Gibson Not to Apologize to Temple In Person Yet

8/18/2006 9:07 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The rabbi who invited Mel Gibson to speak at his temple tells TMZ that Gibson has officially declined the invitation to appear before the Jewish congregation ... for now.

Rabbi David Baron says he was recently contacted by Gibson's publicist, who claimed the actor remains "deeply involved in personal work which includes rehab, therapy and counseling for alcoholism."

You may recall Baron, the Rabbi for the Temple of the Arts, asked Mel Gibson to his temple on Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement. In the letter, Baron made it clear that he "did not invite Mel Gibson to speak; I invited him to deliver a public apology."

In accordance with Gibson's situation, Baron says he has extended the offer to a later date. In addition to the invitations, the rabbi says he has also volunteered to join with a group of Jewish leaders dedicated to educate Gibson about the dangers of anti-Semitism.

UPDATE: Late Friday afternoon, Mel Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, told TMZ "Mr. Gibson hasn't declined any offers, as I haven't even discussed any offers with him. It's way too soon in his recovery , and frankly he is not interested in anything public or a photo opp."

As for Rabbi Baron's statement that Gibson rejected his request to appear at Yom Kippur services, Nierob said; "I was very clear when I spoke to the kind Rabbi yesterday that I cannot even bring any requests to my client at this time, as it is inappropriate and too early in his recovery process. He completely understood my position on this and even offered to meet with my client at a later time if and when appropriate. Also, I told him that the public nature of the request was also inappropriate."

He doesn't need to apologize. Jewish people are being ridulous. So what he bad mouth off to some people, he was drunk. Get over it. Jewish people shouldn't
have to ruin somebody life just because he said this or that. Goodness gracious.
And this holocaust and hitler, we are not responsible for all of those jewish people death. We are not Hitler or German Nazi... so stop acting like the victims all the time and stop thinking everybody supporting Hitler and Nazi and get over it.... PLEASE. And leave Gibson alone and just ignore him. And I don't know why
Hitler or Nazi wanted to kill Jewish people, I will never understand that
and NOBODY else will understand that at all... It doesn't make sense
that Hitler and German Nazi want to kill Jews just because of their belief.
Why? I don't understand that.
Jewish people in the past must have hurt Hitler or did something to make
that man gone crazy... but I don't know. I think all of this hate and getting mad
and getting apologize and revenging are all stupid.
Can we all get along and just live on Earth and be nice to each other, we
are all humans... ???

Mel Gibson has produced and starred in THE finest movies of the last fifty years. His "The Patrio" and "We Were Soldiers" are both epic, and ar used nationwide in educational circles. They are utilized in honoring our military personnel, fomr the Revolutionary War, to Vietnam, to the present. His moive, "The Passion of the Christ" is even better. Mel Gibson though, is a young Christian, who does indeed have a drinking problem. Can you identify with an addiction, a problem, that influences your life in a derogatory way? The Lord Jesus stated, "He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone." Thuds from falling rocks coudl be heard city-wide. Folks, drop your rocks and forgive. One day, you too, will give an account of YOUR life, before Jesus Christ (Revelation 20:10-15). What will YOU use then, as your list of excuses? Thought so. Now, drop the rocks and pray for Mel. This is NOT condoning anything....it is true Biblical forgiveness....something the Lord does for each of us...VERY often.

TO ALL YOU SUPERIOR JEWS. YES THAT WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE. WHEN MEL APOLOGIZED 3TIMES, THAT WASN'T ENOUGH, WHEN HE WANTED TO MEET WITH JEWISH LEADERS, YOU WERE APALLED, NOW HE WON'T GO AND YOU CALL HIM A JEW HATER. STOP YOUR CRYING ALREADY. YOU ARE THE BIGOTS, YOU HATE MEL BECAUSE HE'S A CHRISTIAN, AND TOLD THE STORY OF THE MAN YOU BETRAYED, YES BETRAYED. YOU CHOSETO SAVE A MURDERER AND NOT THE HOLY MAN WHO GAVE HIS LIFE FOR YOU. YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO SUFFERED. THE CHRISTIANS WERE THROWN TO THE LIONS FOR BELEIVING IN JESUS CHRIST. STOP ALL YOUR HATRED . GO CHECK ON YOUR GOLD, AND DIAMONDS , THAT SHOULD MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER, AND LEAVE MEL ALONE ALREADY.

Gosh the man was pulled over drunk. People dont know what they are saying when they are drunk. I don't drink but for those who do, havent any of you said stuff that you didn't mean in the when either a. you were drunk and b. you were upset at someone. I know I have just so that I can hurt someone elses feelings because they hurt mine. Yes, you all have because your human and that's what humans do. I am ashamed at all of you who are upset at Mel because of one instance where you heard, from a cop no less, about remarks he made. So where's the cop in all this matter. Mel has been around for years and there wasnt any instances where you thought the man was racist so why hate him now. You people should feel ashamed for putting such high standards on just another human being. I agree with post number 15, why arent you people trying to ruin Madonna's career, oh yeah because she has been doing this stuff for years.

Mel Gibson has apologized profusely for his lapse in judgement. Who doesn't have them. He who is free from sin cast the first stone. He has begged for forgiveness from the entire Jewish Community. They have forgiven him, and all have gone on with their lives. And so should we. What is going to take for the Public to forgive him? Get circumcized all over again and again??

That Rabbi didn't want him to come and apologize...he wanted him to come to the temple to publicly make him feel like crap and verbally "stone" him, because as a representative of the Jewish community he wanted to show how loving & forgiving they are. cough...cough...bullshit...cough...cough.

He said what he said. If this is how Jews treat people, then I can see why he would mean it. This is all starting to backfire on the Jewish community. Get over it.

AND, by the way, you would think this is the beginning of a new holocaust. There are MUCH worse things happening in the world than you giving a flying fuck about something a stupid, drunk Hollywood actor said.

There ARE actually people who give anyone a fair shot, without preconcieved notions. It is possible.

I think you are assuming everyone is like you.

I am not.

So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer.

Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan.

They were defending the United States of America as one people.

When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here.

These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are in 2006 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about.

I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statute of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.
