Gibson's New Gig -- Yom Kippur Keynote Speaker?

TMZ has obtained a letter from a prominent Los Angeles Rabbi asking Mel Gibson to speak at his temple on Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement.

Mel Gibson: ExclusiveIn the letter, David Baron, the Rabbi for the Temple of the Arts, the largest entertainment industry synagogue in the United States, wrote: "...I wish to invite you to come and speak in order that you might directly express to the Jewish community your remorse. I feel that Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement, would be an appropriate time."

Rabbi Baron added: "In our faith we are commanded to forgive when the offending party takes the necessary steps and offers an apology from the heart."

Rabbi Baron, who recently spent time with Pope Benedict XVI, has had prominent Yom Kippur speakers in the past. Last year, Senator Hillary Clinton spoke on personal forgiveness.

On Tuesday, Gibson acknowledged he made anti-Semitic remarks while under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. The actor reached out to the Jewish community to "help me on my journey through recovery." Gibson said he was not anti-Semitic but added "I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from..."

TMZ contacted Rabbi Baron, who is vacationing in Spain. He said: "Some members of the congregation were skeptical about Mr. Gibson's recent statement and felt he was absolute anti-Semite. My response was 'Better a repentant anti-Semite than an unrepentant anti-Semite.'"

TMZ contacted Gibson's rep who would not comment on the Rabbi's offer.

31. As a non American I find it bizarre how differently police treat celebrities. Who would file an 8 page police report on a normal DUI and what that person said?
That is the larger question. And the fact Mel sounded off against the Jews? The fact again is that after 50 years of holacaust against the Palestinians and the recent slaughter in Lebanon and massacres at Shatilla and Sabra, apparantly the Jews are a protected country and we should all bow in deference to them and never say a bad word against them. (Because anything said against the Jews is anti-Semetic). What a wonderful world!

32. Maybe while he's at the temple he could show his solidarity by letting the Rabbi perform a bris on him!

34. I feel for Mr. Gibson. In a moment of real weakness, perhaps his true feelings came to the surface. Yet he has done the honorable thing; he has openly confessed how ugly his remarks were, has asked for forgiveness, and has sought help from those whom he offended to conquer his alcoholism and his bigotry. I applaud his remorsefulness and his willingness to humble himself. Would that more of us would come clean like he has. Wasn't it a Jew who once said, "Let him who is without sin, cast the first stone"? I hope people will drop their rocks and decide to pull for Mel to get the healing and restoration he seeks.

37. perhaps mel should have to make a movie about CATHOLIC PRIESTS MOLESTING LITTLE BOYS for GENERATIONS....AND HOW MANY MORE "PRIESTOPHILES" THEY CREATED BY THEIR ACTIONS...and how the priesthood may be singlehandedly responsible for the number of child molesters loose in our society today..... as his pennance for his anti-semitism. call it... "THE 2000 YEAR OLD CHILD MOLESTERS CLUB"...... a true story.............
i'd love to see it.

40. mel... take the rabbi 's offer......give $1,000,000.00 to help isreal's war torn homeless. maybe a trip to isreal...and another apology and some more money. oh! and make sure you get some alcoholism help NOW...

41. OK, here's what Mel Gibson can do to get out of this mess, like it never happened. And I'm being serious, this would really work:

Mel Gibson lives in Israel six months... a year if he wants legend status on Wikipedia.

Think about it; Jews don't even want to live Israel right now, it's a scary ass place.

That would take a lot of humility to eat that much crow, but millions of jews would actually consider his apology serious, and Mel would be right back in the game, making a new Mad Max.

Or he could do the Yom Kippur speech, leak to the press that he's fasting, lay low a year or two...

Then come out with a new Mad Max.

42. Let's not forget the real issue, driving drunk, people all over the world make comments everyday, and this much attention isn't given to a single person, he apologized, now move on and stop judging he needs to take care of himself and get the help he needs for his alcoholism. The press needs to find someone else to focus on, leave him alone!!!!

43. Mel Should Not Go! What was said was not anti-Semitic, but, an opinion. Mr. Gibson did not say he hated Jews, just that they start all the problems in the world. No apology necessary ; more people should speak up if they feel the same way. White Christians are tired of being the silent majority in this country. Mel, I'll be so disappointed if I see you in a beanie.

44. It is unfortunate that Mel made such comments, but is it really that big a deal? So he said F**** Jew, Jew this, Jew that! Who cares!! It is a free country, people can say whatever they want and can like or dislike anyone they want. Overall - Mel is a good man who has an alcohol problem that he needs to deal with. He is a man of devout faith who loves his family and friends very much. There have been many anti-christian episodes but when there is something anti-jewish - OH GOD FORBID - there is always such an UPROAR!! Cry me a river! PLEASE! Let's not forget the REAL CRIME - DRUNK DRIVING! Someone could have been killed!!

45. The offer never should have been extended. Making our spiritual leaders culpable for his egoitistic folly is childish to say the least, and insulting to say the likely, and frightening to say the worst. Repentance matters not. Only intention. Clearly that's all anyone's measuring of Israel's behavior anyway, yes? So why is Mellimac Gibson given more leeway? That makes zero sense.
Let me say that again. The OFFER. Should. NEVER. Have. Been. Extended.
Dude. He hates us. He doesn't care who we are. It doesn't matter what you/we do. PLEASE, do not forgive this murderer at (his adopted for sake of capital security) home. Please.
