It's Hard Out Here for an "Idol"

With "American Idol" auditions already underway for next season, TMZ is checking in with some of the winners and contestants from past seasons. While some are seeing continued success (Jennifer Hudson getting cast in "Dreamgirls" alongside Beyoncé for one) others seem to be hitting a few road bumps in their post-"Idol" careers.

Justin GuariniJustin Guarini: The Season One runner-up has had a hard time getting out of Kelly Clarkson's shadow and his most recent gig only almost solidifies his non-star status. On Sunday the curly-haired crooner hosted a karaoke event at Trump Marina in Atlantic City and here's the real kicker -- the tickets sold for a disappointing $10 each. That's not quite the $40 Clarkson gets per audience member for her recently-finished worldwide concert tour.

: The Guarini look-a-like has also had his own trouble launching his career after opting to leave "Idol" in its forth season. The singer has been doing a mall tour, ick, all summer with the likes of ex-O-Town member Ashley Parker Angel and one hit wonder Fefe Dobson. To his credit, his new single "Gallery" has been in heavy rotation on the East Coast and hovers at #59 on the iTunes Top Songs list but has yet to break big in LA. His new album will hit stores September 12th.

Clay AikenClay Aiken: While Aiken's first CD was a triple platinum success, it's his personal life that's been getting the most negative attention lately. Just last week an author of an "unauthorized tribute" to the Season Two runner-up filed suit against Aiken saying he and his mother tried to defame her. While Aiken denies the allegations, the lawsuit seeks at least $260,000 in damages and asks the court to order Aiken to write a positive introduction for the book and to sell the book at his concerts for at least five years.

And adding insult to injury, Aiken's song "Invisible" was also listed at #11 as one of the worst songs in history by Blender magazine.

Katharine McPhee & Taylor HicksTaylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee: Even the top two from the most recent season are already experiencing the "Idol" curse. Winner Taylor Hicks was recently blasted by Justin Timberlake, who said the grey-haired singer "can't carry a tune in a bucket." Runner-up Katharine McPhee has also had a string of bad luck as well. Laryngitis and bronchitis kept her from the first leg of the "American Idol" tour, she recently revealed that she had once struggled with bulimia and just two weeks ago, she fractured on her left foot while performing. Ouch!

47. Kelly Clarkson is finally shedding her "goody-two-shoes" image, as anyone who was at the "Metal Skool" show at the Key Club on the Sunset Strip on Monday noght will attest to. She swgged scotch straight from the bottle on stage and threw devil horns at the audience while she sang hair band songs from the 80s with the stars of the show. The audience loved it!

49. Why does Justin despise American Idol? There have been alot of great performers on that show including Taylor Hicks. Millions of people tune in to idol every week. i wonder if that many people tuned in to see Justin when he got his start on the MICKEY MOUSE CLUB!! Talk about a GOOFY show!!

50. Justin TImberlake has a LOT of nerve, talking about how "fabricated" American Idol is, Uh, Hello.....MR. Ex Mouseketeer, handpicked by a pedophile, slapped into a Boy Band ( which is so not a formula) WOW! JT is showing the world what an arrogant dick he really is - on top of it, his not so veiled attempt to OUT Taylor Hicks was a pathetic jab. DOWN Mr. Timberlake! I don't think the Hicks is all that great, frankly I thought Elliot should have won- but your jealousy is soooooo showing and telling.

Stick to bagging the old broad, dude, your new song sucks too!

51. LONG AND SHORT OF AI IS THAT THE WINNERS WON BECAUSE THEY WERE POPULAR WITH THE FANS. KELLY CLARKSON IS THE QUEEN OF TALENT.... TAYLOR HICKS IS THE KING OF SHOWMANSHIP. THIS SEASON'S RUNNERS UP COULD ALL HAVE WON ON TALENT--BUT TAYLOR WON BY POPULARITY. HE'S FUN TO WATCH AND IF YOU DON'T THINK HIS VOCALS ARE ANY GOOD, TRY TO CAPTURE THE RANGE BY SINGING "DO I MAKE YOU PROUD" YOURSELF. YOU'LL DISCOVER IT'S NOT AS EASY AS ITAYLOR MAKES IT SOUND. TAYLOR WASN'T MY PICK--BUT I CERTAINLY THINK HE DESERVES TO WIN!

I LOVE THE SHOW AND I HOPE THE TALENTED "CASTAWAYS" CAN COMPETE AGAIN. ELLIOTT, I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR YOUR RECORDING!!! HURRY UP!

52. American Idol means different things to different people. To me, it's a chance for my teen daughter and I to agree on something! Taylor is an entire package - he sings (better than most, maybe all, of the critics) and he entertains and makes people smile. That's what it's all about - entertainment. 30 million plus is way more people than I could draw - or you - or maybe even Timberlake. Is he afraid Taylor will show him up? He isn't very professional to bash someone like that, that's just rude and unethical in their business (or any business or industry). To the AI bashers - get off these news sites - and go get yourself a $650,000 home and advertise for Ford, and have a #1 hit, and find someone interested in writing a book about you, and get on Jay Leno and all the other talk shows (what? they don't want you?). Hey, AI bashers, green doesn't look good on you. Why don't you tell us what you watch on TV? I'll give you my opinion.

53. Justin Timberlake sings like a little girl. If I were Taylor Hicks, I wouldn't even respond to Justin's immature comments. He's not worth the time. TAYLOR HICKS is one of the best that American Idol has ever seen!

54. As to Clay Aiken, I guess then I fit anyone of the negative descriptions of him 'cause I love his voice and....his new hairstyle and when he came out as a special guest on the last night of American Idol, he and his voice, took my breath away.
To the poster with all the negative vibes going on, that suits me fine 'cause I don't care what you say about Clay Aiken's fans. If you believe that Clay Aiken can't sing? all I can say is....ever heard of a person being tone-deaf?
He's got talent and those in the music biz, know that and recognize it.

55. Well, #5, there's at least one homo who doesn't fit your category. I wouldn't be caught dead watching that glorified karaoke waste of time show. It demeans true musical artistry by association; and I can't believe that a country which could give birth to Rock and Motown could possibly generate enough knuckle draggers to give life to such a show all these years.

60. IMO Clarkson and Underwood have been the only two performers that had that something "extra" - stardust quality. Those two are the most talented singers to ever have been on Idol. You can go to any black church and find a fantasia. There isn't anything special about her. Taylor is bland as oatmeal. McPhee wants to act really. Rubin=dull , dull, dull. Clay has a great voice , the package it comes in is just not viable commercially in todays market.

I think Hudson and Daughtry will benefit greatly by not being saddled with the title "AI" or runner up. They got the exposure but not a big dose of stigma.
