Lets Get This Party Started

Though the general public is now fully privy to Tom Cruise's penchant for bizarre behavior, the late baseball great Joe DiMaggio may have been one of the first to know.

A report this morning suggests that the actor followed Joltin' Joe all over the place, spooking him and nearly prompting him to call the cops.

In the mid-'90s, when Cruise had already ascended to the top of the Tinseltown heap, he would, according to a source cited by Rush & Molloy, show up unbidden at baseball-signing shows and wait for DiMaggio to appear, and even waited outside a restaurant for him once for three hours. But the famous Yankee – once married to Marilyn Monroe – wasn't impressed, and instead, according to the source, referred to Cruise as "a short little guy" who scared him a little. "This guy is following me around everywhere I go," said DiMaggio to R&M's source. "Next time, I'm going to call the cops."

Cruise's reps didn't respond to the story, and it's perfectly possible that Tom was trying to get DiMaggio's story made into a film: The "Mission: Impossible" star and father of Suri has been known to go to great lengths to get projects made, like showing up on a motorcycle in the middle of the night at director JJ Abrams' house to convince him to direct "M:I-3."

Couric Gives "Peace Out, Homies" a Spin for Sign-Off

Katie Couric heard the people on her six-city "listening tour" of the country and her potential audience, and what they want, she says, is a longer newscast. "Every time people said that, I would tell them, 'as Dan Rather would say, that dog won't hunt," said Couric yesterday to reporters in advance of her Sept. 5 debut on the CBS Evening News.

As for her wardrobe, Couric says it's "not a big part [of the planning process]" and that she wants to dress "professionally and appropriately," though she certainly has "a little less leeway on my clothing choices." The prep for the newscast kicks into high gear on Friday, when the new set is ready and rehearsals can begin.

And then there's the all-important sign-off. "I contemplated 'Peace out, homies,'" joked Couric. "That just didn't feel completely right." One option she's not likely to choose is Dan Rather's much-disparaged "Courage." And, apparently, everyone and her mother is providing suggestions.

Elton John's "Fantastic" Life Includes "Captain" Follow-Up

A release date has been set for Elton John's next album, a sequel of sorts to 1975's "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy," the "Sgt. Peppers"-ish concept album that told the story of Sir Elton's and his longtime musical collaborator Bernie Taupin's meandering path to success. "The Captain and The Kid" will be out Sept. 19, and a North American tour supporting the album will begin Sept. 15 in Sacramento.

As the 59-year-old legend recalls it, the new album emanated partially from his and Taupin's gradual transformation into the two characters of the original album from thirty years ago, with Elton becoming the Captain and Taupin, with his dusty ranch in California, more of the "Brown Dirt Cowboy." And now, sober and focused, Elton is living what he calls "a fantastic life," with multiple projects and obligations filling up his calendar.

Goodie Bag: Lauer and Wife Expecting, Ping-Pong Huge With Stars, and There Goes That Crazy Andy Dick Again

Matt Lauer and his wife Annette Roque are expecting their third baby, according to the New York Times magazine. The couple already have two kids, Jack, 5, and Romy, 2 ... Owen Wilson, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey are just some of the celebs who can't get enough of Ping-Pong, say Rush & Molloy. Spacey doesn't ask for very much on his contracts, but he does ask for a Ping-Pong table in his hotel room ... Andy Dick was up to his usual antics at the Comedy Central roast of William Shatner Sunday night, licking faces and causing all kinds of mayhem with gossip reporters, as Page Six's Mandy Stadtmiller found out firsthand.

91. That is scary if true, however that picture does not look like Tom Cruise. Why does the media even post things until they have them verified.

92. Will you get a life,,, He was in love and happy,,, geez, he was just being excited,,, nothing that anyone, that is in love, feels,,, nothing weird here,,, He does not get into trouble, is a happy person and good to his fans, will stay to sign a thousand autographs, if needed, until they are ALL signed and havent heard about any drug problems or the like. A decent fellow. Hollywood needs more like him instead of the rude ones that think they are superior to their fans, shunning the very people that put them where they are today. Second, quite frankly, it isn't anyone's business what his child looks like. He and Nichole didn't show pictures of their other kids either. The press is dying to dig up ANYTHING on him and it just isnt there. He doesnt give a flip what the press or you non fans think about him. He is secure with himself and his choices. I applaud him for being true to himself.

94. It's sad when someone who is supposedly a big star gets all his press for his non-acting life. When your religion, girlfriend, ex wife, idiotic behavior, etc become more newsworthy than your next film, it's time to take another look at where you are in life.

95. The bigger question is...who the hell cares? I don't care who's belching on film, who they're doing, what they're wearing or what number divorce or marriage they're on. I think most Americans, or at least I hope, are paying attention the larger questions, like who lost their life in Iraq today, or when is the nit-wit in the White House going to get the boot?

96. I am curious to know,, did ANYONE witness the birth of baby Suri by katie in the hosp,,, or is this some kind of stunt paid by Tom until he can actually get a real baby to show off as his own.. I can;t understand why hes hiding the baby even from his and Katies closest friends. Hes just plain wierd !! Why does Katie put up with it... I hope she comes to her senses before the wedding and gets away from him....

98. Big deal. I hear Tom is always friendly to fans. I read that he and Katie pulled over on an LA Freeway to help accident victims. That says that he's a down to earth man. I lived in Los Angeles for my first 40 years and I would call 911 first. We moved to he South eleven years. We could stop to help people then but now I would call 911 here. He's a better person than I am for trusting. He deserves respect for being so caring. As for Suri, I don't blame them for protecting her. He's no different than any other parent. Just because he's a star doesn't mean we own him. Frankly, I love his energy. Katie seems to be much the same. I have read that he has a learning disability, not knowing if it's true. I have twelve year old twins that have disabilities and they are always happy. I pray that they can find a profession that keeps them safe and happy. Leave Tom alone-he pays his own way and happiness can be contagious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Old Joe may have just been a little paranoid. I have met many stars growing up in LA. Most of them have been friendly. We waited at CBS to meet David Letterman and he acted like he knew us. My 21 year old was a kid at the time and she has always loved Dave. He took pictures, shook my hubbys hand and asked my daughter about the three little ones (in strollers-). I have heard that he is very private but he made her day. It's obvious now that he enjoyed children. He is so fun to watch now that little Harry is in his life. Dave was silly before but now he has a great teacher-Harry. It boils down to the same life experience we all share. Our children keep us young, silly and happy. The stars are blessed with a job they love and earning a good living. Taht would be the best part. Just imagine not having to worry about medical, housing and a roof over your head. Those are the main struggles in life. Later on it's college. I wish I would have been able to help my chidlren thru college. Our two older ones are working and it's taking them forever to go to school. I think that is why the public is envious of all famous people. Let's just be happy that someone is able to have it all.

100. Tom Cruise walked past me once in LA and I swear the guy is like 5'2". And once you've lived in LA for just a year, you will hear several more strange stories about him. The tabloids for the most part are just printing what happens.

101. I think this is just stupid. Why has DiMaggio decided to tell the story now? Seems very suspicious. The media is blowing everything out of proportion. It seems that if even I said something random like "Tom Cruise was convincing me to buy chips today", you people would believe me.

102. Cruise is a nut but Dimaggio's the bigger freak here. James is right. No creedence to this story at all.....

103. Way to go sleeze bag Harvey, an unnamed source cited by Rush & Molloy. In your previous career as a lawyer, did you use unnamed witness' or evidence. Just curious.

105. Tom Cruise is an "Arrogant Little Punk" He is so puffed up with his importance that he will go to any lengths to try to force people to be on his band wagon, if they don't see things through his distorted vision, he disses them. The Brook Shields thing was a perfect example. I once made the mistake of delving into Scientology, I put the breaks on fast when I had a face to face conversation with one of their high lamas..... WARPED, TWISTED, SELF ORDAINED LITTLE WANNABES. TOM IS A PERFECT CANDIDATE FOR THAT ORGANIZATION.
