Inside Scientology's Biggest Night

John Travolta: Click to watchGather a group of Scientologists together for a party and they're going to talk about little else. Such was the case at the church's 37th Anniversary Gala, held at the Celebrity Centre in Los Angeles Saturday, with guests like Jenna Elfman, Leah Remini and Giovanni Ribisi gushing over the controversial religion.

Though Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were noticeably absent, Scientology power couple John Travolta and Kelly Preston were sure not to miss the annual event. "I've been a part of Celebrity Centre for 31 years this year," said Travolta, "so every year is a celebration for me because when I found Celebrity Centre I found my life again."

Travolta definitely enjoyed himself at this year's event and was seen breaking it down to the sounds of Chaka Khan, who was a guest performer.

31. Chaka Khan IS a scientologist. See the Washington Post 14.3.2000, she did the purification rundown. (In my google alerts version it was said she is one ("Chaka Khan, who is also a Scientologist"), and now, the article has been changed). Son Damien Patrick Holland is also a scientologist.

32. You have to have money to be a member of scientology, I have not heard of anyone without money being on their list??? It's all about money

33. I wouldn't call these people freaks because we all at one time or another in our lives seek the meaning of life. why are we here? where did we come from? So, they are not freaks, but they are lost and I pray for them. Having that much money and fame can make it more difficult to seek out and truly understand the truth---Which is.. John 3:15

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Scientology is a religion because "religion" is what man creates. Religion is a system of believing everything is OK if you just do enough good deeds or just try to be a good person or spend a lot of money buying a bunch of books and attending a bunch of seminars so you can achieve enlightenment.

And the truth is no one will ever be good enough, there is always going to be someone who has more money than you and there is always going to be someone who does more good deeds. So with "religion" were all screwed.

God and his son Jesus is not a religion, but it is the truth and if a person is willing to investigate REAL Christainity, it is the one thing that makes sense in this crazy world.

34. Scientology is no more weird than believing a person walked on water or rose from the dead. It's no more a cult than people who gather every Sunday and give money to ambiguous causes and talk about how to force their religion down other people's throats. I don't see them trying to force God and the bible down my throat via my kid's school or the courts. As for Lisa McPherson, I just read where a Pentacostal couple's kid got stung hundreds of times and they believed 'Jesus' would heal him so they refused med care and he died. Bottom line...all religion can be dangerous and it's all based on bizarre beliefs.

36. Thank you Jonathan Hackman. That is exactly right.
The clouds will part,
the trumpets will sound,
and they'll be left standing.

37. I don't think these people are hurting anyone. My mom used to always say go to church, any church but go to church. Believe in something, have faith in something. This is what these people believe in and more power to them. I really don't think anyone brain washes anyone to belong to this group. If someone wants to believe in Scientology it's their right. If someone wants to be involved in Scientology, they're there because they want to be there. No, I'm not a Scientologist but I do believe in freedom of religion. I think everyone is feeling some kind of negative feeling towards Scientology because of Tom Cruise.

43. Giovanni: "...for any denomination." Yeah, but if you are a Christian, tough beans! You have to believe that Jesus was a pedophile! Oh yeah...that totally goes hand in hand, huh?

Excerpt:

"For those of you whose Christian toes I may have stepped on, let me take the opportunity to disabuse you of some lovely myths. For instance, the historic Jesus was not nearly the sainted figure has been made out to be. In addition to being a lover of young boys and men, he was given to uncontrollable bursts of temper and hatred that belied the general message of love, understanding and other typical Marcab PR. You have only to look at the history his teachings inspired to see where it all inevitably leads. It is historic fact and yet man still clings to the ideal, so deep and insidious is the biologic implanting."
