Madonna's Good Deeds and Not So Good Deeds

Madonna on the CrossAngelina Jolie better watch out because Madge is gunning for her crown as the Third World's philanthropy queen.

Madonna revealed to TIME magazine her plan to care for the orphans of Malawi, Africa, and has committed to raising $3 million for various programs.

Madonna's charitable crusade includes building an orphanage that will feed 1,000 kids a day and financing a $1 million documentary -- not about her latest tour, but about the plight of the children.

While the orphanage has no religious affiliation, the center will offer programs based on Spirituality for Kids, Kabbalah's children's program.

The Material Girl is the religion's unofficial spokesperson, and says, "One of the main precepts of Kabbalah is that we're put on this earth to help people. And your job is to figure out how you can help, and what it is that you can do."

While Madge's new religion may be singing her praises, her old one - Catholicism - is up in arms over her latest antics.

Madonna's Confessions Tour arrives in Rome on Sunday, and the Catholic Church believes her onstage mock-crucifixion with a fake crown of thorns thrown in for good measure "comes close to blasphemy."

This latest controversy comes on the heels of NBC's decision to air her concert special in November with the "Live to Tell" crucifixion routine reportedly still in place.

61. Has anyone ripping the show actually SEEN it? I have (my crazy friend gave me his tickets), and #42 is right. The crucifix scene is very moving and NOT blasphemous. It is a portrayal in music, poetry, and dance of the biblical concept of "Whatsoever you do tot he least of my brothers, you do to me (Jesus)." Madonna is standing in for the victims of social injustice, and singing of how acts of social injustice affect a person for life. By being on the cross, she is driving the point home that Jesus is with the downtrodden. I was stunned when I saw this, because I had heard of this part of the show, and assumed it was going to be Madonna showing disrespect for Christianity by taking its most powerful symbol and mocking it, glorifying herself as God. This is so not the case (and, as others have said, would have been terribly boring "Ooh, Madonna mocking Jesus, how shocking (yawn)".)
Whatever she personally believes (and none of us really know what's inside her soul), her work stands on its own as a beautiful and moving multimedia performance combining poetry, dance, music, photography, lighting effects, and, yes, religious symbolism to convey a great message.

62. Laurie,

Please put down the snakes, stop speaking in tongues, the guys with white suits will be there with your strait jacket shortly.

Larry,

The good deed is helping starving children. Please provide some evidence that Madonna "spent 10 million dollars in publicity to let everybody know about it".

That statement is so ludicrous. But bashers never speak from fact, they just spout trash. We'll be waiting for that link to an article saying that Madonna spent 10M to let everyone know. Come on Larry, let's see it.

63. LOL, Rodney, #34!! Mighty sensitive, aren't we? Very odd.... Just stated my opinion, dude. Unlike you, on the other hand, who probably has a shrine to Madonna and stalks her. I guess we'll be seeing you on the news shortly. Probably dressed in a bustier, lace skirt, head band, and lots and lots of crucifixes! Oh, and with the center of your teeth blackened out! LOL! Now THAT'S entertainment! LOL!

64. Just as I suspected Larry. You couldn't back up your trash-throwing with any facts. Typical. I don't have a shrine to anyone in my home, but I think it is petty and ridiculous to attack Madonna, who is trying to help starving children, with ludicrous statements like you made.

As is typical with people who talk trash, you can't back up anything you say, so you resort to personal attacks.

Your personal attacks were juvenile and pathetic.

65. Not sensitive, just sticking with the facts. Madonna is helping starving children and all you can do is sh!t on it and make false statements.

People like you are a dime a dozen. Talk trash and have no basis in fact to back you up. When you get called on it, you realize that you have nothing to support your ridiculous statements, so you resort to personal attacks.

Pathetic, really.

66. starrrrrr,

There it is. There's the true bigot coming out. We all knew you had it in you.

You can stereotype me all you want, but you know nothing about me other than I am a fan of Madonna. And I appreciate what she is doing for starving children.

You can't bait me with your childish banter.

67. Hey Brannon, you've got SERIOUS self-confidence issues.

Basically, what you are saying is that Madonna could do what she wants, and get on with her life, and the rest of us should shut up?

Just because she is an artist and performer and isn't afraid of peole like me I should shut my mouth?

So, you think that artists, and performers, or anyone famous who is successful and makes lots of money is better than you, and you have no right to talk and have an opion?

That's riduculous. Madonna sure isn't more entitled than I am to do or say anthing, not more entitled than I am to have an opinion, and she doesn't scare me in the bit.

You are one sorry, lost ,lacking in self-confidence dude.

68. LOL , Rodney! People come here to express their opinions, whether you like it or not. You've attacked any poster who doesn't agree with your deranged Madonna worship. Hey--guess what---I don't like her. Deal with it!

Posted at 9:59PM on Aug 4th 2006 by starrrrrr

69. starrrrrr,

I am deranged because I like Madonna? Um, ok, that's your opinion.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just think it is sad that people like you crap on celebrities who do something generous. If they don't do anything at all, then they are selfish. If they do something like spend millions of dollars to help starving children then they are still selfish, because according to people like you they are doing it for publicity. They can't win.

I find you to be one who has issues. You proclaim that celebrities do everything for attention. Then you list all these attributes about yourself (I'm young, beautiful, successful), like you are desperate for approval. You sound an awful lot like the celebrities that you say need attention.

Good luck with that denial problem of yours.

70. So sad, Rodney...so sad. I'm truly embarassed for you.

Posted at 10:04AM on Aug 5th 2006 by starrrrrr

71. Guys, Guys. Let's relax. She's just an over the hill pop star trying to stay relevant so she's getting desperate. I believe this is the second or third time in her career she's used the cross to offend people. Madonna is running out of ideas and soon enough she'll break a hip or die or something and all you Madonna fanatics can get a life finally.

72. To poster #38. I think anyone that would mock Christ is "anti-christ". Not "the" anti christ . Isn't she Jewish now or something? Anyway, I was making a joke. I happen to be liberal and I don't care what she does but I think its sad that she tries to offend people just to get attention. She didn't offend me because ultimately its HE that will judge her. I don't give a shit about Madonna, never have, never will. She's never offended me but clearly her "gimmicks" offend some people so quit being so "scared" about other people opinions. This is America. If you put yourself on a cross, people will judge.

73. Madonna has made her money by being outrageous and shocking people but she will be paid back for this message by hanging on a cross. First her own children will kick her in the butt when they behave like the slut she taught our youth they could be and then God will catch her when she takes her last breath. Sadly our world is all about money and fame and she's made the most of her business ventures albeit like Stern it was only about sex and living on the ledge. And, so she'll be paid back for this one. That cross was shocking and for those of us who believe in God and Jesus and are respectful and why wouldn't we be, it is horrific and the efforts to stay in spotlight by an aging ugly foul freak whose dentist abandoned her long ago. Say it as it is .. she is a pig... and a mother .. and she's going to tell her own chlidren to be good .. I don't think so!

74. I'm not sure that I should resend anything to this site and comment more but mine remains the same. Madonna will reap from her deeds, the cross she'll bear from her children who as adults will not respect her. Most of us don't already. And, yes, she is a great business woman, I couldn't have done that .. or wouldn't.

Posted at 9:03PM on Aug 5th 2006 by Val

75. Boy Madonna's act is getting really stale! Didn't we all see this already?
