EXCLUSIVE: Gibson Skated Twice Before

7/31/2006 2:06 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned that Mel Gibson has been stopped for reckless driving two other times in Malibu but he was allowed to leave without a ticket or arrest.

As TMZ first reported, Gibson was arrested on Friday for suspicion of driving under the influence on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu -- driving 87 miles an hour. As we reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered to sanitize his arrest report to make it appear that Gibson's arrest was "without incident." In fact, The report states Gibson was abusive, violent and vulgar, and even attempted to escape.

TMZ has confirmed that approximately three years ago, Gibson was driving 74 miles per hour on Pacific Coast Highway, one mile from his house, when he was pulled over by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy. Sources say Gibson avoided eye contact with the deputy during the stop and even though the deputy was suspicious of Gibson's sobriety, he let him go.

Approximately one year ago Gibson was stopped again, after driving 64 miles an hour on Pacific Coast Highway -- where the speed limit is 45. Sources say that Gibson was so cocky that he was on his cell phone the entire time he was detained by the deputy. Ultimately, the deputy decided to let him go without giving him a citation.

And there's new information about Friday's arrest.

As TMZ reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered by superiors to re-write his report and eliminate all references to Gibson's bad conduct and anti-Semitic remarks. Sources tell TMZ that Lt. Crystal Miranda told the arresting deputy that Captain Tom Martin talked to Sheriff Lee Baca who expressed concern that the explosive report might leak to the media and that it needed to be re-written in a sanitized form.

Sources say Gibson, who was pulled over early Friday morning for allegedly crossing lanes at a high speed, told the arresting deputy that he was leaving home just after 2 a.m. and heading to his brother's house. The arresting deputy found a bottle of tequila in the car, 3/4 full, in a brown paper bag. We're told that Gibson told the deputy that the bottle wasn't his but, "I've had a little bit."

We're also told that Gibson, who issued a statement over the weekend, suggesting he was not of sound mind when he uttered the anti-Semitic tirade and engaged in abusive behavior, was not in fact "out of it." Sources connected with the case tell TMZ that Gibson was drunk but was in control of his senses. At one point at the Sheriff's station, sources say Gibson was "jumping like a monkey" on a steel cage and told the arresting deputy, "I'm not going to hurt you physically. I'm gonna hurt you. I'm gonna make you lose."

We're also told that deputies at the Sheriff's station were star struck by Gibson and a number of them went to Gibson's holding cell to get a look of the star. The problem for the Sheriff's department -- there's a mounted camera in the station and the deputies can be seen fawning over the actor. Sheriff's officials have called some of the officers who were caught on tape in and warned them they might be subject to discipline.

As TMZ reported, the arresting deputy was ordered by officials to take out references to Gibson's bad behavior. We're told the altered report makes no mention of the fact that Gibson attempted to flee the scene by running to his car to escape. We're also told that the officer checked a box on the report that Gibson was "belligerent." Ironically, even though officials did not order the deputy to remove that reference, they did order him to re-write the report to eliminate all references to the supporting evidence leading the officer to believe Gibson was indeed "belligerent."

Apologies from Mel Gibson mean nothing. If the allegations regarding his anti-semitic remarks and behavior are true, always remember that Mr. Gibson is an actor. Any and all apologies he makes are potentially "an act"; not necessarily sincere.

Me thinks there is a little Christian-bating going on here. Why all the attention?

Mel Gibson was only expressing what most people believe about Jews but do not hace the courage to say.

Compassion? You've gotta be joking. Drunk Jew-bashers don't deserve any compassion (he's also homophobic by the way). This is a man who "minimizes" the Holocaust and who is a longtime Jew-hater and gay basher. You want cites for his remarks #14? It's all readily available online. All you have to do is look and read. Gibson is a first class asshole, and as with Tom Cruise, the pigeons are coming home to roost.

First of all, I would like to say I'm not a fan of Mel's and I think he is a dope for his religious beliefs. That being said, I can see how he might be a little upset with Jewish people, considering how the Jewish state is destroying Lebanon.
He also has had to deal with a lot of Jews in the entertainment industry over his career and I'm sure many of them can be real pricks.
As for saying Jews start all the wars, there are a lot of people who feel the war in Iraq was instigated by the Jewish people in the US administration and that Israel and the Jewish lobby are pushing for war in Syria and Iran.
Therefore, considering his state at the time, he may not have been far off.

According to the arresting officer, Gibson "bolted," and had to be caught and restrained. I'm more than pretty sure that's a serious felony, no? Is he going to be charged for that or not? If not, are we not setting a new precedent? Defense lawyers across the land can now market "The Gibson Flee Cite," and prosecuters can argue that since the defendant is not a billionaire or even a multi-millionaire, the charge is valid. Of course this tack would likely fall on deaf ears if the defendant didn't think to use religous/racial epithets during the arrest process.

Respectfully and with NO tongue in cheek,

Does anyone have his actual living address?

I would love to send him a sympathy card.

Big deal, Mel Gibson has an alcohol problem and opened his mouth. No he shouldn't have but who hasn't done the same, I know that I did when I was drinking. I hope that none of you hold this against him instead hope that it stears him to sobriety. He is great at his profession and it would be our loss if we allowed this to hurt him. Get it together Mel as I trully enjoy your work

So what if Mel is an anti-semite, there are millions of them out there. His work is what matters, not his belief. The only concern he could have about his outburst is the ability to get the jews in Hollywood, who controll the movie industry, to back his projects. But, considering his personal wealth and popularity, he can tell them all to piss off and fund them himself. Don't sweat it Mel, your fans won't desert you. Your apology is enough, and far more than given by some of the a**hole leftists out there who have had similar discretions, and never had to atone for them.

I have a few things:

1) Mel Gibson is the scary kind of Christian-- he shows no love or respect for other religions or backgrounds.

2) Yes, he made the Passion, but just because Jesus was born into a Jewish family doesn't mean that Mel Gibson isn't anti-semetic. Jesus openly disagreed with many aspects of the Jewish, and for that matter, organized religion. That's why there is such a religion as Christianity-- its leader broke off from Judaism. Study up before you start talking, people. You risk sounding like a talking head for scary conservative Christians (which is an oxy moron).

My thoughts are with Mel Gibson as he continues to fight his alcoholism and I hope that he starts to see some change in himself.

Number 15 you make a ton of sense, something that TMZ does not want to have. You are right most drunks rant and rave. You show me police reports for celebrities and non celebrities when people are drunk, that information is rarely in there what they said, blah, blah blah

Havey Levin is just being a tool about it with his little EXCLUSIVES. What the heck do I care about 3 years ago

I think that Mel's comments were inappropriate, but this will not stop me from watching his movies. Compared with the antics of Brittany Spears, Madonna and many other stars, this is really nothing more than a man who had too much to drink.

Please make it known that Mr. Gibson is a member of the Orthodox Catholic Church of America, a sect that is notoriously Anti-Semitic. This group (including Mr. Gibson's father) has gone so far as to infer that the Holocost never even happened. I believe people's true feelings come out when intoxicated, and I am embarrased to be a Catholic today.
