Inside Story -- Why Redstone Railed on Cruise

Sumner Redstone, Tom Cruise

Hollywood is buzzing about Tom Cruise and the end of his relationship with Paramount Pictures -- and even more so about the verbal butt-kicking that Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone gave Cruise on his way out the door. So what ticked Redstone off so much?

"Sumner used to wear the same pair of movie-theater-usher pants..."

TMZ spoke to eight Viacom insiders, spread diversely across the media giant's numerous divisions, including the television networks and business affairs. The consensus was a bit surprising -- that Redstone is as nutty as Cruise, and the combo was bound to blow.

One well-placed source said that Cruise, who demanded a huge percentage of gross profits off the top of all his movies, was simply too rich for Redstone's cheap blood. The source mused that "Sumner used to wear the same pair of movie-theater-usher pants -- you know, the ones with the stripe down the side -- day after day with an unmatched suit jacket."

Several other sources attributed Redstone's anger to his native personality. "He has this whole old-fashioned, New England thing and doesn't suffer fools, especially creative ones, lightly," says one source who has worked with Redstone. "It doesn't take much to get him angry and he's probably been keeping this bottled up." Once he got wind that Cruise was trying to raise funds, says the source, Redstone decided to lash out.

Still another source says that Redstone was trying to make an example out of Cruise. Specifically, you don't "screw" with The Man. Cruise and his producing partner, Paula Wagner, say they were the ones to shut down negotiations with Paramount, after a chance of a deal seemed futile.

Virtually everyone we spoke with agreed -- Cruise's departure is a good thing for morale at Viacom. As one source said, as they were suffering "budget-cutting indignities," Cruise was living high on the hog. Now Cruise has been sent out to pasture, or, if you will Green Acres.

46. Redstone is nothing but a cheap old coot. Next he'll probably raid the 401k's - if they still exist. Maybe Sumner hasn't gotten the message, but it's prefectly legal to express opinions. Gee I wonder where he stands on Church patron Mel Gibson...starting with his DUI and then moving to hidden feelings that make my skin crawl. Besides having the ego that comes with stardom - what's wrong with Cruise treating his fans as friends without having to watch every word. He is who he is. Gay? Bi? I don't know and don't particularly care. He's a pleasure to watch on the screen and I'm sure he'll line up another studio before you know it.

47. Sorry Gary, his beliefs are enmeshed with his acting. He had pitched Scientology tents while he was filming to try to recruit more Stepford-wife-like groupies, he coerced potential interviewers by insisting they visit a Scientology site and read its propaganda prior to granting an interview, and purportedly threatened to not help promote MI:3 if the infamous Southpark episode wasn't pulled. That, my friend, is mixing up the boundaries between work and private beliefs....

And, it is quite scary that he handpicked an impressionable (and very willing) young, less-than-star material, but hopeful woman to mold into his view of a perfect mother of his child. Their backgrounds sound so disparate - choosing someone who seemingly came from a loving, supportive, structured background, while his was sadly chaotic and dysfunctional. She was quite social and engaging while he was (and is) odd and private and using his "religion" to justify his oddness and it seems to be affecting his wife and child.... Scary stuff...

48. You all seem to forget the good things that Tom has done in public...Saving people off of freeways, boats etc. I think he has a good heart & believes fleely as we are all allowed to do in this country.

Jumping on a couch because he loves someone is the ultimate. How many women can say that about their men?

I would like to see Suri though!

49. #20 - You must not have your own brain to think the way every one of these 'sheep' think. Since you want to generalize then let me - you're probably a bisexual, nolife, fat, tattoo'd, pierced, single mother trying to figure out how she is going to get a nice guy now. Typical internet woman.

As for #27 - Get real. It's not like he's president. He's an actor. He doesnt represent the company what so ever. Not anymore than you do, or anyone else. He's essentially a contractor for a company since he's bound by contract - doesnt mean he represents them. Either way, he still makes them a ton of money and deserves his cut from his popularity. Isnt there some deviation of what other "actors" make vs what he makes from a given movie? Wouldnt he be entitled to more of that if that' s the case? In other words, if he brings in on average 50mil more than most other top actors on average, why wouldnt he be entitled to some of that? They can try to find someone who brings in this much at the Box Office, and suffer when they don't. Are you that retarted to think it's Paramounts client base? I mean really, do you all go see a movie because it's a PARAMOUNT movie? I dont know anyone who does. This is Tom's client base, and thank you for making my point exactly. As for his client base - it's his - he can do so as he see's fit. If he chooses to open his mouth and it impacts his career, it's his choice. Chances are I will be more apt to boycott a Paramount picture now, whereas I never really payed attention. Even still, regardless of where he goes - he will continually make over 100-200mil first opening weekend at the Box Office for his movies. This is still far better than most actors films.

51. #40...hey, and just how do you know the profile of the "typical internet woman"....ARE you one, or have you been "the victim" of one???

52. I won't knock his religion, to each his own....

I WILL say I think Tom has NEVER had ANY right to bash Brooke Shields or ANYONE else for depression meds, especially if their female, because he doesn't know the first thing about giving birth..
I also don't think it was "Toms idea FIRST" to sever ties with the company, I think they did indeed dump him because his head has gotten waaaaay too big for his short ass, and he's saving himself anymore embarrassment..
Tom, you have enough money to last FOUR of my lifetimes, why don't you for ONCE concentrate on taking care of your wife and child and just chill for awhile.

54. It's the summer of Sumner.

55. #39 - Mary, very wise words and well spoken, and yes Tom can suffer if he chooses to impact his own career by crossing those boundaries. Paramount simply cut their own nose off to spite thier face. I still believe, it's Tom's fans - he can damage it if he chooses too. Not like he will really need more money. As for his wife and their shared beliefs - I think people are just nosey. Mind your own businesses.

56. GOOD FOR YOU SUMNER. AFTER SEEING THIS IDIOT TOM'S RANTINGS ON THE TODAY SHOW WITH MATT LAUER, COMMENTS ABOUT POST PARTEM DEPRESSSION, AND COUCH JUMPING, AND GETTING A LOVELY NAIEVE GIRL PREGNANT, I AM GLAD HE WAS FIRED. I FOR ONE WILL NOT SPEND ANY MONEY SEEING ANY MOVIES HE IS IN.
MAYBE WITH THIS EXTRA TIME ON HIS HANDS HE CAN GO AROUND BRINGING MORE LITTLE INNOCENT BASTARDS INTO THE WORLD. GREAT ROLE MODEL YOU SHORT, BIG NOSED, SELF CENTERED LITTLE NAPOLEON.
P.S...PLEASE PARDON THE MISSPELLINGS. RTB

57. This is nothing new.
Cruise has started his own film company.
So the big wigs had to come out and bash him.

58. I never believed Tom Cruise was a good actor. What he had was luck and a smile. After jumping on couches and making such a ass out of himself, I was
embarassed for him even though he was not embarassed. I can not believe Oprah was not shocked by this. I do believe what goes around comes around and he is getting his due. He is getting to cocky anyway. How he got to where he is, I will never know. That goes for a lot of other actors and actresses who are making a lot of money for what? Tom is getting what he deserves. I do not feel sorry for him. We do make our destiny and he made his. But, do not feel sorry for him, he is not poor by any means.

59. What the heck is Creative Suicide? Does anyone know?

60. I was never particularly a Cruise fan to begin with. I don't like pretty boys, nor do I like short guys. If he had to depend on movie goers like me he wouldn't have so much money. Since his tiraids with Matt Lauer and Brooke Shields I want to barf on him. I will never go and see another movie with him in it even as a supporting player, producer, director, etc. It's time for him to disappear. Also, who cares about his kid.
