Gibson's New Gig -- Yom Kippur Keynote Speaker?

TMZ has obtained a letter from a prominent Los Angeles Rabbi asking Mel Gibson to speak at his temple on Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement.

Mel Gibson: ExclusiveIn the letter, David Baron, the Rabbi for the Temple of the Arts, the largest entertainment industry synagogue in the United States, wrote: "...I wish to invite you to come and speak in order that you might directly express to the Jewish community your remorse. I feel that Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement, would be an appropriate time."

Rabbi Baron added: "In our faith we are commanded to forgive when the offending party takes the necessary steps and offers an apology from the heart."

Rabbi Baron, who recently spent time with Pope Benedict XVI, has had prominent Yom Kippur speakers in the past. Last year, Senator Hillary Clinton spoke on personal forgiveness.

On Tuesday, Gibson acknowledged he made anti-Semitic remarks while under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. The actor reached out to the Jewish community to "help me on my journey through recovery." Gibson said he was not anti-Semitic but added "I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from..."

TMZ contacted Rabbi Baron, who is vacationing in Spain. He said: "Some members of the congregation were skeptical about Mr. Gibson's recent statement and felt he was absolute anti-Semite. My response was 'Better a repentant anti-Semite than an unrepentant anti-Semite.'"

TMZ contacted Gibson's rep who would not comment on the Rabbi's offer.

16. Agree with Benjamin, no apology to Jews especially with their barbaric actions in MiddleEast.

17. NO NO NO NO.

Let Mel take care of his alcoholism problems first. Trust me, that is going to take a while. This isn't LL's heat exhaustion. Good looking man, yet he has a major problem. LETS NOT FORGET HE WAS DRIVING DRUNK!

If you've known anyone affected by choosing to drive drunk, or by a person who mistakenly chose to drive drunk, you would not minimize this by pulling religion into it. This is a matter of life and death. Let Mel make movies when he has pulled himself together and no longer endangers lives.

18. Wake up Americans, why care about anti-s*mitic made by Gibson? Should we care more about our economy, security, job etc. This is just another propaganda from jews. Sad Hitler was not an America's President to kick out jews from USA.

19. Forgiveness is the most transformative human expressions there is--to both the forgiver and the forgiven. The greatest testament to the power of forgiveness is the true story of Immaculee Illigabiza--Rwandan Holocaust victim whose family was slaughtered by the Hutus. She hid in a bathroom for 3 months in order to save herself--and all the while continued to pray to forgive those who were destroying her world. It was a tough task she undertook, but she did it--and lives a life of love, free from the burden of bitterness that resentments carry. She is now a speaker who is sought after all over the world as an example of the power of forgiveness to transform broken lives into wholeness.

In that spirit, I say that if Mel can find the courage to speak to this congregation, I would say he should most definitely go to the mat. It is an opportunity for all to experience the openhearted beauty that forgiveness offers. After all, "To err is human, to forgive divine."

21. I'm not saying the Rabbi's offer is about making movies, that is Mel's PR handler's problem. I'm saying, why is this a bigger deal than the fact this man chose to endanger his lives and the lives of other people?????

Halle Berry rammed her SUV into another vehicle, permanently injuring another driver, and then left the scene of the crime. Do not try this at home, fans!

Since it was daylight, she was caught, and it was all hushed up. She must not have been drunk, since no remarks were caught in the report (her victim was hispanic).

25. Everybody is on the bandwagon to gain something for themselves over this matter. TMZ, CNN and the rest are raking in millions of dollars. This will all be forgotten within a few weeks as with all celebrity scandals. We need to get excited and passionate about more important things. The Rabbi is doing exactly what Mel Gibson wants with his attention and forgiveness.

28. i've been reading the responses to this article and find there's a lot of hatred being sent mel's way. my response to those haters, chill out. forget the many possible other reasons the rabbi might be harboring by inviting mel to his church. in my eye it's a proactive, yes, proactive move. this world needs healing, needs healing on all sides and mel has an opportunity to do a lot of healing in his own inimitable way. strangely, irrationally, we all owe him a debt of gratitude for as he heals himself we too are healed.

29. By his invitation, the rabbi is acknowledging that to err is human, and that Gibson should have an opportunity to exercise his penance. Mel is a public figure who made the mistake of making his personal demons public... are we so naive to think that most people don't harbor some latent prejudice of some kind or another? Perhaps the news media should take another look at the movie Crash, which did a pretty good job of making that point. Yes, what Mel said was terrible, but that doesn't mean he would act on those words... and I think he is sincere in saying that his faith directs him to live a life that welcomes all people, no matter their beliefs. Mel will do the right thing.

30. My worry is the lethal weapon he has (car) and the guts to drive 87 mph in a 40 mph zone. Think about all the innocent lives who were on the road with him at the same time. I think it`s high time human beings re-thinked about alcohol. It is not good and should be banned. It has ruined so many prominent people`s lives & children & mother`s lives and have contributed to so many deaths in the world and should be completely banned. We should all rise up and use our energy in condemning alcohol and not Mel and inject that seed into our young children`s minds that alcohol is dangerous and has ruined a lot of lives and should be made illegal and banned..
