Inside Story -- Why Redstone Railed on Cruise

Sumner Redstone, Tom Cruise

Hollywood is buzzing about Tom Cruise and the end of his relationship with Paramount Pictures -- and even more so about the verbal butt-kicking that Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone gave Cruise on his way out the door. So what ticked Redstone off so much?

"Sumner used to wear the same pair of movie-theater-usher pants..."

TMZ spoke to eight Viacom insiders, spread diversely across the media giant's numerous divisions, including the television networks and business affairs. The consensus was a bit surprising -- that Redstone is as nutty as Cruise, and the combo was bound to blow.

One well-placed source said that Cruise, who demanded a huge percentage of gross profits off the top of all his movies, was simply too rich for Redstone's cheap blood. The source mused that "Sumner used to wear the same pair of movie-theater-usher pants -- you know, the ones with the stripe down the side -- day after day with an unmatched suit jacket."

Several other sources attributed Redstone's anger to his native personality. "He has this whole old-fashioned, New England thing and doesn't suffer fools, especially creative ones, lightly," says one source who has worked with Redstone. "It doesn't take much to get him angry and he's probably been keeping this bottled up." Once he got wind that Cruise was trying to raise funds, says the source, Redstone decided to lash out.

Still another source says that Redstone was trying to make an example out of Cruise. Specifically, you don't "screw" with The Man. Cruise and his producing partner, Paula Wagner, say they were the ones to shut down negotiations with Paramount, after a chance of a deal seemed futile.

Virtually everyone we spoke with agreed -- Cruise's departure is a good thing for morale at Viacom. As one source said, as they were suffering "budget-cutting indignities," Cruise was living high on the hog. Now Cruise has been sent out to pasture, or, if you will Green Acres.

92. Tom Cruise has been way over-rated for too many years, he is bossy, short and only a fair actor so so long tom good riddance. Johnny Depp's the man!

94. As for impregnating Katie Holmes, that is the biggest "scam" in Hollywood since Rock Hudson got married....Gees.

95. While I personally think Tom is a little strange, I also recognize that little in the media is the way it seems and this is more about business and dollars than anything about Cruise personally. We really know very little about Cruise other than he seems to show up at car and boat accidents and offers assistance, he jumps on a couch and proclaims his love (weird ..yes, but worthy of condemnation ... no) and he is a scientologist (so's Travolta and others ..not worthy of attack, just disagreement) and he spoke out strongly against psychiatrists and drugs (worthy of disagreement and signs of over-reaction, but hey, maybe he was mistreated by one or has had a bad personal experience.). Point being we can disagree with him, and we can dislike him, but we have no idea of his relationship with Katie so let's stop with that brainwashing melodrama and we have no idea what really happened with Paramount. From all news articles it appears that 1) Summer Redstone is an even bigger freak (again just supposition), 2) Paramount didn't dump Cruise - negotiations reached a financial impasse and 3) this wasn't about Cruise's behavior as if it was, why were they negotiating at all. Summer's press release is just a smoke screen, defense mechanism for him to justify to his shareholders why he was unable to sign Cruise who is still the most bankable star on the planet. And just so we are clear, I am not a big Cruise fan, think he is a lousy actor, but I know he is a bankable moneymaker.

97. Actors get paid too much anyway for PLAYING MAKE BELIEVE. 20 million for a damn movie. If all the hollywood actors would pool their money they could probably solve our energy problem and many diseases on this planet. All I need is one million and I could live the rest of my life on just the interest.

99. Bottom line is that he is a draw at theaters, his pictures make big bucks.

No matter where he goes, and I'm sure he will go somewhere, he will bring in the bing.

My question is, does he still have his secret home at Pensacola Beach Florida, where he meets the young boys , is it okay with the Scientology religion to be a closet gay guy?

I would love to give Nicole Kiddman a lie detector test, ot better yet Tom himself

100. All of the big studio bosses are based back on the East Coast.
Actors have to behave, and Tom Cruise did not, he wanted more money and percentage cuts out of every movie he made.
The actors are merely puppets, well paid ones, but the real money puppets who decide their fates, ironically, are closely watching their investments over at the west coast.
This is a learning lesson for Tom Cruise. Goes to show, everyone has a BOSS.

101. Um, WAS Tom Cruise in "The Princess Bride"?

I really have to quote my father here: "If that guy smiles one more time, I'm gonna puke." I've always found him unappealing, and I'm not sorry to see him get fired. Being famous does not make your opinion matter more, and frankly, if any Christian celebrity attempted to proselytize so openly, the public would have none of it. Bravo, South Park, for not showing sacred, mysterious Scientology any more respect than you've shown Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hindu or anything else. We're all supposed to laugh at Kyle being called a stupid Jew, but we mustn't poke fun at Scientologists. Let's let Jesus have a talk show, let's portray God as a strange furry creature, but let's not air Scientology's actual beliefs about aliens coming to rescue us. Whatever. Chef really did join a gay club that scrambled his brains.

And yeah, Katie is an adult--give her some credit.

102. Go look up Scientology on Wikipedia you'll be shocked. I definitely was. I can't believe that these powerful people believe such nonsense. Good for Nicole in getting out. Let's hope Katie is smart enough to do the same. But read it, you and your friends will have something to talk about.

103. Tom Cruise will be scooped up faster then Paris Hilton spreads her legs........well, maybe not THAT fast.....but this is the most bankable star in the history of movies. its like blowing up a bank you own with $2 billion in the vault!!!

104. Mister Cruise is a gentleman. A gentleman should be able to do what he wants to do. It is only right.
