Mel Gibson Cops a Plea

Mel GibsonTMZ has learned Mel Gibson's lawyer went to the Malibu Courthouse Thursday and appeared with the prosecutor to reveal a plea deal. Gibson has agreed to three years probation, but will avoid jail time. Gibson was ordered to attend one year of AA meetings. For the first four-and-a-half months he must attend five times a week. For the remainder of the time, he must attend three times a week. Gibson must also pay $1200 in fines and penalties as well as one hundred dollars in restitution.

Gibson volunteered to do a public service announcement on the hazards of driving under the influence. He also volunteered to enter a rehab program immediately.

Under the deal, Gibson pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor of driving with a .08 blood alcohol level or higher. The misdemeanor count of driving under the influence was dismissed. The infraction of driving with an open container of alcohol was also dismissed.

Under California law, Gibson will have his driver's license restricted for 90 days.

Gibson's lawyer initially went to Division 3, but Judge Terry Adamson refused to take the plea because she is a neighbor of Gibson's. The case was moved to Division 1 where Judge Lawrence Mira took the plea. A number of celebrities have passed through Mira's courtroom, including Nick Nolte, Nicole Richie, and Kim Delaney.

Gibson was not in court for the plea.

46. Going to AA meetings with his family would be great. A whole year of AA meetings are alot I think. A fine and license taken away for 1 - 2 yrs. like everyone else would be the normal. Mel is a great family man and actor, and does alot for the community. He is human like anyone else. He puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us do. I adore Mel Gibson.

47. Hey there Lou...you are the one that is pathetic. Just as bad as all of the other prejudice people out there. As for Mel "the anti-Semite" Gibson, he should have been locked up. What a sentence he plea bargained for. Do you really thing he is going to AA 5 times a week? I won't hold my breath for his public service announcements. How could still care for this man? As for Jon-Benet Ramsay, yes that is an important news item, and I am glad that they have a suspect; but neither Mel Gibson or Jon-Benet Ramsay in their own rights are big news. Mel is an arse and Jon-Benet is dead. The bigger and more important stories in this world are perhaps the release of the 9/11 tapes. And while I am on a roll, I am tired of hearing about hurricane Katrina and New Orleans...The gulf coast is more than just New Orleans, lets worry about those people affected that are not in "below sea level" New Orleans.

48. Rob Reiner and Caroll O'conner were NOT prejudice...that is Why they made fun of how STUPID prejudice and ignorance is on their T.V. show..and they both said this in interviews!

And I am proud to be a democrate! But that has nothing to do with Mel....I think he can turn it around and do many Good things for talking against Drunk driving.

Like John Lennon said... Give peace a chance!

49. LINAD POST 25
MEL GIBSON IS NO A MENACE ON THE ROAD 3:00 AM. WE ALL GUILTY OF SPEEDING ONE TIME OR ANOTHER AND DUI IS NOT A FUNNY MATTER. BUT IF YOU LOOK INTO MEL'S DRIVING RECORD, I AM SURE THERE IS NO MAJOR ACCIDENTS OR INJURIES AS RESULT. THE MAN APOLOGIZED IN PUBLIC FOR HIS MISTAKES AND WELLING TO TREAT HIS PROBLEM. IT SHOULD BE THE END OF IT... DON'T YOU THINK?.. TMZ CAPTIONS LIKE "MEL GETS NO JAIL TIME" IS LITTLE OVER THE EDGE... I AM GLADE YOU DON'T SMOKE THAT FUNNY STUFF, ITS WORST THAN DRINKING ALCOHOL.

50. I also think that everyone should be treated equal. But money talks. If it was one of us it would of been different, so like the other person said ... hope the slam on the hand didn't hurt to bad.

51. Once a piece of s--t always a piece of s--t. Both he and his father believe the Holacost never happened. His ass should have been there and he would feel differently. Hope the slap on the wrist did not hurt too much. He deserved a whole lot more punishment. Money talks.

53. Mel Gibson got off very lightly. Under the circumstance, he should have lost his license for at least a year.

54. "Yes children, it's okay to drink and drive as long as you're famous enough."
"How famous is famous enough?"
"Well, you know that loony Mel Gibson?"

Mel's a nut, and so is everyone that likes him. I wish I was that judge.

55. Every case is different. Why do people try to make comparisons. If he was really treated unfairly one way or another and if his last dui was a marginal infraction why not do what is Judicially prudent and not have people second guess the judges who work with these things every day for decades.

56. Welcome to America... where the is rich & famous walk and the average person goes to jail or prison... if that was you or me... but we are just average folks.. not rich people nor famous.

57. I am glad Mel Gibson is being given probation if this was his first offence but I think 90 days is too short even for a first timer. Whether or not he learned his lesson I do not know but I hope he has because the next time he may kill someone. I also feel that because of who he is he got off with a slap on the wrist as so many celebrities have and will continue to do so.

58. i got a DUI and as i saw in the court for other people that had dui knowbody had there dui dismissed that way it stayed on there records for 3 years along with the probation .so yeas this gives him a clean record and DMV and keeps his insurance intact .very unfair to the rest of us that had to go through all the mess of DMV

59. PLZ people give MEL a break, famous or not he's human and showed it by getting a DUI ...we're all human so Y keep beating him up over it...I'm NOT a drinker what so ever, but when will people learn that drinking and drugs makes u do and say STUPID things...it's NOT an EXCUSE but SADLY it happens so QUIT knocking him already and give him a chance to heal from the hurtful things he's said and from his BAD drinking habits.

60. DUI plea deals should be eliminated completely. As long as there's a way out, people will ignore the law. Start punishing these idiots to the maximum extent of the law and watch occurances drop. They don't just kill themselves, they kill innocent people. Mel Gibson? BIG DEAL!!! Just another drunk with keys to a killing machine.
