The Z List
This Week's Biggest Losers 08/05/06

Scott Baio, Barbra Streisand and Rob Schneider

For some, like Mel Gibson celebrity impersonator Rohn Evans or the pair of anonymous Ohio jokesters posting anew on the satirical blog "Mel's Musings," the actor's PCH flare-up is a bonanza. But for most others in the Zone, the events first reported by this website are akin to the French movie poster tag line for Mel's 1998 action flick Tequila Sunrise - "Un Cocktail Explosif."

Rob SchneiderRob Schneider: Many people feel it's still too soon for 9/11-themed movies such as "United 93" and next Wednesday's "World Trade Center." So imagine how those folks must feel about the full-page ad taken out by actor Rob Schneider in this past Thursday's Hollywood trade paper Daily Variety, as sort of a spoof of his own similar battle a year ago with L.A. Times columnist Patrick Goldstein over "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo." "I, Rob Schneider, a 1/2 Jew, pledge from this day forward to never work with Mel Gibson, actor-director-producer and anti-Semite..." the ad begins. It gets better with a gag about "Passion of the Christ 2," but overall, this is about as well-timed as the idea of a condemnation of Gibson by another half-Jewish actor (his "Air America" and "The Singing Detective" co-star Robert Downey Jr.).

Bruce DaveyBruce Davey: Formerly Mel's business affairs manager, this fellow Aussie joined forces with the actor to form Icon Productions. And what this past week's DUI disaster may have felled most regrettably in terms of the company's future worldwide box office bottom line is a second biblical passion project now far more ironic than iconic. Based on the book "My Glorious Brothers" by Howard Fast, the Gibson-directed film was to be all about the Maccabees, a Jewish people that retook Jerusalem from the Greeks in 167 B.C. and relit the Menorah. This now has about as much of a chance of getting made as that other desert uprising Icon Entertainment project, "Mad Max 4."

Scott BaioScott Baio: Just a few months before he was featured in a Bugsy Malone-centric episode of the British ITV series "After They Were Famous," the artist formerly known as Charles and Chachi suited up with Mel for a now-infamous 2003 Los Angeles Sheriff's Department PSA (resuscitated earlier this week right here on TMZ). The Internet can be a lethal weapon when it comes to reconfirming fading career pageantry, and so, tickled by this unexpected bit of street theater, fans have since been reacquainting themselves with Baio's latest film credits ("Super Babies: Baby Geniuses 2," "Van Horn: Tour of Duty"). It all adds up to a vibe somewhere in between Baio's VH1 pilot "Let's Kill Scott Baio" and the false reports of his death in 1997.

Barbra StreisandBarbra Streisand: Liberal pundits have been up in arms this week about the lack of Mel condemnation from folks such as Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Jeff Berg, boss of Gibson's talent agency ICM. But what about Streisand, Malibu's Jewish den mother? She crossed paths, indirectly, with Mel at a 75th anniversary tribute show to Sinatra. But this, truly, was a golden opportunity for Babs to focus some fury at her neighbor and, in the process, goose sagging ticket sales for her upcoming concert tour. Instead, she allowed herself to be beaten to the punch by east coast namesake Barbara Walters.

Avi Korein: As head of something called the S.I.S.S. (Screen International Security Services), this 45-year-old Israeli has overseen bodyguard detail for A-listers such as Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. But it is Gibson, Korein's personal client, who may now bring him a whole lot more bang for the buck. The actor's comments have inflamed the kooksphere, and – like Mel's Jewish publicist, Alan Nierob - Klein now finds himself caught up in some unusually resonant crossfire. Who knows, if things get really dicey, Klein might want to switch out the one-time potential star of "Mad Max 4" for his first big client, Bruce Willis, and the relatively easier task of keeping things kosher on the set of the upcoming "Die Hard 4."

31. i am a little confused so maybe you can help me out. from what i have read so far after combing the internet is that mel was stupid drunk and made a comment about jews and the current war situation. am i wrong here? i don't think i am hearing anti semitism...i think i am hearing somebody in the wrong place at the wrong time express how he feels about the current political climate in israel. can't begin to tell you how many times i have heard people say "f*****g muslims" since 9/11 and expressed their anger over our current state of affairs. have i missed something? doesn't sound like anti semitism....sounds like anti war.

33. Dear Mr. Harvey Levine,

Here is a quiz for your audience. I am not a jew but I am a semite myself. Guess where I come from?

Anoher question. What do you think about politiians, hollywood big names, etc calling moslems and arabs terrorists, pigs, etc. Isnt that anti-semite also?

Throughout human race hostory and regardless of skin colour, religion, race, etc when people or nations hold a high level of power, authority and influence, they killed, tortured and humuliate the weak. Think of the nazis did to jews 60 years ago and also think about what Israel is doing to the Palestinians and lebanese people. It does not matter how you kill (gaz chamber or throwing a bomb on innocent people), the end result is the same: death. The morale of the story is no difference. Best. Momo

34. Any celebrity that speaks out against Mel Gibson at this time is missing the boat. It is not nice to kick someone when they are down. Those who speak poorly of him need only remember, the camera seeks you too. It's only a matter of time when you too are so closely scrutinized.

Heads up!

35. I agree with a lot of these guys, were is the outrage over comments made about Christians by entertainers or in polotics. Is there a double standard or what? This could be just an attempt to get back at Mel for going out on his own with Passion and making it one of the biggest movies ever more than anything.

36. Wake-up all you deniers. Mel Gibson is anti-semitic beyond just words. He has taken concrete actions to put his money behind his intolerance. He has funded a gettaway resort and bible study programs in Malibu specifically for Catholic priests who oppose Vatican II (the series of reformations from the Pope directly which finally, and officially, declared that the Jews were not culpable for the death of Jesus Christ). He has never condemned of refuted any of the words of his more openly anti-Semitic father. He claims that Jews are responsible for all the wars in the entire history of the world. Give me a break people. Mel Gibson is an anti-Semite, clear as a bell. And don't forget that age-old saying: "in vino veritas", which means, "in wine, there is truth." Mel Gibson was drunk, so all of his inhibitions were destroyed and his true inner feelings, thoughts and desires came out. That's what alcoholl does: It lets you express your true self without andy fear of retribution. So what he said is 100% his word and his belief. He is only now apologizing for "his actions" in a greedy attempt to salvage his career, which clearly will go down the tubes. And don't forget: So far, as of August 6, 2006, he still ahs not actually directly said that he does not believe the Jews are guilty for Christ's death and that he disagrees with the many nasty, mean (and untrue) things his father has said about Isreal.

37. All these people defending poor lil Mel Gibson. If the police hadn't picked him up, maybe this drunk driver would have killed someone. Drunks say what they really think. He hates Jews and he doesn't care enough about people in general not to drive drunk. It's no surprise to anyone who knows about his father that he's an anti-Semite. That's the way he was raised. There are also people in Hollywood who hate black people, rednecks, Asians, and Hispanics, but who don't tell people they hate them because it's not good for the career. Just because you keep your mouth shut doesn't mean the hate isn't there. He also told the policeman how powerful he is and that they would regret stopping him. Those words also tell volumes about the man. If it hadn't been for the police trying to hide the anti-Semitic remarks he would have gotten away with this and continued driving drunk. Now maybe he will get some help and be less arrogant. The Greeks had a word for this: hubris.
And that blogger who said Michael Jackson is forgiven is a real moron.

38. Mel Gibson is a wonderful actor, I have always loved and respected him and will certainly continue to do so. All you hypcrites need something to dwell on and leave him alone.. I wish everyone that loves Mel would go out and buy any and everything he's done and give him all our support and love.. How about it all you great Mel fans?? Thanks

39. This is one time that we people who love from the heart, speak up on behalf of Mel Gibson. He's no worse that anyone who wrote all the ugly crap about him, I believe his apologies came from the heart and are very sincere . I believe he is truely sorry for something he did when he was drunk... Drinking is also a sickness just like the one that causes hateful people to speak hate from their mouth.. You all; that are so mean, are just jealous.. All this publicity will surely help him...

40. First of all, I wasn't aware that OJ, Michael Jackson, Nixon, etc, were "forgiven", and if you don't think Woody Allen's box office has been hit by his marrying his stepdaughter, you're nuts.

Second of all, I don't believe how fast the "enough already" cries started. Given this schmuck's track record on the issue of anti-semitism, do you really think he just gets some bad press for a few days, and that's it? Face it, the guy's got to show he really isn't the bigoted ass he now appears to be, and he ought to do it by making his own statement, not through the canned damage control of some publicist. BTW, Melinda, I'm SOOO sorry my people are "ANNOYING ANNOYING ANNOYING" you. We'll be sure to ask you about our image before we express any more opinions the next time one of your hypocritical idols goes off on an anti-semitic rant. Shall we have other minorities check in with you too?

42. I just want to say the media is being unfair and hateful towards Mel Gibson, the media is blowing it out of proportion.
How is that Mel can direct a movie so brilliant a movie "The Passion of Christ" and they are saying he is "anti what-ever"....it's cruel intent on the medias part.....society is so judemental. Mel has done more wonderful things than this situation.
Mel I'm behind you, "this too shall pass" and it's sad that people judge you on this "one" thing when you have done so much more good. Please hang in there and "bounce back".....from someone that has gotton a dui....and lived threw a stuped sitation. Your not a bad person!....the media has taken this and run with it.....it was an isolated incident. I blame the media for blowing it out of proportion...........Jenny

43. damn, the guy was drunk!! we all say stupid things when we are drunk.. If he wasnt a Movie star, WOULD PEOPLE REACT THE SAME WAY IF A NOBODY GOT DRUNK AND SAID SOME STUPID THINGS ABOUT JEWISH PEOPLE??? NO!!!! GIVE THE GUY A BREAK..HES A GREAT ACTOR AND DIRECTOR, I WILL STILL WATCH HIS MOVIES

44. Hey SUSAN - Didn't you just do what Mel did? Except of course you're obviously anti-Australian, rather than anti-Jewish. As such, I demand an immediate apology (or 2) and retraction, along with community service. If not, I think that I and all my fellow Australians should stand together and do everything we can to make your life miserable and end your livelihood. Oh wait - you weren't DRUNK.

And of course your comments just go to show how ignorant you really are. "Australian trash"? Whatever.

45. I believe the most honest thing that he said was he wanted to look within and find out where his comments had their birth. No one but he will ever know. But, the fact of the matter is he didn't offer some lame, insincere excuse. He has a problem with alcohol. That concerns me more than his words.

No, this will hardly make a ripple in the career of someone who spent $25 million of his own money to make a movie.

I don't believe everyithing reported in the media; there is too much bias either intentionaly or unconciously. Perhaps, just perhaps his frustration at the US's complete support of Israel is weighing on his mind at this time. Maybe, just maybe he is the first celebrity to basically point out that, " there is an effing elephant stalking across Lebannon, murdering innocent people and we sit here, smile and say, "well, a soldier was kidnapped!"

Hmmm. What would Americans have said if our government had bombed urban neighborhoods in Iraq for the killing of American soldiers? For their kidnapping? What's the difference? We apparently support Israel in doing just that. Once again, we will sit back and watch Israel expand her borders. And, I am so baffled as to why we (the US) tolerates it.

Oh, wait. Can't point that out. That would be politically incorrect of me. And, it make me an anti Jew.
