47. Mel DESERVES all this criticism! He should have gotten this criticism when he made that blasphemous movie. The anti-semitism is a side issue that movie is anti-christian and so is MEL! Who cares that he is only human, who cares that it was a drunken mistake, the fact is HE SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF HIS PEDASTOOL and all those deaf dumb and blind people that profess to be christian who DEFEND HIM with "thou shall not judge" "he who is without sin cast the 1st stone" NEED TO WAKE UP! Or a replica of the knife that stabbed Nicole Brown Simpson? Would you sell a replica of the A Bomb or Gas chambers? Why would you buy or sell replicas of murder weapons that killed Jesus?

Mel has committed a crime (DUI) and by the laws of the land should receive due process with the courts. People, and yes that's all of use regardless of your race or gender should really stop persecuting others for acts that are not considered against the law. This is not making an excuse nor is it justifying Mel's actions because I feel he was very disrespectful, but too many people lives have been tarnished by our public views. This too shall pass, so please, lets give it a break.

52. Did everyone forget that Mel Gibson's father also had harsh words about Jews some time ago?

I guess, that, in this case, the apple certainly doesn't fall far from the tree.

I have read atricles by the Australian media highlighting Mr. Gibson's hatred of Jews some years ago. None of this surprises me.

Mel Gibson is a bigot. Worse, he's a bigot with a tendency to drive drunk. Words are one thing, but drunk behind the wheel kills people.

I think that with all the racial/religious bigotry the Human Race has put up with, this should no longer be tolerated. This is the 21st century. I don't mean only towards the Jews; ANY racial and/or religious hatred should be punished severely.

Mr. Gibson is truly a sad individual. He let the liquor bring down his filter enough to show just how sad he is. He is even sadder by not admitting this once he sobered up. Lock him up and take away his license for his drunk driving/speeding. Pity this sick individual for not having better judgement of people.

55. What a shame. Mel Gibson is obviously a very troubled soul and the only being in the universe who can truly help him overcome the demons that are eating away at him inside is GOD himself. His problems seem to go far beyond alcholism and a 12-step treatment program is not enough. Let's not burn him at the stake just yet...

Maybe, but then again maybe not. No one, apparently not even Gibson himself, denies that his father is anti-semetic. He was undoubtedly exposed to anti-semetic slurs and other expressions of hatred during his youth. I think it's almost impossible to believe otherwise. When lost to rage, as he seems to have been when arrested, he let loose with what he believed were the most insulting words he could speak, ones he learned in his childhood.

These comments are posted here as food for thought. Maybe Gibson is an anti-semite. I don't know the man, and neither do most of the people who praise or condemn him. He's an image on a screen, and even when performers consent to interviews, it's still a performance.

And to diputs hasub - I loved your "sleeping with your friend's wife" analogy. Just perfect! Gibson's apology is a "sorry I got caught" statement. His true thoughts simply weren't filtered. I guess that happens often when an alcoholic is arrested for driving while drunk.

60. I myself find it interesting that so many people posting here would like to hold Mr Gibson to a higher standard. Like having a couple of hundred million dollars makes you a better person. If neither of the arresting officers appeared to be of the jewish faith, then perhaps his comments were more like a commentary on current events. While I have many Jewish friends, I do not have any love for the state of Israel, and wish that more people would hold them and the US accountable for their actions. Sad to see the perception that all Arabs are terrorists and all Jews are victims in so many people's minds. just my two cents worth
