Katie Says She Feels "Ripped Off"

Katie Couric says she still reels from the loss of her husband eight years ago, but feels lucky to have a "sorority house" at home to help get her through the tough times.

In an interview with Parade magazine that appears this Sunday, Couric says that she's "doing great" and that her daughters -- Ellie, 14, and Carrie, 9 -- are "thriving." And yet, says the soon-to-be anchor of the CBS Evening News, "when I see a father walking down the street with a little girl and holding her hand, my feeling of loss is palpable. I'm so envious. We were ripped off. I was ripped off, and that's all there is to it."

Even though she doesn't currently have a significant other, Couric tells Parade's Jacquelyn Mitchard that she has "a very full social life." But she admits that a little romance would be nice. "I would love to be married or in a really solid, committed relationship. I'd love that now. But [the right guy] just hasn't materialized."

And she realizes that sooner rather than later she'll have to introduce Ellie and Carrie to the world of men, given her distaff-heavy household. "I've started to think that it's important for my girls to realize there are some really nice, wonderful men out there, because we live in a bit of a sorority house here," says Couric. "Everyone in our house is female. Even the guinea pig is female."

18. I have no beef with Katie. I think her Today show contributions fit well with Al, Matt, and whoever else happened to appear. She is a pro and I think will do well on CBS. I don't really think her references to her husband's death are inappropriate. Yes, we all have lost loved ones, and yes, we mourn in our own way. If it helps her to mention those losses, let her be. She is a human with human emotions. I like her.

19. I lost my husband at 20, we had only been married for 14 months and had a baby on the way and I survived. I didn't have a house with a staff that allowed me the time to grieve. I had to go to work so I could take care of an infant that was born 3 weeks after his father died. Where is MY $60 million?

20. I love Katie Couric, that's why I won't be watching the TODAY show anymore. It won't be the same without her. Why Meredith? There must have been someone better to replace Katie. I will now be watching CBS evening news because of Katie. Good Luck Katie!!

21. Katie is right to feel ripped off by not having her husband there to do all the things fathers can do with their children. There is the other death, divorce which is also tragic and robbing. I've heard that Katie is good with a dollar so I don't think some guy is going to sway her and cheat on her.

22. You know, I like and admire her for how she worked hard for what she has and what she's done so far. However, we all have losses in our life, some more than others. She has had sooo much good, she is just going to have to take some bad with it.

24. I've walked in her shoes. I know exactly what she means about that "ripped off" feeling. Ask anyone who has lost their husband or their only child if any amount of money could ever compensate them for the loss.

25. What cynical people. Katie does have a blessed
life but give her a break she loved her husband
and her sister whom also died very young from
cancer. None of us go through life unscafthed
but for goodness sake she is talking from her
heart about her losses and you are going to
fault her for that. Shame on you! I wish her all
the luck in the world and I think its great that
she has been that sucessful. We are all
not on a level playing field but that doesn't
mean we are incapable of playing ball. Pull
yourself up and do something positive.

26. Cindy: Instead of being pregnant with a baby on the way at 20, Katie was studying for the career that has earned her what the market will pay: $60 million. Maybe you should have made different choices at 20.

27. It's a shame that Katie lost her husband. But how about rather than feel sorry for herself when she sees a Daddy with a daughter, she look at her own daughters and realize how blessed she is to have them. There are a lot of women out there who have no husband and no children either.

29. I doubt this web site has an "agreement" with Parade. Maybe they just have good PR people who send out the articles to get publicity. Either way, someone must be doing something right since we're all up on the boards talking about it! Katie seems like a nice woman and sounds genuinely sad talking about her husband. I look forward to watching her on CBS.

30. Since Katie left the Today Show I've actually started tuning in. She was an egomaniac who insisted on showing off her legs every chance she got. She was way over paid for the job she did and can't wait to see her CBS stint blow up in her face. Network news is sooooooooo over. My parents are 80 and they don't even get their news from the networks. I agree with an earlier comment-"now if we could just get rid of Ann Curry". And losing Diane Sawyer on GMA would make me happy too. I'm so sick of her feigned shock over everything-"I'm stunned!!!!"
