Gibson's New Gig -- Yom Kippur Keynote Speaker?

TMZ has obtained a letter from a prominent Los Angeles Rabbi asking Mel Gibson to speak at his temple on Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement.

Mel Gibson: ExclusiveIn the letter, David Baron, the Rabbi for the Temple of the Arts, the largest entertainment industry synagogue in the United States, wrote: "...I wish to invite you to come and speak in order that you might directly express to the Jewish community your remorse. I feel that Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement, would be an appropriate time."

Rabbi Baron added: "In our faith we are commanded to forgive when the offending party takes the necessary steps and offers an apology from the heart."

Rabbi Baron, who recently spent time with Pope Benedict XVI, has had prominent Yom Kippur speakers in the past. Last year, Senator Hillary Clinton spoke on personal forgiveness.

On Tuesday, Gibson acknowledged he made anti-Semitic remarks while under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. The actor reached out to the Jewish community to "help me on my journey through recovery." Gibson said he was not anti-Semitic but added "I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from..."

TMZ contacted Rabbi Baron, who is vacationing in Spain. He said: "Some members of the congregation were skeptical about Mr. Gibson's recent statement and felt he was absolute anti-Semite. My response was 'Better a repentant anti-Semite than an unrepentant anti-Semite.'"

TMZ contacted Gibson's rep who would not comment on the Rabbi's offer.

93. Mr. Levin . . . journalism or sensationalism? He was drunk and driving. Illegal. As a result of his excessive drinking, his darkest feelings came pouring out of his mouth. Unfortunate for him, since predators such as yourself and your organization are always in the shadows waiting for such an opportunity to "expose". Although, this will present the opportunity for the Jewish community to again portray themselves as victims. We are ALL bigots in some fashion, Including the very pure, very chaste Jewish community. We ALL need to seek forgiveness.

94. If I were a Jew living in Nazi Germany during WWII, and I had offers of safety from non-Jewish Mel Gibson story bloggers, I'd definitely choose to hide out with and trust the fine folks here who denounce Mr. Gibson's drunk driving and anti-semitism, but then go on to show compassion and understanding for him as a fellow human being.

But then again, if that could have actually happened, I'd have a family tree, and not just the hacked-off, family stump.

95. Mel's dad has some anti-Jewish sentiment, from what I've read. IMO, 'some' generally means only a little of his true thoughts and feelings have been expressed publicly and written about. So Mel has likely heard and absorbed a lot more of it over many, many years. What he said while drunk may reflect deeper learnings from his childhood, not necessarily what he conciously believes.

I think he's doing what he can to achieve a rapprochement with the Jewish people and to put this behind him. I agree that his main focus at this point should be resolving his drinking issues since he has admitted to past alcohol problems and clearly needs help with the situation.

Unlike a lot of Hollywood celebs, he apparently hasn't minimized or tried to deny what he said or did. That takes some courage when your life is held up for scrutiny by millions of people.

For my part, I wish him success with his efforts to make amends and deal with his personal problems. I think he a good man, not perfect, but who is? He deserves his chance to improve his life the came as anyone else.

96. Mel should learn to HUMBLE himself. It is precisely his arrogance that put him in this position - of thinking he's able to do whatever he wants to without consequence. Life is having to teach Mel a lesson he should have learned long ago. So by now - age 50 - he hasn't figured out that he's NOT a happy drunk when he drinks???? Like did he just figure this one out? Couldn't he have just gone along quietly with the officer and apologize for drinking/driving? Did he have to display his arrogant nature in such a manner? Each and every one of us (who has ever been drunk) knows how our bodies react to alcohol - personally I get really silly and as things progress I cry. Not a good thing for me so I don't drink. Come on Mel with all of your years, plus your talent and intelligence - you surely must've been able to realize that alcohol and you - do not mix.

97. Why won't we condemn bush as we are Mel. Mel isn't humilating anyone, he isn't kidnapping and then torturing people on a massive scale. he isn't locking people up indefinatly, he isn't murdering and destroying other people and their land.

98. Many people actually believe what Mel Gibson said about Jews. But Not so many people would go berserk about Jews when they are arrested for DUI.
What's up with that? I don't get it.

99. Many people believe what Mel said about Jews. They are the problem that kinda stuff. But not so many people would go berserk about Jews when arrested for DUI.
It's got nothing to do with Jews. I don't get it. What was he thinking??? Was he drinking coz he was mad at Israel bullying Lebanon or something?

100. Why chastise Mr. Gibson for his telling it like it is. I'm really tired ot hearing about the Jews taking offense to evey little remark a person in this so-called freedom of speech country says. Jews have no problem saying or doing anything to anyone without reprocussion so turnaroud is fair game. What do you think is going on in the Mideast at this moment? The Jews are killing innocents they are labelling terrorists and this administration is defending this action which I think is absurd. They continually play the Jew-holocaust card for what they believe to be the slightest infraction against them. I have news for the Jews, there were other faiths and nationalities of masses that suffered in the holocaust not just the Jews. The Jews created their state during the 30's and 40's with backing from England and the U.S. They moved into the mideast and took land that did not belong to them and basically were squatters where they had no business being, then they wonder why there's hate against them, war has been raging ther since. Mel Gibson was right on target with his comment and eventually the Jews will be responsible for the destruction of all humanity on this planet thru a third world war, just wait and see. LAY OFF MEL for Christ's sake!!

101. why is everyone worried about this freak?
so he's in rehab, and now they want him to speak to show remorse..they're building quite the defense for when his ass gets before the judge, no?
he's a nut, and hasn't been on my t.v. screen , or in my dvd player since i watched the first 10 minutes of the passion of the christ.
it was a mockery and the movie should have been banned, let alone approved b y the pope ! shame on anyone who praises him for that kind of work, and supports him in his cause to be a pr*ck.

102. The jews in Hollywood are using this incident to destroy Mel Gibsons career. Because of the "Passion of Christ" movie exposing the truth of the Jews strong political influence in getting Christ crucified, which no matter how they look at it, it happened and it's part of history. Did the Jews set him up to this incident? No.
But this is a perfect setup for them and they are milking it to the max. They have altered Mel's picture to make him look like Saddam Husseium.
It's so ironic how Hollywood finds it so easy to offend other religions, and nationalities and think nothing of it, but when someone has to say something that is truthful about them and their behavior or treatment of others, they find it offensive and they gather up the machinery of the media to sway public oppion to their favor. Maybe that's why the country is begining to have strong ill feelings towards Jews. They have little regards for the lives of others and show themselves as wonderful loving and fair people on television and the media but only towards their own.
That is what wrong with this picture.

103. Zionists have escalated their killing of innocent women and children and infants, and all you want to do is waste time torturing and crucifying Mel Gibson. Sound familiar?

This proves that the 'Jews' were 'out to get him' - he had ample justification for feeling persecuted.

All of this excess condemnation of him simply proves it - just like the genocidal murder of innocent children proves that the Zionists are just as capable of maniacal murder as the Nazis were.

104. If Mel Gibson's hair were on fire, I wouldn't bother to spit on him. He is a Bigot, with a capital B.

105. Why is everyone who doesn't love Jews or Israel considered anti-semitic?
Why are facts considered anti-semitism?
Leave him alone, I think he has freedom of speech. Or at least we used to have something called freedom of speech until the liberals decided what was allowed and what wasn't.
