Inside Story -- Why Redstone Railed on Cruise

Sumner Redstone, Tom Cruise

Hollywood is buzzing about Tom Cruise and the end of his relationship with Paramount Pictures -- and even more so about the verbal butt-kicking that Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone gave Cruise on his way out the door. So what ticked Redstone off so much?

"Sumner used to wear the same pair of movie-theater-usher pants..."

TMZ spoke to eight Viacom insiders, spread diversely across the media giant's numerous divisions, including the television networks and business affairs. The consensus was a bit surprising -- that Redstone is as nutty as Cruise, and the combo was bound to blow.

One well-placed source said that Cruise, who demanded a huge percentage of gross profits off the top of all his movies, was simply too rich for Redstone's cheap blood. The source mused that "Sumner used to wear the same pair of movie-theater-usher pants -- you know, the ones with the stripe down the side -- day after day with an unmatched suit jacket."

Several other sources attributed Redstone's anger to his native personality. "He has this whole old-fashioned, New England thing and doesn't suffer fools, especially creative ones, lightly," says one source who has worked with Redstone. "It doesn't take much to get him angry and he's probably been keeping this bottled up." Once he got wind that Cruise was trying to raise funds, says the source, Redstone decided to lash out.

Still another source says that Redstone was trying to make an example out of Cruise. Specifically, you don't "screw" with The Man. Cruise and his producing partner, Paula Wagner, say they were the ones to shut down negotiations with Paramount, after a chance of a deal seemed futile.

Virtually everyone we spoke with agreed -- Cruise's departure is a good thing for morale at Viacom. As one source said, as they were suffering "budget-cutting indignities," Cruise was living high on the hog. Now Cruise has been sent out to pasture, or, if you will Green Acres.

301. Tom...you better listen up now!!...It's not up to you or Scientology to decide what's right for me or Brooke or anyone else.... we'll do just fine without you. Wish i could say that i respect your opinion, but, frankly i don't. Perhaps, in the future, you'll do better if you keep your opinions to yourself. You do what's right for your family, and we'll do what we think helps us. You can jump on as many couches as you want, if that makes you happy..and i am happy for you.
You very seriously crossed the line with the post partum depression thing. You are NOT an expert in psychiatry or to my knowledge, do you have a degree in psychiatry. So let's leave the expertise to the experts.
Religion has no place in Hollywood...so let us keep it where it belongs...at home!!
You do your thing and i'll do my thing and if by chance meet each other...it's beautiful. Until then....tom....i don't hate you, but puleeeese shaddddup about other peoples business

302. 212 Dawn...you must be on some serious drugs if you don't think that Tom opined that certain women shoudn't take certain drugs. You and Tom need a vacation and should stop telling people what they should do with their lives. Whatever your beliefs are, we don't have to listen to them....as far as know, neither one of you have MD after their names...so have a coke and a smile and shut the f*ck up

303. I think Katie Holmes made such a wrong move to leave Chris Klein. Tom was already an idiot for letting a beautiful woman like Nicole Kidman go. He is wrong in so many ways expressing his religion. How dare he make comments about Brooke Shields ordeal with post-pardon depression. That poor little girl Suri and her mother. If i were them i would leave as soon as possible before he completely looses his mind...whatever is left of it

304. What I think is weird is that Tom couldn't conceive with his first wife, supposedly the reason for their split. He didn't conceive with his second wife.....they adopted. For some time there were rumors the boy has no seed. How did Katie become with child? Also, his religion supports bi-sexuality, and so much smoke around the gay rumors. Why do people believe his relationship is real? It appears that past behavior is the indicator for future behavior, you never heard him speak about his relationships so pubicly before........ Kinda seems like a Michael Jackson, Lisa Marie diversion tactic to me......Anyone agree?

305. Getting Katie prego? in the words of Jay Leno, 'have you heard of the word invitro?' I'm not a fan of Mr. Maypother (sp?); it has always seemed quite evident to me that he (Tom) has spent much of his life trying to appear so macho, so butch, so much larger than life when the reality is that he's really quite a small (no pun) man--I use the term 'man' only to specify his gender, I really don't believe 'man' can really be applicable to him in any other manner. I suppose what bothers me most, though, is the fact that unlike nearly every other male 'superstar', he has spent so much time and energy trying to convince the world that he's straight; I can't think of many other male celebrities who have had to defend their sexuality more than our boy, Thomas; and as the saying goes, where there's smoke there's usually fire.

306. What is happening to America? How can the media and some citizens be so evil attacking a human being for having expressed himself freely. Where is the Constitution? And the Human Rights? And you call yourself the land of freedom? You should be ashamed. Around the globe we like Tom Cruise and we love the way he declared his love for Katie at Oprah and we admire him for doing something to warn people about the dangers of psychiatric drugs. He could just have sat back and enjoyed his fortune but he is concerned about one of the greatest catastrophies in history and tried to do something about it risking it all. Psychs are drugging millions of american children at schools for made up reasons. This is huge!!! Here in Europe we can't believe you are so blind. It's unbelieveable. You keep attacking the man when he is just a good man!!!
After his exposure of the psych drug fraud last year, the sales of psych anti depressants fell a 20% and they -the psychs- have not forgiven him. They have been running this evil black propaganda campaign for more than a year now. They can sure control the media and fool many americans but they won't fool the whole planet. No matter what they do against him, we have eyes and we like Tom. He is a fighter and he will continue being extremely successful.

307. Rock on Paramount. Let's slowly purge our world of the psychotic ramblings of Tom Cruise and all his couch jumping, alien cult worshiping traits!

308. Redstone is a f*cking mutant lizard, there is no animal or human for that matter that looks anywhere near what this freak does. His face is the most misshapen floppy turd-like cow dung pile of sh*t to grease the tabloids..

309. i think this sucks, i won't disagree that he has been acting unusual (ok, even totally off his rocker at times), but love does strange things. No one can deny that he has done some sensational work, and in my eyes he will be truely missed.

310. I think he is a closet case. Maybe someday he will come out of the closet.
