"Survivor's" New Cast Most Ethnically Diverse Yet

CBS today announced the 20 new castaways for "Survivor: Cook Islands," the 13th edition of the popular reality series. If this cast doesn't look like any before it, it's for good reason. In fact, the ethnic mix of this year's cast is no accident.

For the first time, the show's castaways will initially be organized into four tribes divided along ethnic lines (African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic and White), before merging in a later episode. The casts had been previously divided up into different groups for various reasons (age and sex, for example) but this is the first time ethnicity has come into play.

"Survivor: Cook Islands" premieres Thursday September 14 at 8PM ET/PT on CBS.

46. To quote Jeff Probst...

"I think at first glance when you just hear the idea, it could sound like a stunt," Survivor host Jeff Probst said on a CBS morning news show. "But that's not what we're doing here."

"We've always had a low number of minority applicants ... apply to the show. So we set out and said, 'Let's turn this criticism into creative for the show,"' he said, adding that it fit Survivor's mission of being a "social experiment."

Are you kidding me? Has he seen the promos?

47. Well, I don't think the show is racist, just trying to stri up controversy. Of course the producers will pick people that fit stereotupes. TV is meant to entertain not educate. In fact many people will only tune in to see others fitting their sterotypes.

"See Jim Bob I told you all those (insert race here) were like that."

Its as stupid as the concept on FX called "Black and White". I only had to see three seconds to know how horrible it would be.

So far as the swimming, thats on of those sterotypes that will never die..so save yourself the break.

Its like when I tell folks I, a Black female, has a dog:
"
"You have a dog!!!"

"Yes, I do. I love him."

"Wait, wait you mean you are not afraid of the dog???!!"

"Ummm no,he's pretty bad and spoiled but since I have NO KIDS, its cool"

"Wai, wait you have a DOG!!? I thought black er...I mean some people are afraid of dogs"

"Not me, sorry. I love pets."

"Wow"
Then if I really want to mess them up I just say that I walk my dog while listening to NIN.

Thats enough to make folks go into cardiac arrest.

49. If the white people win there will be an outcry that the show was rigged.

51. I am asian. I think this would be an interesting one. I laughed when I saw the odds. Who cares? They picked 4 out of each ethnic and no doubt there are more whites to choose from. I'd say whites have more chances of winning.... unless CBS picked 4 retarded whites by mistake, then that's another story.

52. I hear congress is now getting involved in this whole racial thing. We don't pay our congress people to tell us what we can watch on tv. Not their job! This is just too much. This should not be such a big deal to people. So what if the players are divided into groups by race? They have already been divided between men and women or young and old. I see no difference now. I do not know why everyone is so fast to play the race card. It is all people to me and it is entertainment. I have friends of all races. They will all end up on the one team halfway through it anyway. The people in congress have the black caucus, the hispanic caucus, etc. That is a division of groups by race right there. I don't think they want to be included as a group with all the congressman in it. They would lose some of their power. So I say stay out of it. What's good for the goose is good for the gandor. I have always watched Survivor and will continue to do so. I say bravo to the producers. I am glad you have the guts to throw the politically correct stuff out the window. Something like that should not be ruling our life. If you don't want to watch Survivor, the tv has an off switch!

53. Having a show, where you racially divide people is plain stupid, im sure CBS wil lose tons of ratings, hopefully that is and i think stephanie and jt are probably brother and sister from Alabama or something, they sure sound like hicks...probably look like inbreds too!

54. I am troubled that we are dividing the teams up by race, but even more troubled that once again First Nations people are left out of the equation. I have seen this done too many times. I am often told that there are too few of us to include, too few to count, that our tribes are too diverse, etc.
ARGGHHHH!!!

56. Why is it that the Black and White groups have three women, and the others only have two women in their group? IS THAT EQUAL?
