"Survivor's" New Cast Most Ethnically Diverse Yet

CBS today announced the 20 new castaways for "Survivor: Cook Islands," the 13th edition of the popular reality series. If this cast doesn't look like any before it, it's for good reason. In fact, the ethnic mix of this year's cast is no accident.
Surivor: Cook Islands
For the first time, the show's castaways will initially be organized into four tribes divided along ethnic lines (African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic and White), before merging in a later episode. The casts had been previously divided up into different groups for various reasons (age and sex, for example) but this is the first time ethnicity has come into play.

"Survivor: Cook Islands" premieres Thursday September 14 at 8PM ET/PT on CBS.

31. Come on people, get real. It's only a television show and a damn good one at that (as far as reality shows go). The four groups will remain as that only for a short while. It will be very interesting to see how like ethnic groups work together and play together.

32. I would also say it might be more interesting if they have cast members who do not fit neatly into one race designation (most people I know do not) and see how that would playout. I assume like prison. Maybe there would be some black white supremecists, etc.

33. I have been a survivor fan. But racially dividing teams is beyond insensitivity, It is iunbelievably stupid! I can guarantee that I will not watch.

34. I will be watching Survivor again this year. I only missed one of the last 12. The Ethnic groups will be divided at first but when the merge happens, they'll be together and have to work and live together. I am hoping this will all be a good thing.

35. I am pleased to see that at least you got it right - this is an ethnic/race matchup - keeping in mind that hispanic is an ethnic group not a race - I am annoyed that we dumb down america to the point that ethnicity is soooo commonly used as a race. Check you census info which clarifies that hispanics can be of any race and is an ethnic group -

36. I think it's a great way to play the game! Go for it!!! This show will be the best ever!!! If people can't take it maybe they should look at whats bothering them about the game, after all it's just a game!!Wake up America!! Nobody's going to get killed on this show.

37. It seems in this day and age, all ethnic groups want to do is be in their own little groups, instead of becoming Americans in the fullest sense, so why not continue it on a reality show??? All blacks talk about is "the nation" and they aren't referring to America, and other ethnic groups also have to have their other country/continent added before American (Asian American), so this show is only following real life. Maybe it will get people thinking about unity and that being an American means just that, not some little faction out only for itself within America.

38. This isn't about anyone being racist...it's a TV show for god's sake! Get over it people!

39. Reality Shows have little ethnic diversity. Hey, that's aok.

But...

To say you're seeking "diversity" and then using "diveristy" as your "twist." That's messed up. Survivor is not a social experiment. It's a show. A show designed to make money for the producers, the Network, and the Advertisers.

Playing with race in the context of understanding? Boo.

Give me Howard Stern...he calls it like it is...he's brash and outrageous and admits that he plays on sex and race for RATINGS.

CBS and Survivor trying to hide behind the cloak of showing a glimpse of how people segregate themselves? (See Burnett's quotes on-line.) Despicable.

I've watched Survivor religiously. No more. I'm changing the channel.

40. I was shocked to see this was really happening on a major network. After reading several of the responses promoting the show stating "this is no big deal"
makes me wonder how many of these comments are posted by caucassians. We have a long way to go and this is not the right step.

42. It was just a matter of time before this happened. Reality tv is growing stale and they need to boos the ratings.
I predict it is the next wave of :shock tv" where copy cats stations try and "one up" the other network to see how far they push the envelope. It is similar to all the sex and violence we now see on prime time. Why is this any different?
Public executions here we come.

43. This will be the highest rated Survivors season EVER!

I'm really SICK of diversity. People don't want to merge anymore. Fine. I don't either. I'll be voting for MY people!

And, let's get RID of affirmative action too. Another outdated HIPPIE idea.

44. This isn't racist. Its an experiment in ethnic diversity. Is the olympics racist? Its another way to change things up. Lets not let racism be a factor.

45. Racist? Perhaps. But that's not the point.

A complete lack of sensitivity to enthnicity and understanding? YES.

A NETWORK is playing with race to incite and entice an audience AND they are pretending that it's a positive hook, a "social experiment." At least call it like it is...a ratings ploy.

Think about it...how many Asians do you see on reality tv programs? Few. Survivor made a point to recruit Asians for this new season. For the point of? Playing ON RACE for RATINGS? Doesn't that bother anyone?

In the history of slavery, whether the slaves were Black, White, Asian, or...whatever...games were played at the expense of being different. CBS is embracing it.

Have you seen their promo tonight? A woman saying "We must represent!" No matter her ethinicity...isn't there something divisive about it all?

Spread the word. Change the channel and boycott Survivor's Advertisers.
