The Young & The Restless & The Jewish

Don DiamontTaking a cue from Lance Bass, Brad Carlton, a character on the CBS soap opera "The Young and the Restless," has come out too. Only he's not gay. He's Jewish!

Earlier this month the show's writers revealed that Carlton is really George Kaplan - the son of a WWII concentration camp survivor.

Don Diamont who has played Carlton for 19 years couldn't be happier with the revelation. You see Diamont, who was born with the last name Feinberg, is also Jewish.

Diamont hopes this latest plot development doesn't turn away fans, but instead helps make them more open-minded.

For a soap opera that has tackled social issues like abortion, AIDS, interracial romances and homosexuality among others, a character's Jewish faith hardly seems like that big a deal - especially in 2006.

But apparently in predominantly white Anglo-Saxon Protestant Genoa City, where the soap takes place, this is still groundbreaking news.

The show's head writer, Lynn Latham, adds "On 'The Young and the Restless' we have an African-American family, we have Latinos. We have Protestants and Catholics. Now we have a Jew."

Better late than never.

And with the fighting in the Middle East and Mel Gibson's recent anti-semitic outbursts, perhaps Y&R's latest plotline is exactly the kind of storyline audiences need right now.

17. He changed his name because some Nazi types killed his family and he was on the run from them. Daytime soaps are my guilty pleasure. I am home raising a family and I have lunch while I watch Y & R. And yes my ass is fat. So what! I had three children and I am not 18. I am also not a bigot or predjudice which I think is more important. As a side not I am not sure why this is new worthy, but I see stuff everyday that does not belong in the news I guess it is just the nature of the beast.

18. Isn't being Jewish a religion - maybe the big news is that his parents were holocaust survivors. You don't just wake up one day and discover - oh my God, I'm Catholic! Whatever he has believed to be his religion up until this point IS his religion because religion isn't inherited like nationality - it's a personal belief.

24. EGO, you have no business posting your silly ignorant comments. Get a dictionary and read it. You might learn a thing or two. In the mean time, keep your ignorance where it belongs. In your tiny brain!

26. Hey EGO, your a friggin idiot. I have been employed in the legal arena for 20 years and have been watching Y&R for 24 years. I happen to record it and watch it in the evenings. Some people work 2nd or 3rd shift and watch it too. Apparently, you don't work or you wouldn't have the attitude you do about soaps. I am neither a faggot, fat ass or unemployed. I hope whatever number you posted that readers stalk you forever but of course you prolly put someone's number that you don't like to harrass them as well. Y&R has the best story lines, if one has the history of the show, it is exciting to watch things evolve and new story lines brought to live. That takes creativity, a team of writers, and the professional actors and actresses have been on the show forever, even Mr. Diamont. My only question to the general public is what Latinos on the show was the writer referring to?
