Celebrity Justice
Mel Gibson Cops a Plea

Mel GibsonTMZ has learned Mel Gibson's lawyer went to the Malibu Courthouse Thursday and appeared with the prosecutor to reveal a plea deal. Gibson has agreed to three years probation, but will avoid jail time. Gibson was ordered to attend one year of AA meetings. For the first four-and-a-half months he must attend five times a week. For the remainder of the time, he must attend three times a week. Gibson must also pay $1200 in fines and penalties as well as one hundred dollars in restitution.

Gibson volunteered to do a public service announcement on the hazards of driving under the influence. He also volunteered to enter a rehab program immediately.

Under the deal, Gibson pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor of driving with a .08 blood alcohol level or higher. The misdemeanor count of driving under the influence was dismissed. The infraction of driving with an open container of alcohol was also dismissed.

Under California law, Gibson will have his driver's license restricted for 90 days.

Gibson's lawyer initially went to Division 3, but Judge Terry Adamson refused to take the plea because she is a neighbor of Gibson's. The case was moved to Division 1 where Judge Lawrence Mira took the plea. A number of celebrities have passed through Mira's courtroom, including Nick Nolte, Nicole Richie, and Kim Delaney.

Gibson was not in court for the plea.

76. Mel is a regular guy who messed up. The media insists on making a huge deal of this because the media is run by a bunch of Jews. Media get over it.

77. Shows that even showbiz types are human....He got off doing community service and rehab time. OK but I still think they should be made to carry car tags labeling them as dui offenders so anyone on the road can be aware who they are driving near

78. Why is it every time a person says something against the Jews AOL removes it.

79. MADD is the one that has these laws in effect. What overkill! Maybe if law enforcement spent time going for the crooks the courts wouldn't be so overcrowded.

Good for Mel. Too bad for the folks that don't concentrate on the important issues.

To the lady that said Mel is not a Christain, I guess she knows......................
Let ye that have not sinned cast the first stone......................

PS Studies on accidents say that DUI is the cause of 40% of accidents, the other 60% is stupdity. Too bad being stupid is not against the law!

80. I'm not satisfied. I think the plea deal should include the following additional requirements: (1) that Mel-baby complete 40 hours of community service by cleaning toilets at the Holocaust Musuem or the Museum of Tolerance and (2) that he has to write a five paragraph essay on why calling women names, like "Sugar T**ts," is justifiably offensive to women.

81. Mr. Mel Gibson ! should have gone to Jail! like everyone else that drinks and drive!!!!!!! suppose If he did kill someone, will he still get the same treatment? ALL BECAUSE HE HAS MONEY? REMEMBER IF IT WAS NOT FOR HIS FANS, HE WOULD BE POOR LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!! WAITING IN LINE AT THE UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICE--WHY DO THESE PEOPLE GET SO MUCH MONEY? ALL THEY DO IS ACT, ENTERTAIN, READ THEIR LINES!! I THINK THEY SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE EVERYONE ELSE..- THEY ARE NO BETTER THEN NONE OF US IMPREFECT HUMANS!!. THINK ABOUT IT. WHY DO THEY GET A LOT OF MONEY AND BE TREATED DIFFERENTLY? WE ARE ALL THE SAME ONE WAY OR THE OTHER!!!!!!!!!!!

82. Mel Gibson didn't get a slap on the wrist. He drove drunk. Got caught and has been raked over the coals. Let him take his punishment and get off his back. As far as the comment about Betty Ford versas AA, people in rehab are told to go to AA. I've been sober 12 years. Thank god no Dui and public opnion.

83. I agree with everyone that Mr. Gibson should not be shown any special treatment for his celebrity status, charities he supports, or being a spokesperson for the police in a commercial. He needed to address his drinking with rehab. as he's doing, attend AA meetings and get a sponsor. His loss of license for 90 days is lenient true enough, but five meetings a week in the halls is excessive. They claim success is measured by 90 meetings in 90 days, but I personally know it is up to the individual. The bottom line here is Mel shot his drunken mouth off about the wrong people. Jews are said to control everything from our government and all forms of media, to all the turmoil in the middle East. Islamics hate us for supporting Israel. We are the "Big Satan." So Mel was probably referring to this during his drunken tirade. Apology? Too little too late. They will not soon forget Mel. Eight hundred million dollars will allow Mr. Gibson to make his movies elsewhere, and stop groveling. Continued sobriety Mel! Bob

84. Well I think it was a done deal , before It got started... If this happened to us a blue collar type of person. We would have got worse and probably be in jail right now .. But If we had money then WHO CARES RIGHT.... Hell Its only a thousand dollar , He makes that much in 10 minutes of fame...What happened if he would kill someone , or but someone in a wheel chair for life . Then How would he live with that by his money... or what if he would killed his daughter or a member of his family ... but it is like talking to a wall , with teenager children... and I really think where he got wasted at should be brought in charges too.. It only fair .. But If every man in our life time would be Mel Gibson, or should say when us blue collar person gets pulled over , then we all need to act like Mel ..lol and have a fat fancy lawlyer to get us out ..it is like taking candy from a baby ...

85. The only reason that this whole thing has gotten so over blown is because he is famous , there are so many other people out there that do the same thing the only reason why it got so much coverage is because he is famous.

86. Mel did not kill anyone or even have an accident. This is his first DUI (as far as the State of California knows). My son get a DUI (first driving offence) and was fined $1,000.00 the DUI was reduced and he did not loose his license (except for the 7 months prior to his trail date). You do not have to be a millionaire to get off. You simply heave to be smart, contrite and show proper remorse. The lawyer cost a $1,000.00 as well. He paid all the fines and has not had a drink since.

87. Tucson and kat
Haven't you heard of ARD for a first time conviction?
Everyone has that opportunity for a first offense.
Hopefully this will put him on the right track.
He shouldn't be treated any better than anyone else,
but also he shouldn't be treated any worse than anyone else for a first offense.

88. All I know is I'll never look at Gibson the same way again. Just because he's so hot and sexy doesn't mean what he did should be forgotten. I am glad he got some sort of punishment. I really thought he'd get off.

89. Hey, I think that this has gone on wayyy too long. I have heard nothing about Robin Williams yet, and I never heard a thing when Billy Joel went to rehab. Politicians and judges get a free ride. Why no endless tirades against them. How about something on Sen. George Allen's remark?

90. Your question on "is Gibson's sentence" fair yes, or fair no, is not right. If one answers "yes" that meaning is clear.
But if one replies "no" that could mean the sentence was too easy or too hard. It not fair, that could mean it was too hard. so the "no" replies should not count..
