The Z List
This Week's Biggest Losers 08/05/06

Scott Baio, Barbra Streisand and Rob Schneider

For some, like Mel Gibson celebrity impersonator Rohn Evans or the pair of anonymous Ohio jokesters posting anew on the satirical blog "Mel's Musings," the actor's PCH flare-up is a bonanza. But for most others in the Zone, the events first reported by this website are akin to the French movie poster tag line for Mel's 1998 action flick Tequila Sunrise - "Un Cocktail Explosif."

Rob SchneiderRob Schneider: Many people feel it's still too soon for 9/11-themed movies such as "United 93" and next Wednesday's "World Trade Center." So imagine how those folks must feel about the full-page ad taken out by actor Rob Schneider in this past Thursday's Hollywood trade paper Daily Variety, as sort of a spoof of his own similar battle a year ago with L.A. Times columnist Patrick Goldstein over "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo." "I, Rob Schneider, a 1/2 Jew, pledge from this day forward to never work with Mel Gibson, actor-director-producer and anti-Semite..." the ad begins. It gets better with a gag about "Passion of the Christ 2," but overall, this is about as well-timed as the idea of a condemnation of Gibson by another half-Jewish actor (his "Air America" and "The Singing Detective" co-star Robert Downey Jr.).

Bruce DaveyBruce Davey: Formerly Mel's business affairs manager, this fellow Aussie joined forces with the actor to form Icon Productions. And what this past week's DUI disaster may have felled most regrettably in terms of the company's future worldwide box office bottom line is a second biblical passion project now far more ironic than iconic. Based on the book "My Glorious Brothers" by Howard Fast, the Gibson-directed film was to be all about the Maccabees, a Jewish people that retook Jerusalem from the Greeks in 167 B.C. and relit the Menorah. This now has about as much of a chance of getting made as that other desert uprising Icon Entertainment project, "Mad Max 4."

Scott BaioScott Baio: Just a few months before he was featured in a Bugsy Malone-centric episode of the British ITV series "After They Were Famous," the artist formerly known as Charles and Chachi suited up with Mel for a now-infamous 2003 Los Angeles Sheriff's Department PSA (resuscitated earlier this week right here on TMZ). The Internet can be a lethal weapon when it comes to reconfirming fading career pageantry, and so, tickled by this unexpected bit of street theater, fans have since been reacquainting themselves with Baio's latest film credits ("Super Babies: Baby Geniuses 2," "Van Horn: Tour of Duty"). It all adds up to a vibe somewhere in between Baio's VH1 pilot "Let's Kill Scott Baio" and the false reports of his death in 1997.

Barbra StreisandBarbra Streisand: Liberal pundits have been up in arms this week about the lack of Mel condemnation from folks such as Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Jeff Berg, boss of Gibson's talent agency ICM. But what about Streisand, Malibu's Jewish den mother? She crossed paths, indirectly, with Mel at a 75th anniversary tribute show to Sinatra. But this, truly, was a golden opportunity for Babs to focus some fury at her neighbor and, in the process, goose sagging ticket sales for her upcoming concert tour. Instead, she allowed herself to be beaten to the punch by east coast namesake Barbara Walters.

Avi Korein: As head of something called the S.I.S.S. (Screen International Security Services), this 45-year-old Israeli has overseen bodyguard detail for A-listers such as Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. But it is Gibson, Korein's personal client, who may now bring him a whole lot more bang for the buck. The actor's comments have inflamed the kooksphere, and – like Mel's Jewish publicist, Alan Nierob - Klein now finds himself caught up in some unusually resonant crossfire. Who knows, if things get really dicey, Klein might want to switch out the one-time potential star of "Mad Max 4" for his first big client, Bruce Willis, and the relatively easier task of keeping things kosher on the set of the upcoming "Die Hard 4."

46. Why you did not show my comments? That is not right. It is called censure. Hey we preach love and behind doors we use knives. Momo

47. How about the movie "Saved" -- a two-hour ridicule of Christianity? I don't recall any of the Hollywood set decrying that debasement of a people and their religion. If one good thing that can come out of this is to hang together and speak up when attacked. Christians are notably reticent in this regard.

48. This is to everyone.

Mel Gibson is not just anti-Semitic. He's also homophobic and sexist. His behavior proves that he's a bigot.

People that don't think he's anti-Semitic simply want to ignore the facts. He has exhibited anti-Semitism many times.

Forgiveness requires true repentance. His apologies, in my opinion, are insincere. By the way, he has not apologized for not speaking out against his father's denial of the Holocaust, his movie The Passion of the Christ that exclusively blames Jews for Jesus' death, his "sugar tits" comment, or the numerous pejorative remarks he made about gay people in the early 1990s. With this list of wrongs for which he never attempted to apologize, Mel Gibson should not be "forgiven."

I do love from the heart. I love all people. That's why I can't put up with bigotry of any sort. That's why I'm boycotting Mel Gibson.

I urge the general public and the entertainment community to join me in this boycott. This is the organizational website: http://www.xanga.com/boycottmelgibson

Thank you verey much for your time.

49. Mel is a complex human being. He may have both negative thoughts about some things that some Jewish people do AND in general not hate Jews. That doesn't make him a bigot or anti-Semite. It means he has mixed feelings. Who among us doesn't have mixed feelings about things we wish were clearer? He drank more than he should have, he got mad, and he said things he shouldn't have said (and undoubtedly wishes he hadn't). Give the guy a break. This, however, does not condone his apparently obnoxious, belligerent, and arrogant behavior, nor his drinking when he is an admitted alcoholic. He needs to stop drinking and stop acting out his anger. We need to stop being so judgmental and condemning based on so little information.

50. Mel has a great talent. Leave the guy alone. If you call him anti-semite, then check all the movies made by Hollywood jews on Arabs and moslems. What shoudl we call them?

51. Oh I suppose that the rockets that are being lobbed into Israel are just mere fireworks and the raid into Israel that ended with the capture of two military personnal which started this mess was just a prank that gone wrong. All they are doing is defending themselves and trying to get rid of the people who say that they do not have the right to exist.

52. I read with interest, the comments given by tmz,(levine), about mel gibsons drunken slurs. It comes as no surprise to most of us that a great lady, singer, and actress, like "babs" would not comment about mr. gibsons untimely drunken remarks. She, and others of her caliber have risen up thru the ranks in hollywood and provided us with great intertainment for many years, and still do. Now the small people(tmz, (levine), who are in love with their own voice, think she should have shouted her fury to the heavens in her anger. Your fans take their hats off to you, "babs", and we still love you. A lady you will always be. As for you small people, GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!

54. Who really cares what some celebrity says - far more important is that the USA is supplying arms to Israel and spreading war for profit.

56. listen - he Gibson said something wrong - he apologized - and know he is trying to make amends - he is a talented actor and director - i will definitely see any of his new work that interests me - so the press (internet, hardcopy, television, radio, etc) have lost the battle to destroy his career - the press should move on.

ps: stop insuating that 'The Passion of Christ" was anti-semetic, it wasn't - read some serious christian theology before making false allegations.

57. Oh, I forgot to mention a real bigot, hows about Esther, you know alias Madonna?
One anti-christian, anti-catholic nut case. Goes to show, just because you have a decent talent and you marry UP, you are still low life and you just can't buy class!
I won't list the other hypocritical creeps. I think a boycott the movie industry, excluding anything Mr. Gibson may produce, definately the so-called music industry, those pillars of this society could use an awakening also. The if you hurt these hypocrites in the wallet they'll turn around and try and kiss up. A large sector of this society in this country is very ill, and has spread it around the US and I hope to God it isn't terminal. How do these losers look at themselves in the mirror without vomitting?

58. I THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD LEAVE MEL ALONE. IM PRETTY SURE THERE HAS BEEN TIMES THAT WE HAVE BEEN DRUNK AND SSID SOME HORRIBLE THINGS BUT LIKE ONE PERSON SAID BECAUSE WE ARE NOT FAMOUS IT DOESNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE. HOPEFULLY BABY SURI SURFACES AND ALL THE MEDIA ATTENTION WILL BE ON HER.

59. Would we still be hearing about this more than a week later if Mr. Gibson had
made disparaging remarks about afro-americans?
Just a question........

60. WHO IS ROB SCHNEIDER? IS HE SOME PORN CREEP? I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF HIM. MEL GIBSON WAS DRUNK, AND HAS SAID HE WAS SORRY. LEAVE THE MAN ALONE, HE HAS TO SUFFER THE PAIN OF WHAT HE SAID. AND I HAVE TO ADD THE INSIDER GUY, PAT O'BRIAN HAS HE FORGOTTEN A FEW YEARS AGO HOW DRUNK AND STUPID HE GOT. ARE ALL YOU NEGATIVE PERSONS ABOVE GOD, THAT YOU CAN NOT FORGIVE AND MOVE ON WITH YOUR SHALLOW LIVES.
