Mel Phones Jews -- "I'm Really Sorry"

Mel GibsonMel Gibson has decided to make good with the Jewish community, one Jew at a time.

TMZ has learned that Gibson has been calling entertainment industry honchos with whom he's worked in the past and apologizing for his anti-Semitic rant the morning of his DUI arrest.

Two of the people he called, who wish to remain anonymous, say Gibson told them that he wanted them to know that he was really sorry and he was working on his "problem." Gibson also said that he hoped he would be able to work with them again.

"...he wanted them to know that he was really sorry and he was working on his 'problem.'"

The two people who gave the debrief on Gibson's conversation to TMZ say that they were less than moved by the actor's apology. One said he was civil to Gibson but was unconvinced that Gibson has changed his stripes.

Gibson has declined offers to speak before larger groups. His publicist says the actor is consumed with his recovery at the moment and cannot deal with other matters until he gets his life under control.

It is unclear why Gibson began making the calls, however his rep has told TMZ that his client was in a recovery program, which includes a 12-step program to sobriety. Step #9 is making amends. If Gibson is on Step #9, he clearly is on the fast track.

16. Mel had too much to drink and did something stupid. The fact that he is Mel Gibson put him on the news. Most of us have done or said things we didn't mean when we were drinking. I say, give him a break. All is forgiven Mel.

17. Sounds like it. All these people backing Mel. Bet they would be mad if he used the "N" word.

18. #17 Just to let you know that as a black woman, if he had said the "n" word and then turned around and said he was sorry I would accept it.

19. DAMNED IF YOU DO AND DAMNED IF YOU DON'T. THE MEDIA SLAMMED MEL FOR ONLY REACHING OUT 3 TIMES IN APOLOGY AND NOW THAT HE IS THINKING HARD AND TRUE ABOUT HIS ACTIONS, WHILE IN RECOVERY, HE IS DEEMED NOT SINCERE. HE BLURTED SOME MEAN THINGS WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE. HE IS HUMAN. HE SAID HE IS SORRY. WHY MAKE YOURSELF SUPERIOR BY REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE HIM NOW THAT HE IS MEDIA FODDER. HE IS GOING TO COME BACK BIGGER AND GREATER THEN EVER. THINK ABOUT YOUR PROFITS IN THE FUTURE. HIS TALENT AND ABILITY IS STILL IN TACT. HIS MELTDOWN WAS UNFORTUNATE BUT WHEN HE COMES BACK A MORE SENSITIVE AND ENLIGHTEN PERSON , WHAT A SIGHT TO BEHOLD. THERE IS GOING TO BE A TIME WHEN YOU WILL BE CALLING HIM FOR BUSINESS. HE IUS NOT A EVIL,VILE PERSON. JUST HUMAN.

20. Kathryn-I find it really hard to believe that YOU have NEVER said something that you regret. We have ALL said something about someone and if you say you haven't you are a LIAR. Take a good look at yourself before you judge others.

21. These entertainment industry honchos need to just accept Mel's apology and moved on. What kind of "honchos" are they if they think their industry is full of perfect people. Be the mature person and just accept it and move on. Life is too short.

23. I truly believe Mel is sorry for his remarks.

I have a behavioral addiction to shopping and we go through the 12 steps, and, believe me, it is a struggle every day for the rest of my life. I have done
Step #9 to make amends to all the people who I lied to about debt, etc., and believe me, the program works, but you have to work it the rest of your life.

25. Well of course you would forgive him #17 ........you can't be mad when black people call each other that ALL the time , if Mel did say that he would be considered a racist.....i live 2 miles away from Detroit and have african american friends and I DO NOT use that word out of respect....and i asked them how come it is so offensive if i was to say it and you guys can sit here and N this and N that......its a double standard.....4 of them said it doesn't bother them 1 one them said its in the context of how you use it and the other ones say black people tend to automatically assume you would be a racist.....being my friend they no better then that ...they also said they don't use it with a er at the end its a A at the end of the N word....i hate that word ....i hate hate period

27. There is a difference between truly being sorry and just being sorry you got caught. Which it sounds like mel is just sorry he was caught.

28. 12-Step program veterans will tell you that words (especially apologies) from an addict are meaningless. Besides, "amend" means to change, not to apologize. Mel had better start behaving his way into good thinking instead of trying to think (and apologize) his way into good behavior. He needs to find a sponsor, now, who won't co-sign his self-important movie star crap and who'll tell him to hang up the phone and to start seriously working Step 1.

30. I'm not so worried about his remarks as I am about the fact that he was driving while drunk. Death is very permanent and he would not have been able to get away with just an "I'm sorry". That’s my 2 cents.
