Gibson's New Gig -- Yom Kippur Keynote Speaker?

TMZ has obtained a letter from a prominent Los Angeles Rabbi asking Mel Gibson to speak at his temple on Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement.

Mel Gibson: ExclusiveIn the letter, David Baron, the Rabbi for the Temple of the Arts, the largest entertainment industry synagogue in the United States, wrote: "...I wish to invite you to come and speak in order that you might directly express to the Jewish community your remorse. I feel that Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement, would be an appropriate time."

Rabbi Baron added: "In our faith we are commanded to forgive when the offending party takes the necessary steps and offers an apology from the heart."

Rabbi Baron, who recently spent time with Pope Benedict XVI, has had prominent Yom Kippur speakers in the past. Last year, Senator Hillary Clinton spoke on personal forgiveness.

On Tuesday, Gibson acknowledged he made anti-Semitic remarks while under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. The actor reached out to the Jewish community to "help me on my journey through recovery." Gibson said he was not anti-Semitic but added "I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from..."

TMZ contacted Rabbi Baron, who is vacationing in Spain. He said: "Some members of the congregation were skeptical about Mr. Gibson's recent statement and felt he was absolute anti-Semite. My response was 'Better a repentant anti-Semite than an unrepentant anti-Semite.'"

TMZ contacted Gibson's rep who would not comment on the Rabbi's offer.

61. If Mel Gibson would really like to make amends to the Jewish community, let him ask to be circumcised. We'll see how old Braveheart accepts pain as he truly becomes one of the Chosen People. 50 is not too old to have one's foreskin surgically removed, but it's a major operation compared to having it done at the age of 8 days. Think it over, Mel. Step up, and do the right thing. Oh, and by the way, your darling wife Robyn will appreciate your "sensitive" decision for the rest of your married lives. And besides, when you're in a public men's room, you won't be ashamed any longer since you'll now look like most American males.

62. This whole thing is too funny...next we will hear that Mel Gibson is of the same mindset as Hamas and Hisbollah and that people like him are the reason Isreal bombs Lebanon....

63. My Fellow Jewish Brothers. Please convert to the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church just as I did.

It will be worthwhile if you would like to avoid the eternal pains of hell as I did.

Remember, Jesus Loves you and shed His Blood for you as well.

Stop blastin Mel.Jesus Loves Mel as well and that is why He blessed him with his movie about Christ's Passion even though many non-converted Jews tried preventing it from being a success.

64. Quit trying to make this into a scandal......it is ridiculous. Mel Gibson, like every other person in the world, is entitled to his opinion on race, religion and anything else he cares to comment about. Just because he is famous doesn't mean he is any more accountable for his actions. Those criticizing Mel are just a bunch of judgmental idiots who have tremendous chips on their respective shoulders. We are not required to like Jews, Indians, Asians or cats, for that matter. I live in a city that is becoming more multicultural by the hour and I hate it and am making moves to get the hell out. I make NO apologies and neither should Mel.

65. Why do so many comments appear twice, three times, and even many multiples more? Is TMZ trying to look much more popular by reposting the same comment so many times? "Look at me, we have hundreds of people commenting on our stories!!"

66. I like Mel Gibson. I think that he can eventually get it. Can he come all the way and recognize that his thinking in absolutist fundamentalist terms is really a manifestation of his abuse of alcohol like so many before him? He's a good man. I think he can heal.

68. I hope the movie industry gives this incident the attention it deserves -- don't hire this creep, don't fund this creep's projects, don't provide this creep with post-production services. I don't care what anyone else thinks. If Mel Gibson can pull that tirade out of the blue in the middle of a DUI arrest, then he's a rabid hatemonger, and deserves the shambles he has made out of his life and career. Your life is f****d, Mel? Good on ya!

69. Mel, you want us to forgive you, those are the rules. The Rav extended you an open invitation to right your wrong in a way that will be excepting to the Jewish community. Anything short including your publicists damage control campaign won't do. Make a date with destiny - Yom Kippur, Oct 1st, Oct 2nd, pick a day, Temple Of The Arts, Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA . . . .

70. If that is what he feels than what he said is "freedom of speech" the only crime was DUI.

71. A common lunatic with a high priced PR agent. "I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from..." They came from an asshole.

72. An apology is sometimes nice, however, an amends is the true desire to attempt to change one's behavior and to effect repair. All those perfect humans throwing stones at Mel for behaving dangerously and speaking badly do not understand the nature of forgiveness allowing one to correct their harmful deeds. Kudo's to Mel Gibson for asking how he can make his
wrong(s) right. Kudos to Rabbi Baron.

How lucky for him if he can inded learn where those vicious words came from. He will then pass that along in a meaningful way to his 7 children and wife. What are all the naysayers passing along with their harsh criticism? Nothing beneficial to an angry and fearful world. All Jews have the responsibilty of Tiikkun Olam.

Good people do bad things. Look in the mirror before you judge him so harshly.

73. Have any of you made mistakes in your past? Not one of you has ever said a remark you regretted, racial or otherwise?? C'mon, you all want to throw the first stone. As long as your past isn't revealed, it's all okay right? People are people, actors are no different. The man made a mistake. If I cried every time some one made a racial statement against my own. i wouldnt have much of a life...Get on with yours!

74. Mel Gibson apologize for his comments about the Jewish community; he was not sober at the time. I believe we have all been guilty for stereotyping or blaming a particular group for the problems in the world. Who's blaming the Muslims or the Mexicans for taking American jobs or the Chinese for being the best drivers? Not me - i'm no racist and embrace all cultures. Our society has become so addicted to what culture or nationality we are that we cannot pinpoint that we all come from one race: the Human Race.
