"Project Runway" Winner Goes Fur-Free

Jay McCarrollThe Humane Society has become the exclusive sponsor of "Project Runway" first season winner Jay McCarroll's debut fashion line.

McCarroll, who won Bravo's design competition back in 2005, will premiere his fur-free collection in September at NY's Fashion Week.

While Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez may beg to differ, Jay says "With so many fun and fashionable alternatives, there's no reason to use fur."

Other designers and retailers forgoing the use of animal fur in their collections include Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, H+M and J.Crew.

21. Hooray Jay!!! I don't know why you turned down the prize money - but I'm glad you didn't spend it on fur. I was rooting for you from the start. And now I'm extra happy you won over cheating Kara Saun whose whole final runway for the show was filled with leather and fur. Yuck.

23. Congratulations to Jay and all the compassionate designers who do not need to slaughter animals to satisfy our vanity! For those who "do not care about the fur thing so much" or those who like fur, it is very likely that have never watched animals being skinned alive (yeah, fur doesn't grow on trees...): watch the video at www.furtrim.com and think (and feel) again (warning VERY GRAPHIC images)

24. Ralph Lauren DOES use fur and many different animal pelts. There is a coyote vest with a fur collar in the Fall Collection right now. You can see for yourself on Polo.com

25. the person who opined in number 8's response strikes me as someone who has no real education as to the fur trade. were i to be so talented and educated in the designing of clothes, i wouldn't make clothing with fur either. there's nothing fabulous about using fur that's been collected from animals who have been electrocuted half to death and possibly skinned while still retaining a pulse.

by the way, "15", cattle are often beaten, and they are given steroids, which you eat. i suggest to you to forgo the supermarket and start giving your business to a local butcher. we do. it's not so expensive.

i'm sickened by the fact that most of the posters above me seem to have no ability to think for themselves or go outside of the local safeway for food.

26. Salem, I just read that Ralph Lauren agreed to go fur-free next season, so they WOULD still have fur for sale now.
