"Pirates" Are Superman's Kryptonite

Kate Bosworth: Click to watchWhile promoting their film in Europe, Brandon Routh and the cast of "Superman Returns" have been bombarded with questions about another summer blockbuster, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

With "Pirates" breaking records it's opening weekend and "Superman" fighting to break even, the comparisons came as no surprise and the cast was certainly prepared for the line of questions.

Kate Bosworth, who plays Lois Lane in the flick, laughed off rumors of competition with boyfriend (and "Pirates" star) Orlando Bloom. "It's like the only thing that we talk about. Come home everyday, come home from work and talk about the box office," she joked, "It's so not a part of our consciousness, we are equally supportive of each other."

Of course, if the Man of Steel and Captain Jack Sparrow were to meet face to face, it'd probably be the latter who would make a run for it faster than a speeding bullet ... with a bottle of rum, of course.

18. Ihave to say I both loved the movie and was frustarted by it. Brandon Routh IS definitely Superman, and his portrayal has enough of Reeve's to make you feel nostalgic while adding the right touch of his own. I felt by the end of the movie "This is Superman!"The good news is that it succeeds in bringing back Superman for a new generation.
The frustration is that it left way too many plot points dangling in a lack of true dialogue between Lois andSuperman and Lois and Clark. It just didn't explain some of the very plot that it continues from Superman II.
Overall this is a very good, not a great film.I almost think that the next films will be better now that the character has been reestablished. It's like that needed to happen to move in any kind of new direction, while being true to what came before.
In a way , it had to be different say than with Batman Begins where even the first Batman film is hard to watch today, and that film is not as old as the Reeve Superman films.Even Dick Donner went on record as saying he liked this film as the start os a series.I look forward to an awesome sequel, the sky is truly the limit here.

19. The movie is good. I saw the movie about two weeks ago and I'm still thinking about the movie. I think the reason Superman Returns is fighting to break even is because it needed another foe. As simple as that. If this movie were made 25 years ago it will break all records for sure. But after watch Batman, Spiderman, Fantastic Four the movie look like silly.

But I think that Superman throwing the big rock to the space is part of the plot of the sequel. Remember that the Rock were growing. I expect the do better in the sequel.

That is if Alan Horn greenlights a sequel.

21. tom welling would not have made a good superman for this film. he's been fine on the smallville show, but this show needs to end. it's gone on for too long, and is becoming one of those shows like malcolm in the middle or someting where you go, "why is this still on?" superman returns is fantastic. and brandon routh does a tremendous job!

22. Wow, a lot of these comments are really biased, so I`m just gonna let out my own biased comment. I do not agree with Singer leaving X-Men to direct Superman, and I`m extremely bitter about that, so naturally I was jumping around and cheering when I found out the movie was flopping. I refuse to watch Superman Returns to this day, yet I`ve seen X-men: the last stand 4 times in theatres, and Pirates of the caribbean twice since it came out, and will probably see it more times because it was P-H-E-N-O-M-I-N-A-L no matter what you Superman Returns fans say. Singer made a bad choice, now he`s paying for it.

25. I know I may a minority with my feelings on Superman Returns but....I truly fail to see why everyone liked this movie. It had a story that went nowhere, the cast did nothing in the movie but posture and stare and I felt the so called love story was weak.
I don't know if they just didn't trust Routh's acting abilities but he didn't say anything in this movie, ie, when he finally has the idea that EMP may have something to do with his crystals, he flies back to his fortress, looks at his empty panel, looks pissed and then what....NOTHING! There's nothing else said or done about it. I thought that was bad script writing and cheesy acting.
It seems to me that many of you decided to like this film because you so loved the original or you've been a fan of the comicbook. You filled in whatever was missing from the story to make it good in your mind instead of looking at it for the cinematic garbage that it was.
Knowing that all of you will run out to buy the DVD when it's released makes me wonder how you will feel when you sit down to watch it without the hype.
I think it will quickly become a dust collector in your collection.

26. Ok,The movie(Superman Returns) is not perfect. But to compare it to the crapfest that was X-Men 3? Let's just say that I loved the first 2 X-Men movies and X3 just didn't deliver. A weak plot, misnhandling of Jean Grey, as Phoenix, and the travisty of how they handled Cyclops."Well he's dead , better get on with the movie". This movie had little to do with what came before.
Meanwhile, the Superman movie has brought back the character in classic form, and set up what I believe will be excellent sequels. I would say that it was far more successful than X3.

27. Such a bore fest I expected this movie to be decent not as good as praised this movie had little progression, probley longer than needed. Dragged on alot in the beggining and at the end, the climax was dull, and the conversation was lifeless.

Superman Returns got more than it deserves easily one of the worse superhero movies.
