Gibson's New Gig -- Yom Kippur Keynote Speaker?

TMZ has obtained a letter from a prominent Los Angeles Rabbi asking Mel Gibson to speak at his temple on Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement.

Mel Gibson: ExclusiveIn the letter, David Baron, the Rabbi for the Temple of the Arts, the largest entertainment industry synagogue in the United States, wrote: "...I wish to invite you to come and speak in order that you might directly express to the Jewish community your remorse. I feel that Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement, would be an appropriate time."

Rabbi Baron added: "In our faith we are commanded to forgive when the offending party takes the necessary steps and offers an apology from the heart."

Rabbi Baron, who recently spent time with Pope Benedict XVI, has had prominent Yom Kippur speakers in the past. Last year, Senator Hillary Clinton spoke on personal forgiveness.

On Tuesday, Gibson acknowledged he made anti-Semitic remarks while under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. The actor reached out to the Jewish community to "help me on my journey through recovery." Gibson said he was not anti-Semitic but added "I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from..."

TMZ contacted Rabbi Baron, who is vacationing in Spain. He said: "Some members of the congregation were skeptical about Mr. Gibson's recent statement and felt he was absolute anti-Semite. My response was 'Better a repentant anti-Semite than an unrepentant anti-Semite.'"

TMZ contacted Gibson's rep who would not comment on the Rabbi's offer.

302. May I remind you that Jesus was a Jew! It makes me sick how many people of the Christian faith are anti-semetic when the being who they worship was/is/always will be a Jew. Jesus was circumsized, ate Kosher food, observed the Sabbath, etc. Like it or not, you are praying to a Jew. To think that he would endorse anti-semitism is almost as dumb as thinking that Mel's opinions are correct. Get real.

303. John,
The reason the Muslems and Israel are always fighting is because of Sarah and Abraham.
Read your Bible. Sarah gave her hand maiden to Abraham because she was tired of waiting for the "promised" son.
Therefore, Ishmael was born.....ancestor to the Arab and Muslem nation. Then Isaac was born...ancestor to the Jewish nation called Israel. There has been hatred and fighting ever since. Israel is the "promised land" given to the Jews by the Almighty God. Everyone who curses Israel will be curses and everyone who blesses Israel will be blessed. In other words do not fight against Israel and the Jewish nation.

304. I am so very sad for all the anti-Semites that are writing in. I'm sure Jesus(The Jew) would be very proud right now to learn about all you Rightious Christians for whom he gave his life.

307. Ok- so you think you know world history,I take it-
The Jews have been tossed around and used by every country in Europe until they were almost extinguished- Did any of those Jews get to go back to their homes or BE COMPENSATED when the Nazi's came for their homes, bank accounts and belongings and finally their lives?????
Oh , you say that was a war- what about the native Americans- Were they compensated as they were forced to leave their homelands ?
The Jews have done EVERYTHING to create peace including several returns of painfully acquired land after being attacked IN SEVERAL WARS which yes you are right the BRitish horribly divided up the middle east and yes why not blame the Jews for that ,too-
I do not see the US returning California to Mexico or ANY other nation acting with the kind of unique olive branches that Israel as a nation alone has done-
when she is kicked in the face for this I agree with the Israeli's to FIGHT for their survival and I have TOTAL respect for them.
Get yourself enrolled into a real history class, smartass.

308. Mel Gibson may have been very stupid, but I feel that he has been unfairly targetted. There are so many that get away with so much in hollywood. To
crucify him on the cross that the passion of the christ created is foolish. He is
a human who like all of us stumbles. I have thoughts occasionally that if I spoke them I would be sent to task for. I do not agree with his views, but get over it.
I have heard so much bashing of a variety of celebs and I do not live or die on their values. Time will tell if Mel is serious or just recouping image, meanwhile
get a life.

310. 14. Mel Gibson was simply stating a fact, so why the big uproar. Think about it, What was the big issue in WW2. The middle east has been in a turmoil since 1948. Why, because the Palestinians had their land just taken away from them and given to the Jews, and they never got compensated.

uh dear frank...guess what... worry bout ur own country...millions of black folks werent compensated for building this country against their will....now what? im going to go out on a limb and say u have a problem with blacks too...

311. mel has sado-masochistic problems....the movies that he has control of all reveal sado-masochistic tendencies.....braveheart, pay-back, the passion, etc....are all movies in which he, or someone like him is brutalised horribly...and in many cases the hero who is tortured gets a sadistic revenge on the torturor...mel is seriously in trouble....his alcholism is a consequence of his problem.....he gets relief from feelings of sadism, masochism and guilt from alchohol........

312. and the reason mel is an antisemite is because he's what known as an "authoritarian personality".....a personality disorder pointed out in a study of facism done in the 50s by Adorno et al...."the authoritarian personality"....this personality is a consequence of an overbearing father figure who is unpredictable in terms of punishment and reward, resulting in a son who, confused about what is right or wrong, relies on trhe authority of the "state"...the police, the army, the ruling authorities, just whatever his dad tells him to know, and what to think and what to do. mel's dad was a well known jew-hater and mel, as a child, saw his dad as a terrifying unpredictable authority figure whom he probably hated but had to be obesiant to. sado-masochism is a direct result of this kind of father-son relationship.....

313. Yes, it is enough to follow the commandment of G-D to forgive. That doesn't mean that we have to forget, and it is then up to the offender (Gibson) to either repent for his transgression or not give it consideration. At that point, it becomes the offenders' problem to deal with.

If Gibson is using his "problem" as a publicity tour then it is then unrepentant behavior. "Thou does protesteth too much." Alcohol does not create thoughts, it only amplifies already existing beliefs. To bring up the reaction of the Jewish community about his "Passion" movie only proves that point. One is a product of their upbringing and considering his own fathers' rampage against Jews shows that this apple didn't fall far from the tree.
