Haley Joel Osment To Be Charged With DUI/Pot Possession

8/17/2006 4:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ broke the story that the LA County District Attorney planned to file criminal charges against Haley Joel Osment. Well, it happened Thursday afternoon.

Osment, 18, has been charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol. Osment has also been charged with driving with a .08 blood alcohol level or higher, with an enhancement of driving with a .15 or higher. Osment was also charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana while driving. Finally, Osment was charged with the infraction of driving under the age of 21 with a blood alcohol level of .05 or higher.

Osment, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "The Sixth Sense" at age 11, lost control of his 1995 Saturn on his way home and collided with a brick pillar in a suburb around 1 a.m. on July 20. No bystanders were injured in the wreck, but Osment wasn't so lucky: the actor was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was treated for a broken rib and a shoulder injury.

The collision caused the vehicle to flip over onto its roof and come to rest a short distance from the initial impact. The actor was reportedly alert and talkative following the accident, and was alone at the time of the crash.

It wasn't the drinking or the pot that threw me off, it was the fact he drives a 1995 Saturn.....
Oh.... and I will have to agree with #8, Marijuana is not a drug.

When I heard Haley Joel Osment was in car accident and alcohol was involved, I wasn’t shocked. The level of intoxication and marijuana possession did surprise me. He’s 18 and a male. In one study 53% high school seniors said they had a drink in the past month. The same study also reported.
Young adults, ages 18-20, who drank heavily (5 or more drinks on 5 or more occasions in the past month):
66 percent drove under the influence of alcohol in the past year
Add to the fact that he is a movie actor and he would be at high risk for this kind of behavior. Obviously he has to take responsibility for his actions. But on the other hand “It takes a village to make a drunk driver. It also it takes a village to prevent drunk driving ”. Someone had to sell or give him alcohol. The next few years will be very difficult for him. There are thousands of other teenagers in the same predicament. Hopefully he will find someone to help resolve or cop with the problem or problems that cause him to drink.

Instead of making jokes or ridiculing him we should take time and look at the problem of teenage drinking. I did a goggle search on teenage drinking and found this site http://www.health.org/govpubs/rpo990/. I was shocked at some of the statistics. We have a serious problem teenage drinking in this country. If we don’t address teenage drinking we will create many more Mel Gibson’s and Robin Williams. I also found another site http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/AboutNIAAA/NIAAASponsoredPrograms/underage.htm that “Annually, about 5,000 youth under age 21 die from motor vehicle crashes, other unintentional injuries, and homicides and suicides that involve underage drinking.” This is truly a national tragedy.

I remember Nancy Reagan slogan “ Just say no”. I always thought it an over simplification of the problem. As adult we should remember that teenagers can be very impulsive. They need more than slogan. Teenager and young adults need adult to help them get past this difficult time of their life. We need programs in high school’s and colleges. We also need to talk the teenagers and young adult in our life about underage drink but we also need to listen to them.

Mark, maybe you and #27 Gina can start your own organization. She can be your VP of Self Righteousness. You do make a lot of good points though. I can't help but think that if this had been someone else other than HJO it would have never made the papers, especially with him driving a '95 Saturn! Hopefully the reason he had that car is either 1) he's still too short to drive a regular-size car or 2) his parents are actually responsible and have put his earnings into a trust until he's 21!

And another child star inauspitiously falls from grace......

And for the person who went of on a tangent about marijuana not being a drug - it impairs your thinking and mobile skills - it's a drug honey. Don't come down on everybody on the board because you're not the brightest bulb in the box.

He didn't do anything different than a million other teenagers. Just because he is an actor doesn't give us the right to judge and belittle him for it. I hope he learned a lesson. Like many teens, he's doing it the hard way, but that's not our business or problem

Ok, I for one was shocked...he seemed like a good kid & he managed to stay out of the limelight instead of exploiting himself as a celebrity.

As far as marijuana not being a drug...This can be tricky. I know alot of history surrounding why it was outlawed & it's many advantages - including medically.

I also know first hand of it's disadvantages. Even if it is not physically addicting it can definitely be emotionally addictive. If you DEPEND on it to make you happy on a regular basis, then something's wrong. You just have to be responsible with it. (if that is at all possible, being that it is illegal)
