Celebrity Justice
Sheriff in Mel Case -- Pants on Fire

This past Friday afternoon, I landed in Los Angeles after taping my "People's Court" segments in New York. I checked my voice mail at work as we taxied to the gate and the first message was from an L.A. County Sheriff's sergeant. He wanted to talk to me about the Mel Gibson case.

I sort of knew why he was calling. The Department is obsessed with finding out who gave me the arrest report in the Gibson case. I've made it clear that I will not tell them and, besides, the law is on my side. Nevertheless, I wanted to play it out so I called him back. He was nice enough, telling me he was in charge of the "criminal investigation" into the leak and wanted to know if the rumors were true that I paid someone off for the documents. I told him I would not tell him anything about how I got the report, but I did mention that I have said on TV several times that we absolutely did not pay anyone for the documents. He thanked me, saying that I answered 80% of his questions, and that was the end of it.

Do you think the Sheriff's Department might also spend a little time figuring out why officials blatantly tried to cover-up the incident by repeatedly lying to the public the day of the arrest? Please understand, this is not about Mel Gibson. Frankly, I think given what went down, his punishment was far more severe than any other drunk driver in 2006. I can't think of anyone who was put under as much scrutiny after a DUI. This is not about Mel. It's about how arrogant the Sheriff's Department is and how officials clearly feel empowered to violate the public's trust again.

I think I've finally figured out the Sheriff's shenanigans the day of Gibson's arrest. As we reported, the Sheriff sanitized the arrest report and took out all references to Gibson's attempted escape, his anti-Semitic remarks and his bad behavior. It was done at the behest of the brass in the Sheriff's Department, and, even though he denies it, I'm told Sheriff Baca was involved in the decision. So officials told me and the rest of the media the day of the arrest that it occurred "without incident." A lie. I was told by a Sheriff's spokesperson that my information about what really went down was false. Another lie.

At the time, I felt the Sheriff, who is quite friendly with Gibson, didn't want to expose what happened on his watch, so he would arrange it so that if it came out, it would be the District Attorney's responsibility. Now I realize how dense I was -- I was totally off base. The Sheriff knew this case was going to be plea-bargained. No way would it ever go to trial. If it was plea-bargained -- as it was -- the arrest report and the incendiary video of Gibson at the station would never be admitted into evidence. It would be part of the Sheriff's investigatory file and as such protected from disclosure. In other words, Sheriff's officials clearly felt the public would never know what really happened with Mel and that they could lie and get away with it. Clearly, they didn't count on me getting the arrest report. That busted them big time. And now other lawyers have told me they've seen this happen before with other celebs.

So the Sheriff's Department is investigating why they got busted, not the corrupt process that officials sanctioned. And an "independent" commission is now investigating whether the Sheriff followed proper procedure. Well, let me tell you something about this commission. Three days after the arrest, I called the head of the commission twice -- you would think I'd get a call back if he were serious about getting to the truth. I'm still waiting, but I'm not holding my breath.

Don't get me wrong. This is not a slam on the rank-and-file in the Sheriff's Department. This is about the officials who feel they have a right to pick and choose who gets special treatment. Of course, they will do it again, and again. It's the way it works in L.A. It's just another example of "Celebrity Justice" in Tinseltown.

76. Harvey Levin is a very smart man and he is making sure Karma is getting back to Mel for his anti gay remarks in the past. It is fair game. I consider Harvey ( an acquantance of my old friend Shel Andelson) an important man and an icon for equality everywhere.

I hope in the future we have a leader such as Harvey that will cut thru the P.R. cushion given to celebrities. Thank you.

77. Frank--I did not know that we as human beings are supposed to help put Karma into motion (as you said Harvey Levin has done). Such arrogance from such a little man like you....

79. My question is: Would all the fuss be the same had Mel made those comments regarding an african-american, hispanic or asian people?

80. Being a retired Los Angeles Police Officer, I can tell you that corruption does ocassionally sneak into the inner workings of law enforcement agencies. Celebrities do get treated differently because they are not an average citizen. Many factors come into play when a famous person is taken into custody. It has to be that way. All involved know the media is going to pry into every aspect of the incident. The street cops just care about doing their job and getting it right, but once the Monday morning quarterbacking takes place, you often find things taking a different direction. It is frustrating for all involved. As "corruption" goes, this is not earth shaking stuff. Celebrities often act like spoiled, self centered children and when law enforcement gets involved, they are then sucked into a no win situation. No one wins. The Sheriff was just doing what he thought was right and it now has turned into all of this. Not a big deal in my estimation.

81. This story about Mel Gibson's antics is one of a DUI, not anti-semitism. But, given the continued rants of Jewish Hollywood monguls is not only unfounded, it's simple revenge, and total hipocrisy.

I was raised amonst Jews, lived in their neighborhoods, worked for them, went to a predominatly Jewish High School, etc. I have not ever witnessed or heard a more bigoted ethinic group, ever! Jews simply believe themselves to be better, and whenever they are called on their own bigoted BS, they fire back that you're anti-semetic, and remind how terribly victimized they've been, citing the "holocaust", and "never again"... as if they were the only people to suffer in WWII.

Balony! Mel Gibon, while he said things that were wrong, is not a monster, and afr more knowlegable of what Jew/Hollywood moguls are like, and the dirty pool they play. As for Carl Reiner opening his big yada-yada mouth, demanding Mel admit that "Passion of the Christ" was anti-semetic -- that's more pro-jew balony too.

The world witnessed what the zionists jews are about when they attacked Lebanon, illegally, in a pre-planned and contrived manner -- and commiting atrocities, wholesale -- and for what? Because two soldiers sitting on occupied Lebanese soil were CAPTURED? But, their arrogance cost them dearly too, didn't it? Despite their tech-advanced military, including, tanks, artillary, air force fighter and bombers, and a Navy, they met an enemy that stalemated them. n An enemy with only rocets, and fighters with gutsd and a dterminaton that comes ony fomr being the true victims tired of being pushed around...

I even know Jews who cannot stand the criminal ways of the Israeli zionists bigots, and I'm sure Carl Reiner would never have the gutspa to admit the same.

82. Hey Harvey - How long ago did the Mel thing happen? And when exactly are you going to let this thing go? What I really hope now is that Mel takes a deep breath, lights a fire under his den of high paid powerful lawyers and sues the living sh*t out of you for your continued harrassment of him and for the possibility of permanently damaging his career from all this slander perpetrated by you.

I am Mel's fan. I am also human and have said things I'd like to take back. But I was never punished in the manner you feel necessary in punishing this man - for whtever reasons you may have. OK, ok - so you can't unring a bell. But why do you feel the necessity for Mel to do a continued public penence? Or maybe you'd like to parade him down Hollywood Blvd. hauling a wooden cross on his back.

83. WOW Denny - You take my breath away. I feel the same, have grown up the same (possibly in the same Jewish neighborhoods - who knows), witnessed many the same things you describe. I have one thing to say regarding your message: It was Rob Reiner (Carl's son) the one who played meathead in 'All in the Family' years ago. I read his article and then one or two from another idiot who plays dogs on film, Rob Schneider (who claims to be a half Jew). I recently wrote to Newsweek about this guy and plan on writing more re: Rob Reiner.

You know it was ok years ago when Rob Reiner was acting on a show next to the most bigotted character on television at the time and that made Reiner's fame and fortune. If he is so concerned about anti-semitism, why then did he go on such a show? One word - hypocracy.

Thanks for the message.

84. This is not about Mel, this is not about Mel, one more time Harvey. And Mr. Spielburg if Mel were to "donate $1,000,000 to the State of Isreal " would you then accept his apology?

86. unFAME.com RESPONSE TO MR.SPIELBERG

(Prelude to unFAME's comment) ..."when intoxicated one sees
things turned upside down"***Those considering especially debating words of one intoxicated lean towards the insane and a more serious issue, being that tomorrow the one intoxicated will be sane and sober minded._Mr. Spielberg_ your strong public support--via a (suspect intent) letter--for corp. Hollywood's 'celeb biz' dismantling arts, and monopoly, campaign that includes rag gossip slandering the movie-stars as coveted wealthy tycoon lushes (which you especially know is absurd) is more unforgivable. Awesome. Thanks for letting the people know which side of the fence your on in Hollywood. Respectfully, your films over the last decade have certainly depicted your sell-out, man. Sir.***(RESPONSE)***

Corporate Hollywood, a machine motivated by power and greed, once again strikes out to fully monopolize America's arts. By-products of their takeover include dismantling the arts and oppressing actors via the celebrity industry. Arts are vital both as the primary guide for improvements in the human condition and as the most accurate reflection of the current state and direction of our civilization.*

Hollywood is the figurehead for arts in this country. In their campaign, the corporate machine undermines the importance of the art coming out of Hollywood by framing it as a silly clown and defrocking it's representatives. These same representatives (actors) - and art itself - symbolize freedom of speech and freedom from oppression. This filters down into society: freedom in the arts leads to freedom for the people. Therefore as the rightful overseers of our arts, the people of the U.S. are bound by civil duty to recapture control of this most precious and essential institution.*

It's clear that the corporate machine of Hollywood, in conjunction with those in power throughout the United States, utilizes the arts to influence, manipulate and ultimately dominate society for their purposes. Perhaps when they first started out their "eyes were big blue question marks" but it is evident now that those eyes are "big green dollar marks." And it's nothing new for the powerful to seek to control the people via the arts.*

Iconic of American arts, Hollywood actors are bearing the brunt of the intent, efforts and oppressive business practices of this machine. More and more actors are showing indicators of distress as the takeover of the arts continues. A catalyst to examine this, Gillian Anderson has earned the title 'Joan of Hollywood' for her courage to endure unfair labor practices, a virtual loss of young motherhood, and her subsequently being black balled.*

Critical to the success of their takeover, the corporate machine promotes a pointed lack of empathy for artists in Hollywood. They paint a facade via the media that actors are overindulged tycoons instead of their true position as oppressed pawns in golden cages. As the people of the U.S. take responsibility in managing the arts, it is crucial that the most visible representatives of our arts (Hollywood actors) are supported and celebrated.

88. Hey Harvey,

I enjoy seeing you on People's Court. I like the combination of egregiously bad puns and sound legal advice. (Get it in writing!)

This isn't the only time Sheriff Leroy Baca has demonstrated his less-than-stellar celebrity slobbering. Last year, he wrote a letter to the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors in support of a proposed Narconon facility in Leona Valley, a rural community northeast of the city.

Narconon's drug education program was kicked out of California public schools in 2005, following a review by the state. It was determined that the program was unscientific, inaccurate and misleading. Hawaii and Boston followed suit.

Yet Narconon applies these same theories in practice, with a hefty dose of Scientology indoctrination, targeting vulnerable people trying to recover from drug and alcohol programs. It has been scientifically proven that the long sauna sessions and massive doses of niacin can cause permanent health problems.

Yet Baca continues to pull his forelock and bow to Scientologist celebrities, as well as kissing up to this destructive cult.

Scientologists try to portray this cult as a socially beneficial organization, while at the same time trampling on the rights of its perceived enemies.
has a great deal of information on Scientology's front group, Narconon, which incidentally has no relationship with any 12 step program. The name is just a cunning ploy deliberately meant to deceive public officials and citizens.

Baca is either intentionally ignorant, or corrupt. There is no other excuse for his behavior.

89. Why should we even believe Harvey got the report. When he says what Mel allegedly did during the arrest he says it like he was there. He doesn't once say "alledged" in the TV interviews I have seen. He lists the things like he witnessed them. What a crock. He is a lawyer, so this is not just some mistake on his part. He is probably just another lying jew that is milking this for all the publicity it is worth.
