Oprah & Gay Rumors -- Pictures Tell Story

Oprah, Gayle and Stedman

Oprah says she's not gay -- period. Winfrey says she felt compelled to proclaim to the world – in the August issue of O Magazine -- that she and longtime best friend Gayle King are not lovers.

Oprah was clearly looking to put out a fire, but it made us wonder: Where did all the smoke come from? Here's a photo and video timeline that may explain how the gay rumors got fueled.

Between 1987 and 2000, Oprah and Stedman Graham seemed inseparable, appearing at countless events and frequently photographed showing plenty of PDA.

Then, suddenly, Stedman could have ended up on a milk carton -- there are a scant few pictures of the couple after 2000. But as quickly as Stedman faded from the scene, Gayle King emerged, side-by-side, with O.

And there's more.

The two people closest to Oprah in the world are rarely seen together with the talk show queen. TMZ found only a few photos.

And the story doesn't end here. Stedman has talked openly about how he and Oprah lead their own lives.

Indeed, at event after event -- especially after 2000 -- Oprah often showed up solo, sometimes talking about her close relationship with Gayle.

And right back at you, Oprah. At this year's Tony Awards, Gayle gushed about her famous friend.

Gayle, who is divorced with two sons, helps run O Magazine and the pair are inseparable. When they're not together, they talk multiple times every day.

So that's where the smoke came from and why Oprah chose to put out the fire.

16. Really I don't care at all. I find Oprah's insistance in trying to make Gayle into some kind of celeb tiresome. She just isn't interesting eniough to cut it as anything other than Oprah's best friend-----sooooooooo what. That's cool....and like what is Oprah's favorite cereal?????

17. I do no believe that Oprah is gay. I think that when you are as successful as she is, there are very few people that you can trust. And maybe she and Gayle are just best friends. I am glad that she has a friend like that. Speaking from my own experience, good girlfriends are not easy to come by.

19. My best friend was killed in i972 we had been friends since 1954 we talked every day sometimes three or four times I was single when we met and his wife and I are the best of friends still. I am married and have 3 sons. I have never been closer with anyone except for my wife and that is a totally different relationship. There was no sex involved and there were members of his family who were jeauleous of our friendship they just coudnt see how two men could be such friends. We understood each other perfectly and I can only discribe our relationship by saying he is the only person that I could tell anything good or bad and know that it would not change his opinion of me no matter what and the feeling was mutual. Is picture in on my wall and I think of him everyday of my life and miss most the someone wjth whom I could share anything. I feel blessed to have had him in my life.

20. It's just very sad too know that people can hurt people this way i feel that this is just evil trying too hurt a good person for some one who spreads the good energy that she does some people just need too hurt these people and make them feel llike they need too prove who they are it's very sad I'm so disapointed in the media I just think this is too sell magazines and hurt one of the greatest people on the face of this earth and take away her good energy that she reflects on everyone .and distract her from doing good things for needy people. so shame on the one who started it and the one's who followed the first one .

21. Oprah and what she does in the own privacy of her own hpme is strictly her business.People like to run off with rumors and spread what they really don't know like wild fire.People who have major issues in their lives like ludacris and 50 cent enjoy hearing such gossip trash like this.

23. I used to wonder about Oprah , Stedman and the Gayle thing ... she is famous, people just wonder, it is human nature. But in the long run it doesn't really matter does it? And really.... one can have a very close friend without it being any sort of sexual relationship... and if they really are who cares?

25. I'm a huge Clay Aiken fan. We just had to go thru this same BS with some idiot spreading rumors about Clay. And he's always been a target of gay jokes and innuendos just because he's a southern gentlemen who isn't out banging every groupie in sight. Clay refuses to acknowledge this crap. Why should he. Once you talk about it, it will never stop. And for heaven's sake, why should Oprah have to say she's not gay. If you don't comment, people claim you're not defending yourself, so it must be true. If you deny, people claim you're lying anyway. No win situation. It's pathetic aleady. People should leave these good and talented people alone!

26. I'm sorry but I must have my say...Oprah looks soooo much HAPPIER WITH GAYLE than with Stedman! And whether or not they are a gay couple truly does not matter in the long run. All that does matter is that they love one another as friends, and the look & smiles on both their faces in the photos, with one another, tells a very different story than when Oprah is pictured with Stedman. Personally, who would care if Oprah was gay anyway?! I know I wouldn't one bit! It would not take away from all the GOOD SHE HAS DONE in this world, so who cares whether she's heterosexual or homosexual? So long as she continues to CARE and LOVE the people of this world less fortunate than her!

27. Regarding Melissa's comment ( Oprah's power being used for the betterment of Gayle's carreer); now Oprah's pushing to get Gayle to fill a slot on 'The View'. Maybe Gayle is better just where she is--in the background working on Oprah's magazine.
Also I think that the Oprah-Stedman 'is it on or is it off' marriage got SO boring that the lesbian story was only another grabber concocted by the trash papers.

28. It must be a boring week in news !!!!!!! They're picking on Oprah. Here are those reasons : She's an African American. She's a minority. She's also powerful. I like her for all those reasons. TY Oprah, keep doing what you're doing !!!!!!+

29. It is so sad that two people can't be just friendsand thats ok. I have friends that mean a lot to me. and because I am from a country where gay and lesbian behaviour is not accepted. we never see that. people trust each other. woman can have another woman for friend as man can have a man for friend and that's all, it is wo wonderful. but the low living people in this country makes it where everyone is in doubt about relationship. I believe oprah is bold enough to speak the truth. I believe they are just friends.
all you low life leave them alone

30. I am a Gay woman and my best friend is straight... We spend quite a bit of time together, and we are always on the phone with eachother. We have taken vacation together and do family gatherings with her family as well as with mine. She is a very attractive woman, single and successful. People always whisper if we are having an affair. She is like a sister to me, and I have absolutely no interest at all in her other than just a friendship. It has at times put a strain on a really great friendship because she gets a little uncomfortable when people at her job inquire about me. It's really sad that people will create drama where there is none..Obviously, the people who talk are not yet conscious..Time to wake up...And get a life!
