TMZ Music: MySpace HACKED!

MySpace has been touted as almost a Messiah to the music industry over the past year, allowing people the ability to share their favorite artists with friends, listen to bands they love and discover new bands that they may never have heard before.

Green Tea Monkeys

Green Tea Monkeys, an indie ska/punk/reggae band from Germany, hoped to tap into MySpace's potential to achieve the success of other once no-name bands like Hawthorn Heights, Hollywood Undead and even Jack White's new baby The Raconteurs -- all were able to capitalize on the social networking site in their rise to prominence.

But what they never thought they would have to do is apologize to their entire fan base for unauthorized racist bulletins post under the band's name. "For us as a little band, it's worse when our fans won't believe in us ... to have to show people that we're not talking sh*t and that they can still believe and trust in what we're saying" they say.

Over the past couple of months, a rash of hacking has taken over MySpace, the most popular Web site since, well, the Web. The scale of the hacks has the MySpace community up in arms and is prompting people to ask when MySpace is going to step up.

The hacks are occurring through the bulletin section of each individual's MySpace profile. The extent of the hack is unknown, but as any MySpace user can tell you, in order to post a bulletin -- whether real or counterfeit - you must have access to an individual's account. That suggests that any and all information that a person has stored within their profile, including personal e-mail addresses, passwords, and e-mails, could be accessible to hackers.

Bunner on MySpace.comThe counterfeit bulletins causing the biggest uproar are those containing defamatory racial remarks that would make the grand wizard of the KKK blush. It appears that the three most common racist posts are: "I'm Gonna Kill Y'all Ni**as," "F*ck All Y'all Ni**as!," and "Get Out of America You F*ckin Ni**as!"

Each of these appears in the bulletin section -- with the user's name attached as the author of the bulletin. That means that every single one of the user's "friends" receives this information in connection with the owner of the account, who is listed as the author. Horror stories run rampant about the extent to which people have had to defend their character under these circumstances.

There's no way to measure how long the racist impressions will resonate before users have the ability to apologize and set the record straight. But then should MySpace users have to apologize for something like this in the first place?

I'm not surprised neither am I upset. However, I am extremely dissapointed. As a Myspace user and an African American, I feel that text filters are long overdue. Derogatory or not, comments that are intentionally offensive shouldn't be going through the filters.
I'm not say make Myspace a freakin' baby site, but at least keep it pg-13 rated. For the sake of peoples' feelings. A lot are sensitive to this kind of stuff, and Tom especially should filter and get hacker software that updates...so that he can always be up to par...

Please read THIS WARNING:

To my friends... please pass this on when you are done reading.

There has not been a power outage at MySpace Data Centers (they are avoiding telling us the truth)... but there may indeed be some database problems because MySpace is being Hacked hardcore.

I've been seeing a lot of bulletins supposedly posted by my friends that I KNOW my friends would not send.. and those of you who have had it happen to your account know what I mean.

IF YOU SEE a bulletin from a friend that says "Check out this link" or "Look at this video" anything like that... BE CAREFUL. Your friend might not have sent it. If you click on the link in the bulletin and a page comes up that looks like the MySpace login screen. Don't assume that "Oh crap.. I guess I have to log in again". Look up at the address in the address field at the top of your browser (you know.. where you type them in). If it does not say MySpace.com or bulletin.myspace.com then DO NOT put in your email login and password.

What is happening is this... a hacker has mirrored the MySpace login page by duplicating it in every detail... which means he has Web design skills. Then he/she hosts it on a fake server somewhere... maybe at home... or stealing space from one somewhere else. When you enter in your login and password again.. it is being saved straight to the hacker's database or server. All they have to do is get a few real users (your friends) info... and then it starts a chain reaction.

Many of you use your same email and password info on other sites.. maybe even for online banking.... if you think you have accidentally logged into one of the fake MySpace pages... go change your password everyhwere you use it... !

If you don't believe me.. ask some of your friends that you thought were sending out stupid bulletins with links to porno sites or links to things that weren't even there... and I'll bet they will set you straight.

Also.. here is an article I found today after I got pissed that the site was down again. I Googled "MySpace" and "Hacked" and found this from 12 days ago.

http://www.tmz.com/2006/07/16/myspace-hacked/

also all of you guys out there (and some women), watch out for busty and booty shaking friend requests offering you a chance to see them elsewhere in their habitat as wannabe porn stars, deny the request if in doubt, i got 4 yesterday and am now in a chronic battle with spyware and other such computerised STD's

Please repost this because what your friends don't know may affect you.

Yes, myspace has become ridiculously overpopulated.
There are other smaller sights out there, such as vainspace, bloggspot, goggle blogger..
but the fact is myspace has the largest database with the most people.

If you keep a privet profile, talk to people you know, spread the word about the haking, you should be ok.

There's a lot of blatant ignorance coming from those who belittle MySpace. Sure I think it's a waste of time too, but it is definately a big deal. Some TV producers can only dream of having as many viewers as those that see a bulletin that gets passed on from person to person. Hell, the 2004 presidential election consisted of 121 million votes accross America. MySpace's supposed profile count is at 100 million.. even assuming HALF or slightly less than half are adults, you'll end up with a number relative to the amount of votes John Kerry got.. ha!

But seriously, you have either tens of millions of people that can look at a racial comment and be affected by it, or tens of millions of ignorant young people whose hatred and ignorance can get further amplified by such a hack "stunt."

Anyone who thinks this race thing is not serious is probably bitter at MySpace for something. You always have these "more holy than thou" folk who always seem to be hating something. Maybe they should come out of their emo closet and post black and white pics from uncommon and obscure angles. Don't forget the hairdo either.

>> 129. Ok...look...its not that serious...just someone trynna get attention...but they are too much of a bi*** to come forward so its just that simple

Wanna talk? Lets talk about it even though it's fallen into other people's hands (not mine)

My aim is TheLeonHikari.

If anyone wants to talk about the password stealing program/software/whatever, just message me. I don't use it anymore, but I can certainly talk about it.

Everyone is saying that the power outage was a hoax and that there is really hacker problems...

Well, there may be hacker problems...there always have been and there always will be. The "Power Outage" REALLY WAS a power outage...I was a block from the building that houses the Myspace Servers when the lights went out a few weeks ago in LA. Try being stuck in rush hour traffic for an hour to go 4 miles due to a power outage...then have people try to convince you that the power outage is just a hoax.

Oh yeah...and myspace was getting hacked and becoming stupid before FoxNews bought it...it will continue to get hacked and be stupid for a long time.

Yea.. Myspace said there was a storm and the servers got hit.. but I do believe it was just the hacking that was wrong. Mine hasn't been hacked.. but the majority of my friends have! Every day there is some bulliten saying "Come check out this girl's pics" or something along those lines. It's so annoying.

I have a private account on Myspace where I must approve all comments and have all bands blocked. However, my account was STILL hacked because I clicked a link in a fake bulletin, which was for my own stupidity...but still terribly annoying to fix. All of this is to say that private accounts do NOT totally protect you.

No one seems to remember exactly how this "hack" supposedly worked. It wasn't a "hack" at all. Being as how I opened one of these bulletins and WASN'T fooled by it. The best way not to be fooled by it is to understand it. So, let me explain how it worked.
You open the bulletin. The minute the page loads a script was activated that forwards you to another page. One that APPEARS to be the myspace "re-login" page. But under closer examination... it isn't. It's basically an account information phish. You could enter ANYTHING into the prompt and all it does is forward you to your actual home page, just like if you really logged in. The so called "hack" is actually a person or program that connects to your account using the information YOU gave to login and repost the bulletin. While logged in, the amount of things that can be done to your page is virtually limitless. I've seen everything from basic malice (deleting everything on someone's page) to code being added that installs malware to anyone who views your page. I know it's asking alot... but people just need to start being more cautious with their accounts. If you are EVER forwarded to a re-login page unintentionally, try clicking the home page link or retyping "myspace.com" into your browser prompt. If you are actually logged on, you'll know that you've avoided being phished.
Also... DO NOT INSTALL ANY CODE ONTO YOUR SITE WITHOUT KNOWING EXACTLY WHAT THEY DO. Doing things like installing trackers (which don't work) or other complicated codes ignorantly leaves you open to your site being manipulation from outside entities.
Lastly, if you see anything suspicious, immediately report it to MySpace. If it's happening to you it's probably happening to alot of other people. But myspace won't take it seriously until they know enough people have been affected to consider it real problem. Enough people reported the false prompt forward to myspace and they reacted by adding a notice to the page that asks people to look at the url before they give their information (since most of those fake forwards have obviously fake urls).
The best way to avoid this kind of thing is to IGNORE certain types of bulletins and just pay attention to what's going on. And, if you believe your login information has been compromised... CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY. Remember, they can't mess with your page if they can't get into it. It's just common sense people.

The hacking happened to me too, though not as bad. For me it was a bulletin or message sent out advertising some adult site. Thank goodness it wasnt anything worse.
