It's Hard Out Here for an "Idol"

With "American Idol" auditions already underway for next season, TMZ is checking in with some of the winners and contestants from past seasons. While some are seeing continued success (Jennifer Hudson getting cast in "Dreamgirls" alongside Beyoncé for one) others seem to be hitting a few road bumps in their post-"Idol" careers.

Justin GuariniJustin Guarini: The Season One runner-up has had a hard time getting out of Kelly Clarkson's shadow and his most recent gig only almost solidifies his non-star status. On Sunday the curly-haired crooner hosted a karaoke event at Trump Marina in Atlantic City and here's the real kicker -- the tickets sold for a disappointing $10 each. That's not quite the $40 Clarkson gets per audience member for her recently-finished worldwide concert tour.

: The Guarini look-a-like has also had his own trouble launching his career after opting to leave "Idol" in its forth season. The singer has been doing a mall tour, ick, all summer with the likes of ex-O-Town member Ashley Parker Angel and one hit wonder Fefe Dobson. To his credit, his new single "Gallery" has been in heavy rotation on the East Coast and hovers at #59 on the iTunes Top Songs list but has yet to break big in LA. His new album will hit stores September 12th.

Clay AikenClay Aiken: While Aiken's first CD was a triple platinum success, it's his personal life that's been getting the most negative attention lately. Just last week an author of an "unauthorized tribute" to the Season Two runner-up filed suit against Aiken saying he and his mother tried to defame her. While Aiken denies the allegations, the lawsuit seeks at least $260,000 in damages and asks the court to order Aiken to write a positive introduction for the book and to sell the book at his concerts for at least five years.

And adding insult to injury, Aiken's song "Invisible" was also listed at #11 as one of the worst songs in history by Blender magazine.

Katharine McPhee & Taylor HicksTaylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee: Even the top two from the most recent season are already experiencing the "Idol" curse. Winner Taylor Hicks was recently blasted by Justin Timberlake, who said the grey-haired singer "can't carry a tune in a bucket." Runner-up Katharine McPhee has also had a string of bad luck as well. Laryngitis and bronchitis kept her from the first leg of the "American Idol" tour, she recently revealed that she had once struggled with bulimia and just two weeks ago, she fractured on her left foot while performing. Ouch!

76. A confident, Secure artist respects the work of all other artists - any REAL musician knows that. Justin Timberlake was way off base with those comments about Hicks. I don't even like Hicks, but I respect the fact that he hasn't lowered himself by attacking Justin's wimpy voice.

Hey Justin... maybe a few singing lessons from Aguilera would help beef up this new album you got. Maybe this way, you won't have to hide behind a vocoder or whatever the hell it is he used to mutilate his voice in "sexyback".

77. Taylor Hicks has two previously produced CDs with many original songs...you should take a listen--come on, open your ears and try "In Your Time" and "Under the Radar." Then come back and tell us what you think. He is an excellent song writer with a "sand on silk" voice ( to borrow a phrase) ,distinctive beyond pop-tart music culture. That is what his fans respond to, as well as his all out performance style (picture him on his knees, wailing on his harmonica, among roses tossed to the stage by fans).
AND THEN!...add his band, The Little Memphis Blues Orchestra, the rockin'est
group of musicians to hit the stage in a long time, and you have PURE MAGIC!
They are amazingly in tune with each other, each drawing out the others' finest talents. They leave me breathless.....Long live Taylor Hicks! SOUL Patrol!!!

78. #10 I agree Taylor Hicks' is crappy! He competes with Clay Aiken when it comes to Corny white dudes who think they are soul singers.

79. Kelly Clarkson is HOT!

80. #45:
Who do u think is hotter?

Kelly or Carrie?

I have to say Carrie, But Kelly is hot because she has a sexy voice.......Man I don't know!

81. why are u talking about Justin Timberlake??

1. he sucks
2. he's off topic here!
3. u are saying the same things about him since p.3

This list of post-idols who are not successful is not even complete. where's Ruben Studdard?? the man was the winner but cant even beat the CD sales of the runner-up!! i mean, the article said it : Clay Aiken's album went platinium for 3 weeks. now, if that's not success, then i dont know what success is.
So what about Ruben now? his CD will be released sometime in September and we dont even hear from him! i bet a LOOOOOOT of people are anticipating his CD -_-

Clay Aiken... well... what can I say about him? his personal life is not great lately since the gay scandal that im sure is a bunch of bullshit. every singer faces that kind of bad stuff during his career, so that blow was so typical! and then this woman suing him... why, that's ridiculous! it was an unauthorized biography to begin with...im suprised it's not Clay who is suing HER. and then the Invisible song... man, get over it! he didnt even write it!!! so u see, those people who seek to defame Clay should get a life. their excuses are pitiful.

im not crazy about american idol, but i dont think it's a programm for losers neither. people have right to like stuff without being insulted or categorized. so the guy who did the category thing... geez, who's the real loser there?

82. I have to wonder why so many people seem to be over the top about who they like and who they don't like. I have over 2,000 CDs, and that collection includes everything from the Stones to India.Arie to Leo Kottke to Miles Davis and Patty Griffin. Oh, and it also includes Ruben, Clay and Kelly, whom I consider to be talented interpretive singers.

People are diverse; most like many different types of music, different bands and artists. There is nothing wrong with likeing Justin, or Mario, or Taylor either.

To each their own. Let people be.

83. All you people who say you hate American Idol just think you're too cool for school!
And the only people who really think Clay Aiken is gay are people with a hidden agenda and the gay people themselves who desperately want him to be.

84. Idol is for people who only like sanitized, cheezeball versions of REAL music because they are too tone deaf, or too lazy to find out what REAL music is for themselves and like their musical taste spoon-fed to them. Basically DORKS, OLD people who want to be hip, and.......Flaming Douchbags! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Kelly Clarkson is hot!
"Break Away"?...........I want to break her off!

Posted at 12:50PM on Aug 17th 2006 by Stanley Turner

85. Taylor Hicks will far outsell any idol to date. He's got the "it" factor - no doubt about it. Have people listened to Hicks original music - not what was forced on him by Idol? Please, people. Listen before you speak. Taylor will be around for a long, long time. Let's get rid of the crap music we are hearing today - Taylor will change the music industry - just wait and see!

87. This is the best you can do on updating info on Clay Aiken?!?! Come on! You allude to a legal fight that's not even worth mentioning. Just some crazy trying to make $$ off Clay's fame. Then you mention some obscure listing where one of his songs wound up--that no one would even care about. WHY NOT mention all the great things Clay has been doing with his Bubel-Aiken Fundation and as Ambassador for Unicef? WHY NOT mention the media attention Clay got on the finale of AI5 with his new great hot look? WHY NOT mention Clay's upcoming new CD, "A Thousand Different Way" that will hit on 9/19 and getting everyone ready for the media blitz that's going to hit? Clay will be everywhre. Get a clue!

88. As a matter of fact, they said that about Clay too. Clay's got the X-factor, the article said. And he will change the music industry. and u kow what, that's true. he's doing it. doing it right now. i dont know Taylor, i never listened to his songs, but if he's like Clay, then i encourage him to continue!
it's time our radios get rid of the crap songs.

89. Kelly Clarkson is obviously a huge hit.
Ruben Studdard has sold Millions on the R&B charts. (Even thought I don't listen to him, it's a fact)
Carrie Underwood has won CMA's and GRAMMY's already. and she's extremely talented(Even though I also am not a huge country fan)

I agree that most of the people who VOTE on American Idol are teens but most of the winners have talent.

Now....Taylor hicks and that trampy Katherine(dating a 41 year old)...??? They both belong singing on a cruise ship somewhere.

They won because teens and old people were doing the voting.
Chris Daughtry will be the bigger success story. Period.

90. Idol is a marketing exercise. Thank you for making me rich. It has nothign to do with good music or talent. Glad that you enjoy watching it.
