Though the general public is now fully privy to Tom Cruise's penchant for bizarre behavior, the late baseball great Joe DiMaggio may have been one of the first to know.

A report this morning suggests that the actor followed Joltin' Joe all over the place, spooking him and nearly prompting him to call the cops.

In the mid-'90s, when Cruise had already ascended to the top of the Tinseltown heap, he would, according to a source cited by Rush & Molloy, show up unbidden at baseball-signing shows and wait for DiMaggio to appear, and even waited outside a restaurant for him once for three hours. But the famous Yankee – once married to Marilyn Monroe – wasn't impressed, and instead, according to the source, referred to Cruise as "a short little guy" who scared him a little. "This guy is following me around everywhere I go," said DiMaggio to R&M's source. "Next time, I'm going to call the cops."

Cruise's reps didn't respond to the story, and it's perfectly possible that Tom was trying to get DiMaggio's story made into a film: The "Mission: Impossible" star and father of Suri has been known to go to great lengths to get projects made, like showing up on a motorcycle in the middle of the night at director JJ Abrams' house to convince him to direct "M:I-3."

Couric Gives "Peace Out, Homies" a Spin for Sign-Off

Katie Couric heard the people on her six-city "listening tour" of the country and her potential audience, and what they want, she says, is a longer newscast. "Every time people said that, I would tell them, 'as Dan Rather would say, that dog won't hunt," said Couric yesterday to reporters in advance of her Sept. 5 debut on the CBS Evening News.

As for her wardrobe, Couric says it's "not a big part [of the planning process]" and that she wants to dress "professionally and appropriately," though she certainly has "a little less leeway on my clothing choices." The prep for the newscast kicks into high gear on Friday, when the new set is ready and rehearsals can begin.

And then there's the all-important sign-off. "I contemplated 'Peace out, homies,'" joked Couric. "That just didn't feel completely right." One option she's not likely to choose is Dan Rather's much-disparaged "Courage." And, apparently, everyone and her mother is providing suggestions.

Elton John's "Fantastic" Life Includes "Captain" Follow-Up

A release date has been set for Elton John's next album, a sequel of sorts to 1975's "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy," the "Sgt. Peppers"-ish concept album that told the story of Sir Elton's and his longtime musical collaborator Bernie Taupin's meandering path to success. "The Captain and The Kid" will be out Sept. 19, and a North American tour supporting the album will begin Sept. 15 in Sacramento.

As the 59-year-old legend recalls it, the new album emanated partially from his and Taupin's gradual transformation into the two characters of the original album from thirty years ago, with Elton becoming the Captain and Taupin, with his dusty ranch in California, more of the "Brown Dirt Cowboy." And now, sober and focused, Elton is living what he calls "a fantastic life," with multiple projects and obligations filling up his calendar.

Goodie Bag: Lauer and Wife Expecting, Ping-Pong Huge With Stars, and There Goes That Crazy Andy Dick Again

Matt Lauer and his wife Annette Roque are expecting their third baby, according to the New York Times magazine. The couple already have two kids, Jack, 5, and Romy, 2 ... Owen Wilson, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey are just some of the celebs who can't get enough of Ping-Pong, say Rush & Molloy. Spacey doesn't ask for very much on his contracts, but he does ask for a Ping-Pong table in his hotel room ... Andy Dick was up to his usual antics at the Comedy Central roast of William Shatner Sunday night, licking faces and causing all kinds of mayhem with gossip reporters, as Page Six's Mandy Stadtmiller found out firsthand.

16. I am a therapist with a Master of Science in Counseling, am about to become licensed professional counselor, and will begin soon with my doctorate in Counseling Psychology. I preface my comment with this ONLY to state that I do have some expertise in human behavior...

I truly believe this cult is very dangerous. She is definately "reprogrammed," as evidenced by total separation from "before Scientology" life, a CoS "minder," and hell -- just look at her photos. She isn't herself anymore.

I am all for tolerance and acceptance, and I do not judge. However, I really believe this girl's life is at stake, as well as the new life she brought into this cult. My prayers are with her and her family.

Tom Cruise... well, I always loved him as an actor. I'm sure the allure of CoS is the fact he has so much control. I'm suprised Nicole made it out relatively unscathed.

17. I like Tom Cruise and have enjoyed his films and think he's an excellent actor. This petty back biting is pointless. Tom is laughing at everyone all the way to the bank. He's got the last laugh on everyone.

18. Hey Tom,

Does the closet you live in lock from the inside?

19. Yes, Tom's behavior might be questionable, I can't imagine what it is like to be in his shoes. Maybe there is a damn good reason that Suri's photo's haven't surfaced yet. Everyone needs to get a grip and let Tom, Katie and Suri have some time to deal with what ever it is that's going on in their world, that they are obviously not ready to share . A word of wisdom to Tom, if something is wrong with the baby, you know it will eventually come out, why postone the inevitable, just get it out in the open, most people are understanding, it's the not knowing that feeds the ugly speculations. No matter what , tell Katie to keep smiling, especially when the hounds are around, make sure all pics show you happy and smiling. Remember Princess Di ?, she always found a way to smile, even when the pain was as deep as it could get. Okay , now a few words to the world, please give the Cruise's a little space , they obviously need it. Have a great day.

20. I agree with Gay Guy:
Cruise is turning into the new Michael Jackson. People stopped writing about his music about 15 years ago when his weird behavior became the most interesting thing about him. Cruise is headed down the Wacko Jacko path fast!

21. Hey #15, haven't you heard the news Tom's paychecks are taking a big cut? I'm sure he thinks this is really funny!

22. Why is Tom Cruise the top news story?

Does anyone at TMZ know that Kate Hudson and her hubby have split? I thought they'd be all over that one but no, just more about Tom Crap or is the Tom Kat?

23. Why is it that when Tom has some good press, (He and Katie helping at the car accident the other day) TMZ feels the need to bad mouth him?

Tom has moments of being a little odd just like we all do.
So get over it all ready.

24. No baseball fan? The War of the Worlds scene - he can play. He has always been into sports. But that's not the point - he is nuts. Katie Holmes and her family should have realized her crush was at 13, not at a time she is going to have his kids - within a yr. of getting together. Not a bad actor, and overall artist - at least he cares about his work unlike a lot of others, and probably is a decent guy. But still a bit off, too animated times 10 fold. The Oprah show destroyed him.

25. you people act like you know tom cruise. you judge him and put him down. don't you guys realize that you only know what the press wants you to know.
get a life and let these people alone. they are actors not perfect human beings put on display for you to judge. you have a job, how would you like it if people followed you all day, wrote things about you. well acting is their job, and after that it's their life. if it does not affect you then let it go. stop judging......accept people for who they are.

26. Tom - You are weird

27. Me personally, I don't care how many couches he jumps on, or if I ever see a picture of Suri. BUT, when he began the all out assault of cramming Scientology down the throats of millions of people, MY switch turned OFF quick and Im no fan of any organized religion.

28. Hey, #13-Gay Guy--

Your comments about Tom were right on the money, honey! By the time Tom and Katie reached the level of being a nauseating couple, no one was interested in his MI3 movie or in anything he had to say. Compared to Mel, Tom's situation is really a slow downward spiral. People are not liking Tom as much any more. People used to like Tom, but now he's really annoying and obnoxious.

29. hey some call it persistance, some call it psycho. Tom still has more money than most of us

30. LET'S FACE IT, TOM DOES WHAT HE HAS TO DO. AS FAR AS kATEY,
ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN HER ON A TALK SHOW KNOWS THAT THE
GIRL HAS A HARD TIME PUTTING A SENTENCE TOGETHER WITHOUT
A SCRIPT. LIKE WHEN LETTERMAN ASKED HER "IF YOU COULD ONLY GO
TO YOUR MOVIE OR TOM'S, WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?" SHE SAID,
"I'LL STICK BY MY MAN" DUH!? SHE WAS THERE TO HAWK HER OWN MOVIE.
