Celebrity Justice
Mel Gibson Cops a Plea

Mel GibsonTMZ has learned Mel Gibson's lawyer went to the Malibu Courthouse Thursday and appeared with the prosecutor to reveal a plea deal. Gibson has agreed to three years probation, but will avoid jail time. Gibson was ordered to attend one year of AA meetings. For the first four-and-a-half months he must attend five times a week. For the remainder of the time, he must attend three times a week. Gibson must also pay $1200 in fines and penalties as well as one hundred dollars in restitution.

Gibson volunteered to do a public service announcement on the hazards of driving under the influence. He also volunteered to enter a rehab program immediately.

Under the deal, Gibson pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor of driving with a .08 blood alcohol level or higher. The misdemeanor count of driving under the influence was dismissed. The infraction of driving with an open container of alcohol was also dismissed.

Under California law, Gibson will have his driver's license restricted for 90 days.

Gibson's lawyer initially went to Division 3, but Judge Terry Adamson refused to take the plea because she is a neighbor of Gibson's. The case was moved to Division 1 where Judge Lawrence Mira took the plea. A number of celebrities have passed through Mira's courtroom, including Nick Nolte, Nicole Richie, and Kim Delaney.

Gibson was not in court for the plea.

61. Celebrity or not, Mr. Gibson received a penalty. Never forget that he also has received a penalty that only the public can dole out. To those of you who have decided to NEVER go to another one of his movies after this public airing of his poor choices (in word and deed)....he was probably drinking when you went to see The Passion of the Christ...or a lot of his other movies....yet, you don't mind going to see movies with actors who are bigots, adulterers, or all of the other taboos you find so disgusting NOW. Get a grip, people....Hollywood and actors are players....and we support their stupidity for our own entertainment. If you talk the talk....walk the walk. Probably not going to happen. They are, sorry to have to clue you in on this aspect of reality....HUMAN. Quit glorifying these people....it's a job....it's just a job that is promoted to the masses.

62. Mel Gibson's problem is not so much that he is a drunk. He has used that as an excuse to hide the animal called Anti-Semitism. He is using his celebrity status to get away with what other's would be arrested for regarding hate crimes. I can only say people like him are what hurt the world and cause the various Races and Religions not to get along. I will say that we as Americans and those of the Jewish Faith of which I belong must always keep on our hearts and minds, "Never again." Never again will we allow what happened in the Holocaust to happen. Mel Gibson does like Jewish people. That is his choice but to act in public as he did is a disgrace. Mel Gibson has no class. No amount of money he donates will ever change that he is Anti-Semitic as is his father.

Sincerely,
Manny Blanco

65. After the spectacle of that windbag sheriff Baca on TV saying that Gibson got no special treatment we find that a plea bargain was made which dropped some of the charges. Not mentioned is that fact that the charge of running away from the officer wasn't even filed. Wouldn't that be a felony if you or I did that? Not mentioned is the fact that a charge wasn't even filed for driving 87 MPH in a 45 zone. Wouldn't that be a felony if you or I did that? The whole law scene in Los Angeles County stinks to high heaven. The officer who stopped Gibson appears to have been sold out too.

67. It is way past time to put a stop to the law breakers deciding what their sentence should be. This should be done by we the people, meaning the majority and the judge should honor the wishes of the majority and impose the will of the people on the law breakers. Tom

68. I like Mel Gibson... and with this thing going on I will still like him... Yes people make mistakes but enough already. you all are ( the media) making him out to be the worst person there is... And he is not.. There are far more worst people out there... DUI's happen everyday and people do get passed it... Take it from me... My brother has been through everything Mel Gibson has been through... except being hounded by the press... and he ( my brother) has been sober for 3 years

so I think he was treated fairly

Good luck Mel Gibson... I hope everything goes well

69. I believe that when you are put on probation for an alcohol offense you aren't allowed to drink while you are probation. Either we will play favorites with yet another of our millionaires, or Mel should be locked up within a few months anyway.

70. Unbelievable... 90 DAYS RESTRICTED LICENSE ! One of my relatives had absolutely NO driving privileges for 3 months except to drive back and forth to work, and was taken away to jail for the night at his FIRST DUI.
Where is the justice ?

71. He just spoke what most Americans think about Israel. So he got a slap on the hand and the rest of yall got jail time. It goes by what your boa is. If you're .08 you had one drink. If your .24 a normal person would have passed out 6 drinks back so you must be in hard core training for AA meetings and you probably need a few days to sober up and a few years of sentence hanging over your head to get your attention. GO MEL!!

72. I'm sober since 1972 was arrested 38 times for public drunkeness. Mel should not be held aacountable for any remarks made while under the influence of alcohol as his power of reasoning is nil. Good luck "Mel" there's better days ahead. God Bless.

73. On the other hand if he were just another citizen in the good old USA, you wouldn't even know about this. This happens everyday in the good old USA without a word ever mentioned; Mel jsut happened to be a super star who didn't know how to keep his mouth under the circumstances.

Thank you

75. Who makes the laws in California ( AKA: the left coast ) ? Melvin tells the valet he's f***ed up, gets in his car, flys's past a cop over 80 mph, tries to flee from a arrest, and what? Give him a restricted drivers license!! Sh*t, I wouldn't want him driving golf balls! I agree the comments about him getting off easy, but really, I think you guys are commenting to easy. This only real punishment for him, the one that would hurt, would of been a long license suspension and probation. Fines mean nothing when your a multi-millionaire.
