Inside Story -- Why Redstone Railed on Cruise

Sumner Redstone, Tom Cruise

Hollywood is buzzing about Tom Cruise and the end of his relationship with Paramount Pictures -- and even more so about the verbal butt-kicking that Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone gave Cruise on his way out the door. So what ticked Redstone off so much?

"Sumner used to wear the same pair of movie-theater-usher pants..."

TMZ spoke to eight Viacom insiders, spread diversely across the media giant's numerous divisions, including the television networks and business affairs. The consensus was a bit surprising -- that Redstone is as nutty as Cruise, and the combo was bound to blow.

One well-placed source said that Cruise, who demanded a huge percentage of gross profits off the top of all his movies, was simply too rich for Redstone's cheap blood. The source mused that "Sumner used to wear the same pair of movie-theater-usher pants -- you know, the ones with the stripe down the side -- day after day with an unmatched suit jacket."

Several other sources attributed Redstone's anger to his native personality. "He has this whole old-fashioned, New England thing and doesn't suffer fools, especially creative ones, lightly," says one source who has worked with Redstone. "It doesn't take much to get him angry and he's probably been keeping this bottled up." Once he got wind that Cruise was trying to raise funds, says the source, Redstone decided to lash out.

Still another source says that Redstone was trying to make an example out of Cruise. Specifically, you don't "screw" with The Man. Cruise and his producing partner, Paula Wagner, say they were the ones to shut down negotiations with Paramount, after a chance of a deal seemed futile.

Virtually everyone we spoke with agreed -- Cruise's departure is a good thing for morale at Viacom. As one source said, as they were suffering "budget-cutting indignities," Cruise was living high on the hog. Now Cruise has been sent out to pasture, or, if you will Green Acres.

76. You don't know what a person goes thru if you are not walking in there shoes. People are always so quick to judge others when they are on the outside looking in. Taking care of our lives should be enough without trying to butt into others lives. We really don't know these people only what the media betrays. If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all, that is what i was taught.

77. Dear Tom,
Call ma...I can hook you up with a great doctor that can give you some antidepressants to help get you over this.
Love Brooke

78. Good for you, Sumner. I think Tom is a pain in the "axx." I think he is gay, a hypocrite, and I will not pay to see any of his movies in the future. I applaud your decision. Tom needs to "come clean."

79. THE BREAKUP WAS ABOUT REDSTONE NOT BEING ABLE TO CONTROL THE CONTRACT. HE KNOWS TOM IS A MONEY MAKER AND HE IS NOT GOING TO GET IN ON THE TAKE ANYMORE. HE ATTACKED TOM THROUGH THE MEDIA. IN THE PAST IT HAS BEEN DECLARED THROUGH THE MEDIA THAT BLAH,BLAH,BLAH AND WE WISH WHOMEVER THE BEST BUT WE ARE GOING IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION, BLAH,BLAH,BLAH. REDSTONE WAS FURIOUS AT THE LOSS OF CONTROL IN THE SITUATION AND WENT FOR THE JUGLAR (COMMON KNOWLEDGE ,THAT TOM DEFENDS HIS HONOR, INTEGERITY,AND CHARACTER). IT'S THE LOSS OF THE BIG BUCKS THAT IS CAUSING REDSONE TO ACT OUT IN PUBLIC.TOM WILL CONTINUE TO BEAT OUOT THE MONEY MAKER MOVIES AND RESTONE WILL HAVE TO ANSWER TO THE TOP DOGS ABOUT HIS OWN ANTICS.

80. Come on people...its like you are just thinking with what the media says and not thinking for yourselves.

If Katie did not want to be with him she would not be...but it appears that she wanted him since she was a kid and asked Penelope to introduce her to Tom.

He makes great movies and is entitled to an opinion.

Need I remind you that by speaking out he had exposed the crimes of the drug companies. Now they are not to happy about that....Makes you wonder if that might be the true source of the attacks.

If you want to blindly believe that all this pill popping is good for society then you should look at the studies and the links between kids going into their schools killing their classmates and psyc drugs.

I say thurmbs up to Tom for not blindly believing the drug companies and media and looking for truth.

The motto for Scientology by the way is "Think for yourself" Doesnt sound like brainwashing does it?

81. Sumner needs to retire and get a life...Tom is still the man and hes absolutely correct about the drugs, they are grossly overprescribed by idiot doctors. Tom is a great actor and good guy. Dont be haters.

82. Tom is a slug and Katie is too stupid to show him the door. The day he became a know-it-all about babies, depression and religion, I stopped going to his movies and refused to buy a publication with his phoney, smiling mug plastered on the front. This guy is not worth pity. He got what he deserved.

83. Tom with his religion-Scientology is very dangerous to everyone! Rich people are blind most of the time! They try to escape from inner pain and as a result - JUST LOOK AT TOM CRUISE! He is SICK! He is dangerous with his cult to himself and people around him!
Scientology - DENGEROUS CULT! Rich and stupid people invest your money in something better!

84.
Well you know, I would love to take medical advice from Tom...if he were a doctor... But since he hasnt even graduated from college, and only reads biased scientology propaganta...I dont think that the American public gives a crap what he thinks. Has he even ever played a doctor in the movies?????

85. Good for you Sumner. I think Tom Cruise is a gay hypocrite, and I cannot stand him. I refuse to see his movies, so this does impact your bottom line. He needs to "come clean" with the public. You did the right thing!!!

86. This is for Tom Cruise and all the nut cases in Hollywood (which means all of you associated in media industries...)

It's time we knock down all of Hollywood and it's cast of liberal whiner know it alls. Here are some qualities that you people represent which have desecrated the very fabric of not on the USA but this sick influence has carried overseas: You are the save the trees, save the whales, save the dogs, allow kids to divorce their families, doggie psychologists, drug snorting, gerbil parties, affirmative action supporting, ACLU contributors, save a dolphin, but kill a human child…… whacked out bunch of losers.

I can barely watch movies anymore and I have zero tolerance for the trash they put on TV to the masses of morons that don’t know any better. Now, you say free speech but I can assure you that you only support free speech when its some perverted topic about people having sex with farm animals and that this email because is bold and blunt to the point will be deleted.

I want the entire industry to crash and burn and maybe we can get back to something a bit more sensible and have people that are approachable and level headed.

Tom and all the Hollywood buddies deserve to crash and burn and take the entire media industry with it to skid row.... :)

Now have a nice day and back to your waiter jobs to earn a real living..

87. First of all, What does LOL mean?

Now, Yes Tom is a good actor and has made some very good movies. And yes he gets credit for his talent. Everyone in this country has the right to any belief they choose, and the right to voice it. Everyone here also has the right to NOT LISTEN. If you don't like him or what he states he/she stands for, don't patronize them.

AND, if it weren't for our bloodlust curiosity of these stars, they wouldn't be pulling this stuff. It's our own fault for revering them more than they should be.

As for Katie, she was old enough to date him. She should be old enough to take responsibilty for ALL the actions. Brainwashing doesn't happen in an instant.

88. I see Cruise as an actor. There have been better, yes but also worse. I agree that he needs to keep his comments and religious beliefs to himself. I still believe he is one of the best actors of our time. I will continue to enjoy his movies. His personal life is no concern of mine, nor should it be to anyone. Maybe he will cool his jets now hopefully. I think he would be missed as a great actor.

89. hope he'll be off for ever.

90. I liked and still like Tom. Yes, perhaps a little saggi foot/hoof in mouth gets him from time to time but it must be hard trying to live under a magnifying glass, even if you make your living doing it. There are moments in all our lives where that really grand stupid remark has escaped our lips, or that geeky stupid thing we did happens in front of friends, bosses, coworkers or clients but at least it wasn't simultaneously broadcast to every species from here to mars and back. I think everyone, rich and poor have it hard in this world and perhaps it's the whole symptom of a world in wretched lack of compassion and love, and denial of whats true and worthy.
Peace and love to us all.
