It's Hard Out Here for an "Idol"

With "American Idol" auditions already underway for next season, TMZ is checking in with some of the winners and contestants from past seasons. While some are seeing continued success (Jennifer Hudson getting cast in "Dreamgirls" alongside Beyoncé for one) others seem to be hitting a few road bumps in their post-"Idol" careers.

Justin GuariniJustin Guarini: The Season One runner-up has had a hard time getting out of Kelly Clarkson's shadow and his most recent gig only almost solidifies his non-star status. On Sunday the curly-haired crooner hosted a karaoke event at Trump Marina in Atlantic City and here's the real kicker -- the tickets sold for a disappointing $10 each. That's not quite the $40 Clarkson gets per audience member for her recently-finished worldwide concert tour.

: The Guarini look-a-like has also had his own trouble launching his career after opting to leave "Idol" in its forth season. The singer has been doing a mall tour, ick, all summer with the likes of ex-O-Town member Ashley Parker Angel and one hit wonder Fefe Dobson. To his credit, his new single "Gallery" has been in heavy rotation on the East Coast and hovers at #59 on the iTunes Top Songs list but has yet to break big in LA. His new album will hit stores September 12th.

Clay AikenClay Aiken: While Aiken's first CD was a triple platinum success, it's his personal life that's been getting the most negative attention lately. Just last week an author of an "unauthorized tribute" to the Season Two runner-up filed suit against Aiken saying he and his mother tried to defame her. While Aiken denies the allegations, the lawsuit seeks at least $260,000 in damages and asks the court to order Aiken to write a positive introduction for the book and to sell the book at his concerts for at least five years.

And adding insult to injury, Aiken's song "Invisible" was also listed at #11 as one of the worst songs in history by Blender magazine.

Katharine McPhee & Taylor HicksTaylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee: Even the top two from the most recent season are already experiencing the "Idol" curse. Winner Taylor Hicks was recently blasted by Justin Timberlake, who said the grey-haired singer "can't carry a tune in a bucket." Runner-up Katharine McPhee has also had a string of bad luck as well. Laryngitis and bronchitis kept her from the first leg of the "American Idol" tour, she recently revealed that she had once struggled with bulimia and just two weeks ago, she fractured on her left foot while performing. Ouch!

16. Who likes Idol?

...those of us who don't have cable.

17. I don't think it's fair to lump Mario Vasquez in with these other guys. He hasn't had the benefit of winning or coming in second place to help get his foot in the door. He dropped out before competition even started and he was favored to win. I think he will do just fine - the gigs he's gotten are very good considering the circumstances.

18. For someone "who can't carry a tune in a bucket", Taylor's gig with his original band from Birmingham at the Viper Room is a sold out show. There must be a few people in the L.A. area who like him, unlike Justin Timberlake, "Mr. Boy Band frieak."

19. I don't know why everyone is getting so bent out of shape about American Idol. It is funny and fun, took me a few years to get into it - but it is time to stop judging talent by the performer's personal life. And it is time for performers to stop using their personal issues to get attention. Is the music good or not? I used to suffer from bulimia but I don't put it on my resume!

20. Talent can come from anywhere. Just because someone is on AI doesn't mean they're not talented. It's hard to make it out there, AI is just one method.

All kinds of people watch AI. One girl I work with has the most active social life I have seen and she is crazy about the show.

Why be so judgemental?

21. Be sure to AVOID Fantasia Barrino's unnecessary Lifetime TV life story movie-of-the-week, 'The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not A Fairy Tale'. A marginally successful, mediocre personality such as Barrino isn't worthy of a 2 hour block of prime programming time.

25. I agree that Kelly & Rubin are the best so far. They both have wonderful voices to listen to. The only thing with rubin is that he lacks Clarkson's versatility (who doesn't!).

27. Dear TMZ
Would you like me to send you a copy of my $100 ticket for Justin Guarini's first solo concert at the Commerce Bank Arts Center in Sewell New Jersey on September 29th. so that you can post it here too?
Tickets are on sale at TicketMaster if you want to come.
I really resent your unduly biased negative and hateful take on what Justin Guarini has been doing.
His fans are VERY excited about his upcoming concert and they will be flying in from all over the country and canada to see him perform. The $100 dollar seats are already being bought and they haven't even started advertising it yet.

If you would do a little research and not just spew the same tired old uninformed preconceived notions, you would know that Justin is doing very well thank you very much. His second cd "Stranger Things Have Happened" is a critically aclaimed, wonderful cd filled with classic smooth jazz songs, sung beautifully and from the heart, by Justin. He also independently released the cd and produced it as well.
Justin is about to release the single from his 3rd cd and fans can hardly wait to hear it. Justin has never looked or sounded better.
Justin has also recorded a hymn for H.H Cealo, a buddist monk involved with charities in Asia. Justin was specially chosen by Cealo because of the purity of his heart, and his incredible talent, to compose the music and sing the hymn, and it is absolutely beautiful!

Justin has also composed the music, lyrics , produced and performed the song "Everlasting" for a documentary film series on the secrets of long standing happy marriages
Justin is also scheduled to begin shooting on the film Mafioso the Son, with acclaimed director Sal Mazzotta, and will be following that up starring as a young doctor in the next movie in that series.
So dear TMZ. Please aquaint yourself with what Justin is really doing by looking at his www.justinguarini.com site.
And when you go to the site, check out the fan boards, listen to the videos of Justin performing, and even you will have to see that yes, Justin IS incredibly talented. He IS a star and his fans LOVE him!
Thank you very much!

28. If someone you know is cool but still watches idol, then it coul be

temporary insanity
curiosity
the trainwreck entertainment factor
brain candy to decompress from work

But if your friend says that those people sure are talented, the cool status no longer applies to your friend.
