would dump her dreary family and wisk off back to Fortress of Solitude for a weekend with Superman (again). And Luthor was a pale imitation compared to Hackman or Luthor from the animated series. This entire movie was a soap opera with a cape.
Bryan should be in charge of special effects and that's it, since that's all he ever seems to give in his X-Men movies and now it's the same with Superman. To write and/or direct it, bring in Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Jeph Loeb, anyone who's ever written great scripts for comics and/or the animated series(es) and will pour their heart and soul into the project to make it as it should be.

54. I was never convinced of Lex Luther's evilness. I mean, we've got Kevin Spacey and no one's even taking advantage it! And I agree, what was up with his cheesy plan? Plus, there was no action. The plane scene and then that's it. Just a bunch of rock, lot of hunk and very ittle spunk! BUT, I would like a second one. Maybe they'll learn from all of our comments.

55. I'm sorry to say this folks, but I am 29 and just had a kid. I don't want to think that she may never get to see the man of steel on the big screen. We have the technology to make Superman do all the great things that the original Superman couldn't do. The task was to find a person that could perhaps fill-in for Christopher Reeves, never replace him. The fact that Brian Singer knew this was the only thing I liked about him. However, he sucks as a director. I hated all of the X-Mens, although they had pretty cool special effects. What comes to mind is Nightcrawler in the second X-Men and the bridge scene with Magneto in the third one. Whatever happens to Gambit? Anyway, going back to Superman Returns, if you had to pick someone to play Superman on the big screen, I can't think of anyone else to play him then Brandon Routh. Leave Tom Welling for the silver screen. I also want to add that the script was absolutely terrible. The movie was a chick flick, not a comic book superhero movie like it was suppose to be. Smallville had a better script than this movie. However, I hope Superman does break the $200 Million Dollar mark. I want to see the man of steel do amazing great things on the big screen.

56. No big surprise!!!!
They hinted at the fact that he is homosexual and that killed the whole thing. Hollywood never ceases to amaze me. They are the dumbest organization of people that have ever existed.

57. I'm not really a Superman fan and I thought this was an excellent MOVIE!! I'm not concerned about politics (don't even know why that would be a factor), I thought the kid was a nice, humanizing touch, and the special effects were absolutely dazzling.
I agree with the notion that this movie was not made for fanboys, and that they're the ones killing this movie. Also, there are those who are bitter with Singer for leaving X-Men and I'm sure they're delighting at the idea that this movie is off to a slow start. But it will make it's money back and I'm certain there will be sequels.

It's okay that the first movie was quiet. After all, the first Superman didn't have Superman punching people in the face or splitting them in half with heat vision; it was pretty action-lite. The sequel provided more action and if SR 2 is green-lit, I'm sure action will be a priority.

58. Superman was a superflop. What little excitement there was is already shown in the previews. It was a two and a half hour Sleepless in Seattle in disguise. It didn't have to be this way. I get that there is a love story to be told, but it should've been handled like Spiderman. A little love story, and then some action. A little more love story, then a lot more action. You can't bore me for 45 mins, then give me 5 mins of Superman being Superman and then back to another 45 mins of crap. Mix it up and keep it interesting or don't bother.

59. When WB made Batman Begins they re-invented Batman. They gave him a formidable enemy and did the whole movie in an adult, mature way and gave us what we wanted to see from Batman. Well, this was Superman, the Man of Steel. We wanted and expected to see awsome things, to be blown away by what he could do and a great story. We wanted to see him fight an enemy that was worth being put in the ring with Superman. Kevin Spacy was ok as Lex but who cares about seeing Superman having to fight off a mere earthling? Seeing Superman matched against Lex was like being bothered by an anoying mosquito. The movie had a lot of great effects but over all the effect of the movie was just kind of ...blah. Superman was gone for 5 years, why was Lex the only villain around, where were all the other bad guys and super villains that would have taken over with Superman gone?
The movie going public has grown up and matured. We have been spoiled by movies like The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Batman Returns, etc. We expected more, after all..he's...Superman.

60. I'm a little unsure as to how the "homosexual" angle killed this film- after all X2 was more blatant in its use of such gems as "fathers carrying the mutant chromosome" and "cant you try not being a mutant"? It did pretty well Stateside...

I think that any Superman movie was going to be a hard-sell to a twenty first century audience given how meshed he is with truth, justice, apple pie, and the American way. With the X-Men, you have messages (and members) for all kinds of different minorities and creeds, but for superman, you have 1 big, all powerful caucasian over-earnest superhero male who's going through a bit of a mid-life crisis (maybe reflecting the current political and cultural situation in parts of the States?)

Or, maybe I'm just reading too much into it and any film with this kind of budget would most likely get into hot water- I certainly wouldn't have greenlit this property with this kind of monetary requirement, as it'd almost have to be as big as the second coming to make any real money. But then, a lot of people have a lot of faith in Brian Singer, and it aint over till Brainiac sings...
